    Notes: Abstract Background: A combination of digital palpation and ultrasonography plays an important role in locating insulinomas intraoperatively. Laparoscopic resection of insulinomas has been described recently, but experience in locating insulinomas during laparoscopy is lacking. Methods: From January 1998 to January 1999, three patients with pancreatic insulinomas underwent laparoscopy and laparoscopic ultrasonography aimed at intraoperative localization and potential resection. The role of laparoscopy and laparoscopic ultrasonography in locating insulinomas is evaluated. Results: Preoperative localization studies were routinely performed, and two patients had an occult tumor before laparoscopy. None of the tumors was detected by laparoscopic examination, but laparoscopic ultrasonography identified solitary tumors located at the body and tail of the pancreas. Conversion to laparotomy was performed in one patient as a planned procedure. One patient underwent laparoscopic enucleation, whereas the other had a laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy. Conclusions: Laparoscopic ultrasonography seems to be sensitive in locating insulinomas at the body and tail of the pancreas. It optimizes and facilitates resection of insulinomas through a minimally invasive approach.

    Notes: Using the coupled-cluster method we investigate the ground-state properties of an easy-plane spin-one antiferromagnet which has a critical point at zero temperature. This spin system represents a nontrivial system with the single-ion anisotropy. Single-ion anisotropies have a fundamental influence on the behavior of a magnetic system, and prevail in almost all physical systems with spin greater than one half. Because of the complexities caused by the single-ion anisotropy term, the mean-field approximation is commonly used in calculations of the thermodynamic quantities. However, in the mean-field approximation both quantum and spin fluctuation correlations have been neglected. Here we apply the coupled-cluster method to obtain the ground-state energy, staggered magnetization and critical point for both two and three dimensional lattices. In the coupled-cluster method the correlations of the quantum and spin fluctuations have been systematically included.

    Notes: In this paper we have investigated the ground state of an easy-plane spin-one ferromagnet: H = D∑i(Sxi)2 −(J/2)∑(i, j)Si⋅Sj −h∑iSzi, using the coupled-cluster method. The mean-field approximation is commonly used in calculations of thermodynamic quantities for such systems because of the complexities caused by the single-ion anisotropy term. However, in the mean-field approximation both quantum and spin fluctuation correlations are neglected. Above the critical point, the zero-temperature series expansion method has been used to obtain estimates of the critical crystal field potential (Dc) and critical exponent of the susceptibility. Using the coupled-cluster method we obtained the ground-state energy, magnetization and critical point for both two- and three-dimensional lattices.

    Notes: Magnetoacoustic emission (MAE), Barkhausen emission (BE), and hysteresis loop measurements have been made on steel specimens heat treated to produce ferritic/pearlitic structures with various volume fractions of ferrite Vα. It was found that in the low-field region the BE activity decreases whereas the MAE signal increases with Vα. Increasing Vα also results in a decrease in the initial peak height of MAE profiles and the formation of outer peaks in BE profiles. It was observed by Lorentz microscopy that in ferrite non-180° domain wall motion occurs readily in the low-field region, while in pearlite significant 180° domain wall motion takes place only when a reversed field was applied. These results can account for the variations in the MAE and BE profiles with Vα. The sensitivity of the MAE and BE profiles to Vα enables both techniques to be exploited for monitoring the ferrite content of steel components. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The magnetic properties and microstructures of a series of as-quenched and heat-treated inert gas atomized (IGA) rare-earth rich (Nd,Dy)–Fe–B particles have been investigated. Heat treatment was found to substantially improve magnetic properties, with effects most pronounced in samples with higher Dy content and higher total rare earth (RE) content. The as-quenched particles consisted of an underquenched dendritic-like structure with the majority phase RE2Fe14B, and a fine network of RE-rich material between the grains. The heat-treated particles showed a change in microstructure which correlated with magnetic property changes. Particles which showed little change in magnetic properties showed no obvious change in microstructure. Particles which showed large changes in magnetic properties showed a large change in microstructure: most of the fine network of RE-rich interdendritic material disappeared, leaving behind only a few small isolated regions. This would seem to indicate that the predominant mechanism determining coercivity in these IGA RE-rich (Nd,Dy)–Fe–B powers is nucleation of reverse domains, rather than domain wall pinning at nonmagnetic intergranular material. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Measurements of hysteresis and Barkhausen effect (BE) have been made on 0.1 wt % C Fe–C alloys subjected to strain-controlled fatigue at various strain amplitudes. A relationship between the fatigue lifetime and strain amplitude was observed. The hysteresis properties of the samples cycled at different strain amplitudes were found to vary systematically with expended fatigue life. These properties showed significant changes in the initial and final stages of fatigue, while between these stages they remained stabilized. In the stable stage the remanence was found to decrease, whereas the coercivity increased with increasing strain amplitude. Variations in BE signal during fatigue were found to be closely related to the microstructural changes observed on the sample surface. These results are interpreted in the context of the changes in microstructure caused by fatigue damage, and the effects of the formation and propagation of fatigue cracks on the field distribution and domain structure in the vicinity of the cracks. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A micromagnetic model has been developed for investigating the effect of stress on the magnetic properties of thin films. This effect has been implemented by including the magnetoelastic energy term into the Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert equation. Magnetization curves of a nickel film were calculated under both tensile and compressive stresses of various magnitudes applied along the field direction. The modeling results show that coercivity increased with increasing compressive stress while remanence decreased with increasing tensile stress. The results are in agreement with the experimental data in the literature and can be interpreted in terms of the effects of the applied stress on the irreversible rotation of magnetic moments during magnetization reversal under an applied field. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A study of the effects of microstructural changes on domain structure and magnetic properties as a result of fatigue has been made on Fe–C alloys subjected to either cold work, stress-relief annealing, or heat treatment that produced a ferritic/pearlitic structure. The magnetic properties varied with stress cycling depending on the initial condition of the samples. Variations in coercivity in the initial stage of fatigue were closely related to the changes in dislocation structure. In the intermediate stage of fatigue the observed refinement of domain structures was related to the development of dislocation cell structures and formation of slip bands. In the final stage of fatigue the remanence and maximum permeability decreased dramatically, and this rate of decrease was dependent on the crack propagation rate. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
