    Description / Table of Contents: This book on Marine Radioactivity sets out to cover most of the aspects of marine radioactivity which have been the focus of scientific study in recent decades. The authors and their reviews divide into topic areas which have defined the field over its history. They cover the suite of natural radioisotopes which have been present in the oceans since their formation and quantitatively dominate the inventory of radioactivity in the oceans. Also addressed are the suite of artificial radionuclides introduced to the oceans as a consequence of the use of the atom for development of nuclear energy, nuclear weapons and various applications of nuclear science. The major source of these continues to derive from the global fallout of atmospheric tests of nuclear weapons in the 1950s and 1960s but also includes both planned and accidental releases of radioactivity from both civilian and military nuclear technology. The other division of the major study direction depends on whether the objective is to use the radionuclides as powerful tools to study oceanic processes, to describe and understand the ocean distribution of the various natural or artificial radionuclides or to assess the different radionuclides' impact on and pathways to man or marine organisms. The oceans cover 70% of the Earth's surface and thus contains a corresponding large share of the Earth's radioactivity. Marine Radioactivity covers topics of recent scientific study in this young field. It examines both natural radioactivity (radioactivity naturally present in oceans since their formation) and artificial radioactivity (radioactivity introduced by man and use of atomic and nuclear energy) with regard to possible effects on the global environment.

    Notes: Abstract The analyses of lake sediments from the northeastern U.S. provide depositional histories of137Cs and239+240Pu from both global fallout and fallout from the Nevada Test Site (NTS) detonations in the 1950's. These results provide an independent verification and extension of the temporal trend of the240Pu/239Pu atom ration of global fallout to earlier times. This data supports the findings of other studies of fallout in the atmospheric and marine environment.

    Notes: Abstract Radiochemical procedures are discussed for the isolation and determination of a suite of radionuclides in samples from the Black Sea following their input from the Chernobyl reactor accident. The samples analyzed include discrete water samples and both suspended and dissolved phases collected by in-situ chemisorption techniques. The radiochemical scheme permits the separation and analysis of134Cs,137Cs,90Sr,144Ce,147Pm,106Ru,239Pu,240Pu, and in some instances242Cm,238Pu, and241Am. The detection techniques employed include various instrumental gamma spectrometric methods, low-level beta counting, alpha spectrometry, and mass spectrometry. The method's developments are described and data are presented on some representative samples from the Black Sea. The sensitivity of the analysis for the various nuclides and sample types is summarized and questions of radiochemical interferences are addressed.

    Notes: Abstract An international laboratory intercomparison of actinides in human tissues was organized by the United States Transuranium Registry and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Five laboratories from the United States, United Kingdom, and Japan participated in the intercomparison. The laboratories were requested to analyze Standard Reference Materials 4351 (Human Lung) and 4352 (Human Liver) for239Pu and240Pu concentration. Approximately equivalent measurement capabilities were generally found among the participants. The results of this intercomparison were statistically comparable to those used for the original certification of the SRM's and were combined for a re-evaluation of the certified values. The combined data sets provide a better characterization of the inhomogeneity of these reference materials and result in a better basis for certification.

    Notes: Abstract A sensitive technique for the measurement of dissolved and particulate actinide concentrations and water column distributions is described. Pu, Am, and Th isotopes are collected using large-volume, wire-mounted electrical pumping systems. Particles were removed by filtration, and actinides by absorption on MnO2-coated filters. The very large volumes processed (up to 4000 liters) result in very sensitive and precise concentration measurements after analyses of the samples by standard radiochemical and alpha spectrometric techniques.
