    Notes: Abstract Sio Guyot, in the westernmost edge of the Mid-Pacific Mountains, is a large, complex volcanic edifice rising to more than 1200 m below sea level. The summit is divided into two flat-topped areas by a WNW-trending sediment-filled trough. Seismic reflection profiles reveal three acoustic units: an upper transparent layer (pelagic cap), a lower opaque layer (reef- and lagoon-derived sediments), and an acoustic (volcanic) basement. Free-air gravity anomalies indicate three eruptive centers or conduits within the main edifice, which apparently was constructed during late Cretaceous time on a broad basement swell or plateau that today is more than 3400 m below sea level (1500 m above regional abyssal depths).

    Notes: Abstract The Mid-Pacific Mountains are guyots whose volcanic pedestals have been constructed on a broad basement plateau, the flanks of which are downfaulted. Edifice construction may have been controlled by an orthogonal system of intersecting faults trending roughly ENE and NNW. Low amplitude gravity anomalies observed over the Mid-Pacific Mountains indicate complete Airy-Heiskanen isostatic compensation, crustal thickening, and eruption on thin elastic lithosphere. Tholeiites of the Mid-Pacific Mountains resemble lavas of Iceland and the Galapagos Islands. The orthogonal fault system, low gravity anomalies, and lava chemistry of the Mid-Pacific Mountains can be explained by eruption on or near a great ENE-trending rift system.

    Description: New charts of bathymetry, acoustic character, and sediment distribution describe the Hess Rise, a large oceanic plateau in the central north Pacific. Discrete physiographic provinces on the Hess Rise are the High Plateau, shallower than 3900 m, trending N30°W; the Northeastern Flank, a smooth, gentle slope gradually increasing in depth to the northeast; the Woollard Abyssal Plain, extending farther to the northeast; the Volcanic Province with its high peaks and ridges along the southern margin of the Hess Rise; the Mendocino Fracture Zone to the south, expressed by broad, planar seafloor regions bordered by ridges and scarps; the Western Steps, formed by structural benches on the western side of the Rise; and the Emperor Deep, between the rise and the Emperor Seamounts. Five types of acoustic units have been mapped and interpreted: a transparent layer, predominantly of biosiliceous pelagic clay; a stratified layer, predominantly of nannofossil ooze; a diffuse layer of debris flows that seem to have originated mostly in the Volcanic Province; an opaque horizon commonly formed of volcaniclastic sediments that are usually found on the seafloor of the Mendocino Fracture Zone; and a hyperbolic horizon, indicating outcrops of igneous rock. The pronounced effect of bottom currents on the present-day environment of deposition in the Hess Rise is evidenced by the presence of the opaque horizon, which is interpreted as an erosion surface, and by current moating, abrupt thinning of surface layers and truncation of subbottom reflectors. The widespread erosion on the seafloor of the Mendocino Fracture Zone is attributed to the flow of Antarctic bottom water.

    Description: The basement morphology and sediment thickness of the Hess Rise, an oceanic plateau in the central North Pacific, have been mapped on the basis of seismic reflection profiles. The acoustic stratigraphy on and around the rise is correlated with the lithostratigraphy at Deep Sea Drilling Project sites 464, 310, 465, and 466. A total sediment isopach chart of the rise reveals small-scale departures from the expected sedimentary pattern (thick sediment in shallow areas; thin sediment in deep areas). Sediment-filled basement depressions result from mass transport; thin sediment (〈50 m) occurs on steep scarps, basement ridges, and areas affected by bottom currents. A pre-Senonian sediment isopach chart shows a thickening from less than 50 m to more than 250 m of sediment from the northeast to the southwest. This trend seems explainable only in terms of the time-transgressive nature of seafloor formed at a mid-ocean ridge. The axial trend of the rise (N30°W) parallels nearby Mesozoic magnetic lineations and seems to be isochronous as deduced from the Deep Sea Drilling Project data. The Hess Rise began developing in late Aptian time along a segment of the Pacific-Farallon Ridge. Important events in the history of the rise are late-stage volcanism on the southern margin of the rise along the Mendocino Fracture Zone, tectonism and volcanism about 85 Ma that resulted in a major regional unconformity (reflector C), and another period of tectonism and volcanism between 65 and 43 Ma that coincided with the formation of the Emperor Seamounts and created structural benches on the western side of the rise. A significant change in the paleoenvironment that apparently occurred around the Paleogene-Neogene boundary (∼25–20 Ma) caused pronounced changes in the depositional environment and resulted in another major regional unconformity (reflector A).
