    Notes: Abstract  The Gammaridea fauna of Algeciras Bay, located on the Mediterranean side of the Strait of Gibraltar, was studied with regard to the species composition, distribution and ecology. Of the 116 species identified, 13 are recorded for the first time along the Iberian Peninsula coast, 30 for the Spanish coast and 78 for the Andalusian coast. Two species, Apherusa bispinosa (Bate 1857) and Idunella nana (Schiecke 1973), were collected for the second time in the Mediterranean Sea; this represents the first record of I. nana since its original description. The abundances of the various species and their distribution in terms of bathymetry and type of substrate were analysed, as was the enlargement of the distributional range of some species in the Mediterranean Sea. With regard to biogeographical distribution, Algeciras Bay can be considered a typical Mediterranean locality despite being situated in the Strait of Gibraltar. This is in agreement with previous studies on the amphipod fauna of the Portuguese coast.

    Notes: Abstract Thirteen species of the genus Herpyllobius Steenstrup & Lütken, 1861 are known to date. In this paper two new species are described as Herpyllobius polarsterni, and H. stocki. A comparison with congeneric species is made. A new find of H. antarcticus is recorded, and the description of Vanhöffen is confirmed. Including the present record, 15 species of Herpyllobius are now known, of which 7 have been reported from the southern hemisphere.

    Notes: Abstract Sphaeralcyon weddellensis gen. nov. et sp. nov. is described and illustrated from three colonies collected in the eastern Weddell Sea on the Polarstern cruises ANT V/3 and ANT VI/3. The new genus is compared with three closely related alcyoniid genera, all having capitate or mushroom-shaped colonies and dimorphic polyps. Sphaeralcyon is readily distinguishable from Malacacanthus by the presence of sclerites (absent in the latter genus), and from Anthomastus by sclerite shape, mainly in the form of tuberculate spheroids, and by the horny periderm on the stalk (absent in Anthomastus). Sphaeralcyon also differs from Verseveldtia in the set of sclerites, which are elongate spiny rods and a different type of tuberculate spheroid, and in the presence of eight-points as anthocodial armature (absent in Verseveldtia). The discovery of this new genus lends further support to the notion that diversity in benthic communities in Antarctica is higher than suggested by previous studies.

    Notes: Abstract Honda saline lake is located in an endorheic basin in the south of Spain. The lake is very shallow, with frequent seasonal drought and a high degree of unpredictability. It was sampled monthly during a relatively dry year (1994–1995, 5 months permanence). To establish a relationship between environmental variables (temperature, depth, salinity and conductivity), variables related to biological activity (organic matter, total solids suspension, and pH) and the planktonic community in the sampled months, various uni- and multivariate statistical methods were carried out. Dunaliella salina, D. viridis, and ciliates sp. 2 is the principal species group used to average out the dissimilarity between the samples. Multivariate analysis showed that salinity (as TDS), conductivity and pH made major and significant contributions to the explanation of the variance in the sample data.

    Notes: Abstract This is the first report of a Stellicola in the Atlantic Ocean. Members of the genus had previously been found only in the Indo-Pacific. A new species, Stellicola hochbergi, is described and compared with S. caeruleus (Stebbing, 1900), S. femineus Humes & Ho, 1967, S. illgi Humes & Stock, 1973, and S. novaecaledoniae Humes, 1976. Stellicola hochbergi may be distinguished from its congeners by: a) endopod of leg 4 with formula of 0–1; II, 1; b) third segment of the exopod of leg 3 with formula of III,I,5; c) genital segment with two dorsal elevations; d) free segment of leg 5 more than 3:1; and e) genital segment much wider than long (135 × 220 µm).

    Notes: Abstract Presently two species of the genus Mychophilus Hesse, 1865 are known: Mychophilus roseus Hesse, 1865 and Mychophilus fallax Stock, 1967. A hitherto unknown species is described herein as Microphilus palmatus n. sp. The new species is characterized by its urosome much exceeding the cephalosome-metasome in length, the ornamentation of the labrum, the shape of the palp of the first maxilla, the ornamentation of the legs 1–4 and shape of the caudal rami. These and other features of the genus Mychophilus are compared with those from other related genera of the family Ascidicolidae Thorell, 1859.

The characteristic features of A. ibericus are: the genital double-somite broadest at the anterior region, the rostrum rounded, the maxilliped with an unarmed well developed third segment, and the free segment of leg 5 trapezoidal, narrow at its base and increasing in width distally. The diagnosis of the genus is slightly modified to include the variability in the structure of the maxilliped shown by the female in species of Ascidioxynus.

    Description: Urgent necessity to understand the effect of climatic change on scleractinian cold-water coral (CWC) ecosystems arises from increasing ocean warming and acidification over the last decades. Here, presence-absence records of 12 scleractinian CWC species from research expeditions and literature were compiled and merged with model-generated pseudo-absence data and 14 environmental variables. The best results of nine species distribution models (SDM) were combined to an ensemble habitat suitability model for CWCs in the northern Southern Ocean (Weddell Sea and Antarctic Peninsula) by means of the open source R package ‘biomod2’. Furthermore, two future scenarios of increasing bottom sea temperature were used to investigate the spatial response of scleractinians to temperature change. The resulting (current scenario) potential ecological niches were evaluated with good to excellent statistical measures. The results predict that present areas of highest probability of CWC occurrence are around the Antarctic Peninsula, South Orkney Islands and Queen Maud Land with preference to geomorphic features such as seamounts. The distribution of CWC habitats is mainly driven by distance to coast and ice shelves, bathymetry, benthic calcium carbonate, as well as temperature. Under warming conditions, CWCs are predicted to expand their distribution range by 6 and 10% in 2037 and 2150, respectively, compared to present distribution. The future models using increased bottom temperature revealed a stable CWC distribution for most parts of the study area. However, habitat shifts are expected to the Filchner Trough region, the adjacent continental shelves, as well as to the eastern side of the Antarctic Peninsula.
