    Notes: —The enzyme dopamine-β-hydroxylase (EC 1.14.17.1) which converts dopamine to noradrenaline was found to be present in substantial amounts in sheep brain hypothalamus and caudate nucleus and was located to the synaptic vesicle fractions in these two brain regions by subcellular fractionation. This dopamine-β-hydroxylase was associated with paniculate matter in these two brain regions since it was resistant to solubilization with butan-1-ol and 0.1% Triton X-100. As highly significant levels of dopamine-β-hydroxylase were present in the caudate nucleus, factors other than a simple lack of this enzyme must operate to maintain the low levels of noradrenaline and high levels of dopamine in the caudate nucleus. Purified adrenal dopamine-β-hydroxylase was substantially inhibited by two factors prepared from sheep brain hypothalamus and caudate nucleus. These were found to be cupric ions and a sulphydryl inhibitor. High levels of the sulphydryl inhibitor of dopamine-β-hydroxylase were found in synaptosomal fractions from sheep brain hypothalamus and caudate nucleus and the levels were comparable in both regions. Upon subfractionation of a synaptosome-containing fraction from the hypothalamus, the inhibitor was located predominantly in the soluble fraction, although there were significant levels in the synaptic vesicle fraction. Therefore, the sulphydryl inhibitor must be considered as a possible regulator of dopamine-β-hydroxylase activity.Free cupric ion concentrations as low as 2·5 μM were found to inhibit purified adrenal dopamine-β-hydroxylase in vitro and the concentration of copper in the soluble tissue component of hypothalamus and caudate nucleus was well above this minimal copper concentration. The percentage content of soluble copper in the caudate nucleus was significantly higher than in the hypothalamus. The importance of the soluble to particulate-bound ratio of copper in brain was shown in studies of the developing rat brain. A rapid increase in the level of copper in brain was found in the first 4 weeks but the level was constant by 2 months of age. The percentage of soluble copper, however, was maximal soon after birth and had declined to a constant figure by 2 months of age. A scheme for the regulation of dopamine-β-hydroxylase activity involving these factors is proposed.

    Notes: In Severn Trent Water, rapid-gravity filtration is used as a tertiary treatment process on a number of large sewage-treatment works, and is likely to find further use in meeting more stringent discharge quality limits in the future. Design maximum hydraulic loadings and average suspended-solids loadings are identified, and average hydraulic and solids loadings for 1989–91 are presented. Established filters are hydraulically underloaded, but on average suspended-solids loadings they are mostly overloaded due to relatively poor quality influents. High mean solids and BOD removals are achieved. Reduced medium relative density has been found to vary with the degree of fouling and causes over-expansion of the bed and medium loss. A correlation has been demonstrated between relative density and percentage dry matter, which could be used to assess the degree of medium fouling.

    Notes: Abstract —Whereas the coast of Peru south of 10°S is historically accustomed to tsunamigenic earthquakes, the subduction zone north of 10°S has been relatively quiet. On 21 February 1996 at 21:51 GMT (07:51 local time) a large, tsunamigenic earthquake (Harvard estimate M w = 7.5) struck at 9.6°S, 79.6°W, approximately 130 km off the northern coast of Peru, north of the intersection of the Mendaña fracture zone with the Peru–Chile trench. The likely mechanism inferred from seismic data is a low-angle thrust consistent with subduction of the Nazca Plate beneath the South American plate, with relatively slow rupture characteristics. Approximately one hour after the main shock, a damaging tsunami reached the Peruvian coast, resulting in twelve deaths. We report survey measurements, from 7.7°S to 11°S, on maximum runup (2–5m, between 8 and 10°S), maximum inundation distances, which exceeded 500 m, and tsunami sediment deposition patterns. Observations and numerical simulations show that the hydrodynamic characteristics of this event resemble those of the 1992 Nicaragua tsunami. Differences in climate, vegetation and population make these two tsunamis seem more different than they were. This 1996 Chimbote event was the first large (M w 〉7) subduction-zone (interplate) earthquake between about 8 and 10°S, in Peru, since the 17th century, and bears resemblance to the 1960 (M w 7.6) event at 6.8°S. Together these two events are apparently the only large subduction-zone earthquakes in northern Peru since 1619 (est. latitude 8°S, est. M w 7.8); these two tsunamis also each produced more fatalities than any other tsunami in Peru since the 18th century. We concur with Pelayo and Wiens (1990, 1992) that this subduction zone, in northern Peru, resembles others where the subduction zone is only weakly coupled, and convergence is largely aseismic. Subduction-zone earthquakes, when they occur, are slow, commonly shallow, and originate far from shore (near the tip of the wedge). Thus they are weakly felt, and the ensuing tsunamis are unanticipated by local populations. Although perhaps a borderline case, the Chimbote tsunami clearly is another wake-up example of a "tsunami earthquake."
