Notes: In Bi12TiO20 with an applied ac voltage the coupling for two-wave mixing can reach an extreme value at the transient moment tp when the internal electric field is zero. This is because of the changing polarization state of the pump wave during field reversal. The internal field is found to be the sum of the applied field and a time developing screening field arising from charge redistribution. Therefore, at the moment tp the amount of the screening field is equal to the value of the applied field and thus can be measured. Also tracking of the temporal course of the electric screening field is possible. The buildup of screening fields leads to an intensity dependence of tp for a given shape of the ac voltage.© 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract On the basis of the theory of coupled waves the amplitudes of the first-order diffracted waves and the diffraction efficiency is calculated for sequentially superposed phase gratings stored in dielectric reflection holograms. The investigations are restricted to the case of a fixed reference wave during recording and Bragg-angle incidence. By analogy to the transmission volume grating the coupling effects which appear between incident beams and diffracted waves give the possibility of building up beam-couplers and -splitters with certain coupling parameters determined by the recording process. Moreover, reflection gratings allow a favourable combination between coupling and reflecting properties and avoid the diffraction efficiency oscillations that are characteristic of transmission gratings. The performance of the reconstruction process with several waves simultaneously allows the tuning of the intensities of diffracted waves with dependence on amplitude or phase differences between incident beams.

Notes: Abstract Based on the theory of coupled waves the simultaneous diffraction of two waves at a plane dielectric reflection volume hologram is described. By analogy to the transmission volume grating the intensities of the output beams strongly depend on the phase shift between the incident waves and the phase shift of the grating with respect to the interference structure of the read-out waves. This gives the possibility of transferring the incident energy from one wave into the other and can be used for the modulation or deflection of the reconstructed beams. The separate determination of the different kinds of phase shifts by intensity or phase measurements is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Based on the two-dimensional coupled-wave theory, the simultaneous diffraction of two finite waves with non-constant amplitude distribution at a finite non-uniform dynamic volume reflection grating is described. A coupled differential equation is derived and solved numerically with the aid of a two-dimensional Runge-Kutta method. The results for the chosen example of a planar volume reflection grating both for pure phase and absorption gratings show the dependence of the fidelity and diffraction efficiency on the normalized parameter grating strength, on the phase shift with respect to the interference pattern of the read-out waves and on the absorption modulation. In contrast to the transmission grating, a high fidelity of the enhanced beam can be achieved for reflection gratings. The numerical results are compared with the solution of the one-dimensional theory.

Notes: Abstract A three-dimensional model describing two-wave mixing in photorefractive crystals with finite beams of arbitrary shape is presented. The well-known longitudinal and transverse geometries are generalized by allowing an arbitrary orientation of the local grating vector. The coupled equations for the wave amplitudes are solved numerically in the small-angle approximation by introducing the light paths as characteristics. The influence of amplitude distributions and phase-front curvatures as well as the influence of geometrical arrangements and crystal properties (i.e. optical activity, externally applied voltage) on the energy exchange and the evolution of the polarization states is investigated. It is demonstrated that scanning the cross-section of the finite signal beam behind the crystal allows analysis of the coupling process inside the crystal which cannot be studied directly. The results of experiments with finite beams carried out on a BSO crystal are in good agreement with the numerical calculations.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we give an exact solution of the coupled differential equation system as developed by Kogelnik [1] for the case of symmetrical recording without neglecting the second differentials. This generalized solution is applicable to dielectric, absorption and so-called mixed volume holograms. It is shown that under special assumptions and approximations we get the same equations for the diffraction efficiency as derived by Kogelnik. In this first part of the paper transmission holograms are only investigated and in the second part we will give the solution for reflection holograms.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract In this paper we give an exact solution of the coupled differential equation system as developed by Kogelnik [1] for the case of symmetrical recording without neglecting the second differentials for the reflection volume hologram. This solution is applicable to dielectric, absorption and so-called mixed volume holograms. There are some remarkable distinctions between our results and those got by Kogelnik for the case of absorption and mixed holograms. It is shown, that under special assumptions and approximations or for special combinations of the material parameters we get the same relations as Kogelnik.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we investigate the possibility of using thick holograms as diffraction gratings. We compare the well-known parameters of the plane diffraction grating such as dispersion, efficiency, resolution, and others, with those for volume holograms. The calculations for the case of volume holograms are based on the theory of coupled waves. Experiments were performed with volume-phase holograms in transmission, stored in dichromated gelatine layers. The investigations show that the volume hologram fulfills two functions simultaneously. It acts as a spectral predecomposer and also as a high-resolving spectral apparatus.

Notes: Abstract Holographic chirped gratings with parallel grating lines have been fabricated by recording the interference structure of a plane wave and a cylindrical wave in a photoresist layer on a monomode glass waveguide. These gratings will be useful elements for the imaging of guided waves in integrated optics. A theoretical approach for treating their imaging properties is presented. The experimental results are described theoretically.

Notes: Abstract Based on the theory of coupled waves the diffraction efficiency (DE) of Bragg reflectors on planar glass waveguides is described for the case of obliquely incident waves. The coupling coefficients of the different types of mode conversion are determined both by a perturbational analysis and by fitting of the theoretical DE curves to the experimental data. Results on the fabrication and use of photoresist gratings on monomode glass waveguides as beam splitters and beam reflectors are given.
