Notes: We have developed a self-healing mercury-wetted target as a practical source of soft x-ray radiation for photoexciting extreme ultraviolet lasers. A threaded rod, rotating in a pool of mercury, demonstrates a soft x-ray conversion efficiency similar to that of expendable gold-coated targets in synchronous photopumping of a photoionization Xe2+ laser at 109 nm. Surfaces self-heal or are continuously regenerated by rewetting, while mercury debris is removed by evaporation from the target chamber walls and optics. Long target lifetime and self-cleaning performance of the new target system are attractive features in future high-repetition-rate, high-throughput applications for photopumping of extreme ultraviolet or soft x-ray lasers, and more generally as incoherent sources for soft x-ray lithography and spectroscopy.

Notes: We have examined the absolute yield of keV x-rays emitted from gaseous plasmas created by the intense irradiation of large Xe clusters. We find that 〉10 μJ of x rays with photon energies above 1 keV are produced from clustering Xe gas targets when heated by 250 mJ, 2 ps laser pulses at an intensity of ∼1017 W/cm2. The yields show strong laser intensity dependence and variation with Xe cluster size. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary Circulating lymphocytes of patients with recurrent herpetic, aphthous and other oral mucosal diseases, as well as of persons with intact oral mucosa were examined with direct immunofluorescence method using HVH and adenovirus hyperimmune conjugated sera. Some of the circulating lymphocytes showed a specific fluorescence both in patients and in persons with intact oral mucosa. Increased herpes-positivity was observed only in erythema exsudativum multiforme and increased adeno-positivity in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis, especially in cases with constantly recurring aphthae. The possible pathologic role of the circulating virus-antigen-carrier lymphocytes is presumed.

Notes: Summary Lymphocyte transformation tests were carried out in patients with recurrent aphthae and control persons, using heat treated Herpesvirus hominis and adenovirus antigens of different types. From the virus antigens examined, only the Herpesvirus hominis and adenovirus type 1 antigens caused blastogenic transformation in higher rate in the lymphocyte cultures of aphthous patients, than in those of the control persons. Plasma cell reaction was observed with some adenovirus types, and the appearance of polynuclear giant cells was detected besides the lymphoblasts in the lymphocyte cultures of certain individuals examined.

Notes: Abstract Lymphocyte responsiveness to phytohaemagglutinin and viral antigens was studied in children with Down's syndrome and in controls. Mitogen-responsiveness in the patients was significantly reduced as compared to the control values. Using the lymphocyte transformation test, trisomic patients showed more than a twofold increase in sensitivity to herpes simplex virus as compared to controls. The same test did not show any essential difference between the two groups when adeno- and influenza viruses were used. Immunofluorescence technique, with specifically conjugated antiviral sera, permitted the detection of specific fluorescence in 30% of the patients with Down's syndrome indicating the presence of oncogenic adenovirus type 12 antigen in the circulating lymphocytes. No antibodies—or only very low titres—against adeno- and herpes simplex viruses were demonstrated in the sera of trisomic patients. Mononuclear leukocytes from these patients often showed structural alterations. The incidence of infectious herpes simplex virus and Candida albicans in the saliva of patients was higher than in the control group. It seems that Down's syndrome involves partial disturbance of both the cellular and humoral immune functions—at least with respect to certain viral antigens.

Notes: Abstract The presumable relationship between viruses and malignant disease has been studied. Approximately 4000 assays for antibodies to adenovirus were carried out with sera of patients with malignant and nonmalignant diseases of the urogenital organs and other organic diseases. The search was directed in the first place at antibodies to the early non-virion antigens of adenovirus-12 of oncogenic properties. On the evidence of the complement fixation reaction antibodies to adenoviruses were found to be less frequent in malignant tumors and in hypertrophy of the prostate than in the control group. Antibody to the non-virion antigen of adenoviruses was found in 53 per cent of patients with neoplastic diseases and prostatic hypertrophy, in 18 per cent of those with urogenital diseases other than tumors and in 4 per cent of those with other organic diseases. The results point to a possible role of adenoviruses in tumors of the urogenital organs.
