    Notes: As we continue to elucidate relationships between neural structures and cognitive functioning in this Decade of the Brain, it is important not to lose sight of the larger context. The brain is but one component of the complex system that is the body. We take in information and interact with the world through our bodies, and our bodies change with—and in some cases change—cognitive and emotional processing. In this introductory paper, we present an overview of a broad range of psychophysiological techniques: electroencephalography, event-related potentials, magnetoencephalography, positron emission tomography, optical imaging, functional magnetic resonance imaging, electromyograms, eye tracking, pupillometry, cardiovascular measures, and electrodermal activity. These techniques not only differ in their temporal and spatial resolutions but also in the physiological and psychological processes to which they are sensitive. With respect to the system as a whole, these techniques are thus complementary. Combining measures—old and new, central and peripheral—ultimately provides the most inferential power for attacking the questions we hope to answer with all psychophysiological measures in our quest to understand the nature of the relationship between the mind and the body.

    Notes: In a series of two experiments, subjects read sentences wherein words were flanked in the lower visual field by irrelevant words (i.e., flankers). The visual angle between the words in the sentence and the flanker words was manipulated (i.e., 0.57°, 0.97°, 1.37°). Sentence endings were either congruent or inconguruent; incongruent endings elicited a large N400 component. Flanker effects were observed for sentence final words on electrophysiological measures during the reading task and on subsequent recognition memory performance for sentence final and new words. For both measures, the flanker effect interacted with the congruency of the sentence ending as well as the visual angle between the sentence final word and its flanker. The largest and earliest flanker effects were observed for congruent endings at the smallest visual angle (0.57°); congruent endings and flankers in intermediate visual angle (0.97°) conditions displayed a similar flanker-related negativity but with a longer onset latency (490 vs. 280 ms). Congruent endings and their flankers in the largest visual angle (1.57°) conditions revealed no flanker effect.

    Notes: Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) associated with semantic relatedness were recorded in two auditory word recognition tasks. In the Memorize task, subjects listened to a list of words in anticipation of a subsequent recognition test. In the Count Nonwords task, subjects silently counted the number of nonwords occurring within a list of words. Within each list, target words were either semantically related or unrelated to the immediately preceding word. As in comparable visual tasks, the amplitude of a negative ERP component (N400) was significantly attenuated when targets were preceded by semantically related primes. This attenuation was greater in the Memorize than in the Count Nonwords task. These data are consistent with the view that the sensitivity of N400 amplitude to semantic relatedness is modulated by task variables that manipulate depth of processing.

    Notes: The nature and early time course of the initial processing differences between visually matched linguistic and nonlinguistic images were studied with event-related potentials (ERPs). The first effect began at 90 ms when ERPs to written words diverged from other objects, including faces. By 125 ms, ERPs to words and faces were more positive than those to other objects, effects identified with the P150. The amplitude and scalp distribution of P150s to words and faces were similar. The P150 seemed to be elicited selectively by images resembling any well-learned category of visual patterns. We propose that (a) visual perceptual categorization based on long-term experience begins by 125 ms, (b) P150 amplitude varies with the cumulative experience people have discriminating among instances of specific categories of visual objects (e.g., words, faces), and (c) the P150 is a scalp reflection of letterstring and face intracranial ERPs in posterior fusiform gyrus.

    Notes: ERP researchers use differences in scalp distributions to infer differences in spatial configurations of neuroelectric generators. Since McCarthy and Wood (1985) demonstrated that a spatially fixed current source varying only in strength can yield a significant Condition × Electrode interaction in ANOVA, the recommended approach has been to normalize ERP amplitudes, for example, by vector length, prior to testing for interactions. The assumptions of this procedure are examined and it is shown via simulations that this application of vector scaling is both conceptually flawed and unsound in experimental practice. Because different spatial configurations of neural generators cannot reliably be inferred from different scalp topographies even after amplitude normalization, it is recommended that the procedure no longer be used for this purpose.

    Notes: Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were used to investigate how and when a semantic factor (animacy) affects the early analysis of a difficult syntactic structure, namely, object relative sentences. We contrasted electrophysiological and behavioral responses to two object relative types that were syntactically and lexically identical and varied only in the order of the component animate and inanimate nouns [Inanimate (Animate) vs. Animate (Inanimate)]. ERPs were recorded from 40 subjects to each word of 30 I(A) and 30 A(I) sentences that occurred randomly among a set of various other sentence types read for comprehension. ERP effects to the early noun animacy manipulation were observed beginning with the initial noun and extending past the main clause verbs. We interpret the timing and multitude of electrophysiological effects, including the N400, P600, and left-anterior negativity, as evidence that both semantic and syntactic, and perhaps other types of information, are used early during structural analysis and message-level computations as needed for comprehension.

    Notes: We describe a method, based on recordings of the electroencephalogram (EEG) and eye movement potentials (electrooculogram), to track where on a screen (x, y coordinates) an individual is fixating. The method makes use of an empirically derived beam-forming filter (derived from a sequence of calibrated eye movements) to isolate eye motion from other electrophysiological and ambient electrical signals. Electrophysiological researchers may find this method a simple and inexpensive means of tracking eye movements and a useful complement to scalp recordings in studies of cognitive phenomena. The resolution is comparable to that of many commercial systems; the method can be implemented with as few as four electrodes around the eyes to complement the EEG electrodes already in use. This method may also find some specialized applications such as studying eye movements during sleep and in human–machine interfaces that make use of gaze information.

    Notes: Two different event-related potential (ERP) components were used to investigate the temporal processing of semantic and phonological encoding during implicit picture naming. Participants were shown pictures and carried out a dual choice go/nogo decision based on semantic information (i.e., whether the picture was of an object or an animal) and phonological information (i.e., whether the picture's name starts with a vowel or a consonant). In addition to the already established lateralized readiness potential (LRP; related to response preparation), we introduce the N200 (presumably related to response inhibition) as a tool for measuring online language processing. Both, the LRP and the N200 data indicated that semantic processing began earlier than phonological processing. The data are discussed in the context of language production models. Therein, the LRP and N200 results, taken together, favor a serial or cascaded processing model of language production in contrast to a parallel processing account.

    Notes: Priming effects to words are reduced when modality changes from study to test. This change was examined here using behavioral and electrophysiological measures of priming. During the study, half of the words were presented visually and half auditorally; during a subsequent lexical decision test, all words were presented visually. Lexical decisions were faster for within- than cross-modality repetitions. In contrast, modality influenced recognition only for low-frequency words. During lexical decision, event-related brain potentials were more positive to studied than unstudied words (200–500 ms). A larger and shorter duration effect was observed for within- than cross-modality repetitions (300–400 ms). This latter effect is viewed as an electrophysiological index of modality-specific processing associated with priming. Results suggest that multiple events—both modality-specific and modality-nonspecific—underlie perceptual priming phenomena.

    Notes: To examine changes in semantic memory organization and use during aging, we recorded event-related potentials as younger and older adults listened to sentences ending with the expected word, an unexpected word from the same semantic category, or an unexpected word from a different category. Half of the contexts were highly constraining. In both groups, expected words elicited less negativity 300–500 ms (N400) than unexpected ones, and unexpected words elicited smaller N400s when these were categorically related. Whereas younger adults showed the greatest N400 reduction to unexpected but related words in high constraint contexts, older adults showed the opposite tendency. Thus, unlike younger adults, older adults as a group do not seem to be using context predictively. Older adults with higher verbal fluency and larger vocabularies, however, showed the younger response pattern, suggesting resource availability may offset certain age-related changes.
