Notes: [Auszug] Cavity quantum electrodynamics, a central research field in optics and solid-state physics, addresses properties of atom-like emitters in cavities and can be divided into a weak and a strong coupling regime. For weak coupling, the spontaneous emission can be enhanced or reduced compared with ...

Notes: Summary We calculated the energy and the wave function of the exciton for i) a V-shaped quantum wire, ii) a T-shaped quantum wire and iii) a quantum wire resulting from strain-induced lateral confinement. The full Luttinger and Bir-Pikus Hamiltonian are taken into account in the three calculations. We used different parameters inside the well and at the barrier. The basis states |3/2m〉 are defined with respect to [110], the direction of the wire in the three kinds of structures, instead of the usual [001] direction. The hole dispersion curve allows one to define an effective mass which is to be introduced in the variational calculation of the exciton binding energy. We show that the hole is confined in a wire only in case i).

Notes: Abstract To evaluate the transcriptional response of skin to tissue expansion in the dog, the expression of procollagen α1(I) mRNA and procollagen α1(III) mRNA were analyzed by in situ hybridization. This expression was evaluated in distinct skin areas (subepidermal zone, dermis, capsular zone) after 4–85 days of expansion. Within the first 4 days of expansion expression of procollagen α1(I) and α1(III) mRNA was not affected in the subepidermal and dermal zone. Only a slightly elevated level of type III procollagen mRNA was demonstrated in tissue surrounding the implanted silicone expander. After 7 days of expansion an enhanced level of procollagen α1(III) mRNA was observed in the dermis and capsular zone. A slightly enhanced type I collagen mRNA level occurred in all zones of the dermis that was even stronger in the capsular zone after 9 days of expansion. Concurrently, the number of transcriptionally active cells was significantly higher. Return to the basal level of procollagen α1(I) mRNA was attained after 40 days. At this time a significant expression of procollagenase mRNA was observed. Procollagen III mRNA expression reached its basal level on day 85.

Notes: Abstract Relative windspeed reduction was measured behind nine relatively narrow, homogeneous windbreaks in southern Ontario, Canada to assess whether any characteristics of the windspeed reduction curve could be predicted from optical porosity. The latter was determined for each windbreak using high contrast black and white photographic silhouettes on a computer digitizing system. Minimum windspeeds behind the windbreaks ranged from 29 to 71% of open windspeed; these minima were located 2 to 6 multiples of windbreak height away from the windbreak. Optical porosities of the bottom half of the windbreak ranged from 0 to 31%. Multiple regression of the shelter parameters (location and value of minimum relative windspeed) on the independent variables (optical porosity, open windspeed, surface roughness, approaching wind direction relative to the windbreak, average tree diameter and average tree spacing) showed that the minimum relative windspeed could be predicted from the optical porosity of the bottom half of the windbreak. The results suggest that optical porosity can be used to predict minimum relative windspeeds and may therefore be useful as a guide in the field evaluation of windbreaks.

Notes: Particulate fluidization and sedimentation data were taken over the Reynolds number range of 0.005 to 1,800 by means of glass spheres in both water and ethylene glycol. Porosities for each series of measurements varied from about 0.50 to 0.91 and larger. The closely sized samples of spheres used were obtained by grinding between glass plates. The data for Reynolds numbers up to about 0.5 are in excellent agreement with the laminar theory of Ruth and the porosity function from Ruth's theory gave a satisfactory correlation of all the data, both laminar and turbulent.

Notes: An analytical solution has been obtained for the longitudinal fully developed laminar flow between cylinders arranged in triangular or square array. Numerical results for the pressure drop and the friction factor are given over a wide range of spacing-to-diameter ratios. For large spacings the results can be represented by a single expression independent of the type of array. Plots are also given of velocity distributions and of the variation of the local shear stress around the periphery of a cylinder.

Notes: The Wohl-Ziegler bromination (with N-bromo-succinimide = NBS) of methyl tiglate (1b) gave a 2:1 mixture of methyl γ-bromotiglate (3b) and methyl β′-bromotiglate (5b). This ratio of γ- to β′-bromination was unaffected by changes of solvent, catalyst or size of the ester alkoxy group. The same products were obtained from the NBS treatment of methyl angelate (2b). This NBS-bromination appears to be thermodynamically controlled, since both angelic and tiglic acid as well as their methyl esters were brought into equilibrium (1 ⇆ 2 = 〉 9:1) with catalytic amounts of NBS.
