Notes: TlBa2Ca2Cu3O9±δ high Tc thin films were prepared on MgO 〈100〉 surfaces by a combination of laser ablation from a stoichiometric Ba2Ca2Cu3Ox target and the thermal evaporation of thallium oxide. X-ray diffraction measurements showed that the films consisted of predominantly c axis oriented TlBa2Ca2Cu3O9±δ, and scanning electron microscopy revealed that the surfaces had a flat, platelike morphology. The ac inductive measurements indicated that the onset of superconductivity occurred at 117 K with a transition width (10%–90%) of ∼3 K. Zero resistivity was reached at 120 K. The critical current density was ∼3×104 A/cm2 at 110 K.

Notes: Abstract. The objective of this study was to compare the image quality, sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy of an open low-field MR system (0.2 T) with a standard high-field MR system (1.5 T) after arthrography of the shoulder. Thirty-eight patients either with suspected chronic instability (n = 12) or rotator cuff abnormalities (n = 26) were examined. Intra-articular injection of diluted Gd-DTPA was followed in randomized order either first by imaging on an open 0.2-T system or on a 1.5-T system. The image material was evaluated independently by two radiologists in a blinded fashion with respect to overall image quality and the detection of rotator cuff as well as capsular and labral abnormalities. Surgical correlation was available in 27 (71 %) of 38 patients. For both systems, sensitivity and specificity for rotator cuff tears were 100 % each, and for labrum pathologies, these values were 100 and 93 %, respectively. The agreement for detection of labral pathologies between low-field and high-field examinations was good (ϰ = 0.69, ϰ = 0.61). For the detection of full-thickness tears of the rotator cuff, the agreement between the low-field and high-field MR examinations was very good and significant (ϰ = 0.94, ϰ = 1, p 〈 0.001). Overall image quality was rated good in 17 (45 %) and fair in 21 (55 %) of 38 cases on the 0.2-T MR system, and good in 32 (84 %) and fair in 6 (16 %) of 38 cases on the 1.5-T system. Motion artifacts were considered low in 24 (63 %) and moderate in 14 (37 %) of 38 cases for the 0.2-T system and low in 34 (89 %) and moderate in 4 (11 %) for 1.5-T system. Based on our results, low-field MR compares favorably to high-field MR in the detection of major abnormalities of the glenohumeral joint, at least when MR arthrography is used. Disadvantages are the duration of the examination and thus the risk of reduced image quality caused by motion artifacts.

Notes: Abstract. A case of osteoid osteoma of the capitate in a 29-year-old male is reported. The patient suffered from unspecific clinical findings and a 3-year history of uncharacteristic wrist pain. Conventional radiographs of the wrist revealed a circumscribed sclerosis in the proximal part of the capitate bone beside a diffuse demineralisation of the carpal bones. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a circumscribed, tumorous lesion with marked enhancement after IV administration of contrast agent and a highly calcified nidus, which was sharply demarcated by a small rim of granulation tissue from the surrounding spongious bone. Based on MRI findings, the diagnosis of an osteoid osteoma was established and confirmed after operation and histologic analysis.

Notes: Abstract. Percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) is the basis for most biliary interventional procedures. We recently observed the occurrence of a subcutaneous implantation metastasis after PTBD in a patient with incurable cholangiocarcinoma. Although tumor cell seeding along the catheter tract is a very rare complication, we think that PTBD should be avoided when curative resection is planned.

Notes: Abstract Silver sheathed Tl-1223 tapes were prepared by a powder-in-tube process. The critical current density of short samples was 18 kA/cm2 at 77 K. Longer tapes up to 1.2 m, prepared by sequential pressing, had a critical current density of 12 kA/cm2. From these tapes we have wound two coils. A solenoid coil with 5 windings was made of 8 tapes with a total length of 4.5 m. At 77 K the critical current of the coil was 23 A in the self generated magnetic field (18 Gauss at the centre of the coil). Using an iron yoke the critical current remained at 22 A while the generated magnetic field increased to 120 Gauss. A pancake coil with 15 windings, made of 5 tapes with a total length of 5 m, generated a magnetic field of 149 Gauss at the critical current of 12 A. From measurements of the critical current density of our tapes in applied magnetic fields, we conclude that coils made of Tl-1223 tapes can be used to generate higher magnetic fields at 77 K.

Notes: Abstract We report on the preparation of 5 μm thick (Tl,Bi)(Ba0.4,Sr1.6)Ca2Cu3O9 ((Tl,Bi)-1223) high Tc films by a modified sol-gel (Pechini) process. The process was performed by the preparation of a gel containing the metallic atoms, the coating of the substrates with the gel, the pyrolisis of the gel, and a post annealing process, without an additional thallium oxide vapour source. X-ray diffraction patterns (θ − 2θ scans) showed that the thick films prepared on LaAlO3(100) substrates consisted mainly of the (Tl,Bi)-1223 phase, with high c axis orientation, and φ scans revealed epitaxial film growth. EDX measurements showed a composition in good agreement with the (Tl,Bi)-1223 phase. Superconductivity was reached with Tc values up to 102 K.

Notes: Abstract Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the value of preoperative diagnostics in patients with pancreatic carcinoma in terms of tumor diagnosis and evaluation of resectability. Patients/Methods: From 1 September 1985 to 31 December 1997, 408 patients shown by histology to have a ductal (n=330) or periampullary carcinoma (n=78) were treated at our hospital. Results: In determining the presence of tumor, ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT) had a sensitivity of 88.3% and 94.0%, respectively; combined, they had a sensitivity of 96.2%. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) had a sensitivity of 96.2%. Preoperative aspiration biopsy cytology had a sensitivity of 71.4%. No correlation was found in the patients undergoing surgery between the preoperative level of serum CA 19-9 and the presence of distant metastases. Tumor infiltration of the portal vein was shown with a sensitivity of 33.3%, 24.3%, and 76.5% and a specificity of 93.9%, 98.9%, and 65.6% by ultrasonography, CT, and angiography, respectively. Ultrasonography and CT detected liver metastases or peritoneal carcinomatosis with a sensitivity of 35.9% each and a specificity of 91.9% and 91.7%, respectively. Conclusion: This study shows that, in 96% of patients with pancreatic carcinoma, ultrasonography and CT are adequate for diagnosis and for the evaluation of resectability. ERCP is not the method of choice in the diagnosis of pancreatic carcinoma due to its invasiveness and to the fact that it fails to demonstrate the pathological anatomical location of the tumor; it should only be used if a tumor is suspected despite negative results on ultrasonography and CT or as an additional diagnostic method to differentiate between chronic pancreatitis and carcinoma. On account of the low sensitivity of percutaneous aspiration biopsy cytology, this method is not necessary preoperatively and may even lead to the spread of tumor cells. In 7% of patients, routine laparoscopy would additionally show liver metastases or peritoneal carcinomatosis not demonstrated using the imaging techniques.
