Abstract Basing on the structural rheology of rocks and of rock bodies such as developed by the author the importance of time for the set-up and for the enunciative value of tectonic experiments is discussed. A short view of the historical development elucidates the differences in the fixing of aims and in the physical base of diverse tectonic experiments. The discussion deals, in particular, with the problem in which way, if one applies the fundamental laws of model mechanics (dimensional analysis), certain general rheological principles of material interrelationship for rock bodies in the sector to be envisaged for representation in the shape of a model exert an influence on the choice of model matter. The general rheological behavior of rock bodies lends itself to description by means of a dilatedBurgers body with a fluidal strain limit or with an ultimate stress limit, respectively. There exist model matters with a corresponding principle of material interrelationship; the pertaining numerical characteristics of matter are indicated. As a conclusion for carrying out experiments of tectonic models the author underscores the fact that tectonic experiments carried out on the strength of rheological principles are not able to give unquestionablyclear answers to many questions, it is true, but, on the other hand, that they supply a valuable help in checking up on and confirming certain tectonic hypotheses (quasi models).
