Notes: We present the study of the giant magnetoresistance effect in ferromagnetically ordered thin film and bulk based on the Hund's rule coupling between the mobile d electron and the core spin of Mn ions. It has been shown that the resistivity is proportional to the spin–spin correlation functions, a maximum resistivity appears near the critical point in absence of magnetic field and an applied field drives the resistivity peak to higher temperature and reduces the peak value, which is in agreement with the experiments. The giant magnetoresistance effect in thin film is attributed to the spin-correlation-dependent scattering and the low-dimensional character. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The mechanism of carriers accompanied by spin-wave cloud and Jahn–Teller phononic cloud, called composite polaron, is proposed to explain the unusual transport and thermodynamic properties in perovskite manganites over all the temperature and magnetic field range. It is shown that the energy bandwidth of composite polarons is strongly renormalized with the increases of temperature and magnetic field, the bandwidth narrows with elevated temperature, while it broadens with increasing magnetic field. The resistivity of composite polarons increases with elevated temperature strongly, reaches a maximum near the Curie temperature TC, and decreases with the increase of magnetic field. The specific heat of composite polarons also exhibits a maximum near TC. These results agree with experiments in a broad temperature and magnetic field range, suggesting that composite polarons contribute to the unusual properties in manganites. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present theoretical studies on the spin diffusion dynamics of the double exchange model including Jahn–Teller distortion for manganites. It is shown that due to the trapping of composite polarons in the magnetic transition regime, the spin diffusion dynamics becomes important. The spin diffusion coefficient obtained by our theory agrees well with experimental data. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In mammals it has been thought that the circadian clock localizes only in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus. Recent studies have revealed that certain brain regions and peripheral tissues may also have intrinsic circadian clocks. However, the roles played by ‘peripheral circadian clocks’ have not been fully elucidated. In this study, we investigated their function using mouse pineal glands, and found that expression of the arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (Aa-Nat, EC 2.3.1.87, the rate-limiting enzyme of melatonin synthesis) gene after adrenergic receptor stimulation depended on the time of day even in vitro (gating). Phase-dependent Aa-Nat responses were observed in both melatonin-proficient and melatonin-deficient mouse pineal glands. Phosphodiesterases are unlikely to suppress Aa-Nat induction because a phosphodiesterase inhibitor itself had no effect on the mRNA levels. Puromycin was ineffective in inducing Aa-Nat mRNA levels in either the presence or absence of isoproterenol, suggesting that newly synthesized proteins may not be necessary to gate the Aa-Nat responses. We also discovered circadian dependence of the expression of Period1-luminescence in Period1–luciferase transgenic mouse pineal glands: circadian clocks may be functional in culture. Aa-Nat mRNA levels showed no significant circadian rhythms in the absence of isoproterenol, thus suggesting that Aa-Nat mRNA levels are induced by adrenergic mechanisms, not by a pineal circadian clock. Our results suggest that the pineal circadian clock may determine timing when Aa-Nat gene expression can respond to inputs from the master circadian clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, e.g. adrenergic stimulation.

Notes: We demonstrate coherent optical control of phonon oscillations using a femtosecond control pulse. The experiments were performed in InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells. Coherent acoustic phonon oscillations was initiated with an UV femtosecond pulse. The subsequent manipulation, including magnitude and phase, of the coherent acoustic phonon oscillations was achieved using another UV femtosecond pulse by controlling the pulse time delay and intensity. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Lateral diffusion behavior of two-dimensional carrier gas in InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells was investigated using optical transient transmission measurements. A large ambipolar diffusion coefficient was observed, which was attributed to the enhancement by a strong piezoelectric field. This large ambipolar diffusion coefficient was found to increase with increased well width with a value on the order of 3000 cm2/s for a 62 Å well-width sample. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Ultrafast carrier dynamics of bandtail states in an unintentionally doped gallium nitride sample was investigated using femtosecond transient transmission measurements. The transient responses of shallow bandtail states resemble those of above band gap extended states. The transient responses of the deep bandtail states are, on the other hand dominated by carrier transfer into the lower energy states through phonon assisted tunneling suggesting that the deep bandtail states are localized states. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have observed coherent acoustic-phonon oscillation in InGaN/GaN multiple-quantum wells. With femtosecond pulse excitation, photogenerated carriers screen out the strained-induced piezoelectric field and initiate the coherent acoustic-phonon oscillation. The resulted modulation of the piezoelectric field will then cause large optical property oscillation through the quantum-confined Stark effect. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Two-photon absorption coefficients of GaN for below band gap ultraviolet wavelength and midgap infrared wavelength were measured by using femtosecond pulsewidth autocorrelation and Z-scan techniques. Large two-photon absorption coefficients were obtained. Taking advantage of the large two-photon absorption, we have demonstrated two-photon confocal imaging of a GaN thin film. Direct correlation was found between the yellow luminescence and suppression of bandedge luminescence. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Femtosecond transient transmission pump–probe technique was used to investigate exciton dynamics in a nominally undoped GaN thin film at room temperature. An exciton ionization time of 100–250 femtoseconds was observed by the time-resolved pump–probe measurement. A comparison experiment with pre-excited free carriers also confirmed the observation of the exciton ionization process in bulk GaN. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
