Description: The relationship between planktonic and benthic foraminiferal stable-isotope values and oceanographic conditions and factors controlling isotopic variations are discussed on the basis of oxygen and carbon isotopic analyses of 192 modern surface and Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) samples from the South China Sea (SCS). The harmonic variation of benthic delta18O in surface sediments with water depth and temperature implies that the temperature is the main factor influencing benthic delta18O variations. Planktonic delta18O fluctuates with sea surface temperature (SST) and salinity (SSS). The N-S temperature gradient results in planktonic delta18O decreasing from the northeast to the south. Cool, saline waters driven by the winter monsoon are interpreted to have been responsible for the high delta18O values in the northeast SCS. The East Asian monsoons not only bring nutrients into the South China Sea and maintain high nutrient concentration levels at the southwestern and northeastern ends, which cause depleted delta13C both in planktonic (surface) and benthic (bottom) samples but also reduce planktonic/benthic delta18O differences. The distribution of delta18O and delta13C in the surface and LGM samples are strikingly similar, indicating that the impact of SST and SSS has been maintained, and nutrient inputs, mainly from the northeastern and southwestern ends, have been controlled by monsoons since the LGM. Comparisons of the modern and LGM delta18O indicate a difference of about 3.6 °C in bottom-water temperature and a large surface-to-bottom temperature gradient during the LGM as compared to today.

Description: Since the 1970s, Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) and Deep Sea Drilling Program (DSDP) studies have documented high accumulations of biogenic silica and carbonate in the late Miocene-early Pliocene Indian-Pacific Ocean. This high biogenic productivity event, or the "Biogenic Bloom Event," has been dated from 9.0 to 3.5 Ma (Leinen, 1979, doi:10.1130/0016-7606(1979)90〈801:BSAITC〉2.0.CO;2; Theyer et al., 1985, doi:10.2973/dsdp.proc.85.133.1985; Farrell et al., 1995, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.138.143.1995; Dickens and Owen, 1996, doi:10.1016/0377-8398(95)00054-2, 1999, doi:10.1016/S0025-3227(99)00057-2; Dickens and Barron, 1997, doi:10.1016/S0377-8398(97)00003-0; Berger et al., 1993, doi:10.2973/odp.proc.sr.130.051.1993). It is unknown, however, whether the Biogenic Bloom Event existed in the South China Sea (SCS). High-quality Cenozoic sediment cores taken from the SCS during ODP Leg 184 provide an opportunity to investigate this question. The purpose of this study is to trace and illustrate the change in biogenic productivity in the southern SCS since the late Miocene and the Biogenic Bloom Event in terms of the content and accumulation rate of opal and carbonate at Site 1143.

Description: Article Auxin signalling requires the degradation of Aux/IAA transcriptional repressors which is mediated by their interaction with F-box proteins. Jing et al. show that in rice, OsIAA11 interaction with the F-box protein TIR1 is enhanced by cyclophilin-dependent cis / trans isomerisation of the repressor. Description: Salient object perception is the process of sensing the salient information from the spatio-temporal visual scenes, which is a rapid pre-attention mechanism for the target location in a visual smart sensor. In recent decades, many successful models of visual saliency perception have been proposed to simulate the pre-attention behavior. Since most of the methods usually need some ad hoc parameters or high-cost preprocessing, they are difficult to rapidly detect salient object or be implemented by computing parallelism in a smart sensor. In this paper, we propose a novel spatio-temporal saliency perception method based on spatio-temporal hypercomplex spectral contrast (HSC). Firstly, the proposed HSC algorithm represent the features in the HSV (hue, saturation and value) color space and features of motion by a hypercomplex number. Secondly, the spatio-temporal salient objects are efficiently detected by hypercomplex Fourier spectral contrast in parallel. Finally, our saliency perception model also incorporates with the non-uniform sampling, which is a common phenomenon of human vision that directs visual attention to the logarithmic center of the image/video in natural scenes. The experimental results on the public saliency perception datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach compared to eleven state-of-the-art approaches. In addition, we extend the proposed model to moving object extraction in dynamic scenes, and the proposed algorithm is superior to the traditional algorithms.

Description: Article REGγ is a component of ubiquitin-independent 20S proteasome that targets many regulatory proteins for degradation. Here the authors show that REGγ is induced in DSS colitis and promotes degradation of IκBɛ, and that REGγ-deficient mice have less NFκB activation and are more resistant to the disease.
