Notes: A comprehensive investigation of electromagnetic wave and instability phenomena in partially ionized, magnetized dusty plasmas has been carried out. By employing the multi-fluid balance equations along with the Maxwell equations, a compact set of coupled field equations for the cases in which the dust grains are either robust (vd=0) or dynamic is derived. These systems of partial differential equations are used to study wave phenomena and resistive tearing mode instabilities analytically as well as by means of numerical simulations. For robust dust grains, it is shown that coupled sound-Alfvén waves can appear even in the absence of ion-neutral collisions. The unstable tearing modes are coupled to convective drift modes, if the dust number density is inhomogeneous. In the induction equation two new source terms for self-generation of magnetic fields can be identified. In parameter regimes that are characterized by dynamic dust grains, the low-frequency phenomena develop on timescales that are governed by the dust particle inertia rather than the ion inertia, as it is the case in dust-free plasmas. The results of this investigation should be useful in understanding the properties of low-frequency electromagnetic wave phenomena and the formation of coherent structures in dusty magnetoplasmas whose main constituents are negatively charged dust grains, singly charged positive ions, and neutrals. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Magnetohydrostatic equilibria with two relevant length scales are considered. Their ratio Ε is assumed to be small. Regular solutions in the sense of singular perturbation theory are discussed and the magnetic flux function A (2-D case) and Euler potentials α, β (3-D case) are shown that can be expanded into convergent power series in Ε. This ensures further the existence of weakly 2-D and 3-D equilibria within a bounded domain.

Notes: A set of nonlinear equations for multi-component partially ionized dusty magnetoplasmas is developed, taking into account the contributions of frictional thermalization, collisional heating in the energy equations on one hand, and those of ionization and recombination in the continuity equations on the other hand. The present nonlinear equations form a tool for numerical simulation studies of various collective effects in the presence of sources and sinks. However, in order to illustrate possible applications of the present system of equations, two examples of thermal condensation instabilities are discussed. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract  This study investigated the influence of ”softstart-polymerization” on the clinical performance and marginal integrity of polyacid-modified resin restorations (PMR) in class V cavities. Eighty PMR restorations were placed in 20 patients [40 Dyract (DY); 40 Hytac (HY)] with (n pat =10) and without preparation (n pat =10). Restorations were light cured for 40 s either conventionally (CP) or with a lower light intensity for the first 10 s (SSP). Each patient received four restorations (DY-CP, DY-SSP, HY-CP, HY-SSP), which were examined clinically according to modified USPHS criteria, and by quantitative SEM-analysis after 7 days (baseline), 6 months and 1 year. Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney-U test (P≤ 0.05) and error rates method. Clinically, no restoration showed recurrent caries or crevices. After 1 year, margins of 24–47% of the HY- and 36–53% of the DY-restorations were rated ”Bravo”. Marginal discoloration occurred in 20–37% in HY- and in 18–21% in DY-restorations. The error rates method revealed no significant differences between materials or between polymerization modes with and without preparation. Pairwise testing showed that without preparation, the marginal adaptation to dentin was significantly worse compared to enamel for HY with both polymerization modes, for DY with SSP. With preparation, no significant differences were found. Cavity preparation may have an influence on differences in marginal quality between enamel and dentin.

Notes: Abstract. Purpose: The purpose of this article was to assess the impact of intravenous (IV) anticholinergic hyoscine butylbromide in abdominal magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with oral magnetic particles (OMP) [ABDOSCAN, Ferristene (USAN), Nycomed Imaging AS, Oslo, Norway]. Materials and methods: In 31 patients with abdominal tumors, T1-weighted spin-echo (SE) images (SE 600/15; 1.5 T) were obtained without and with IV hyoscine butylbromide (20 mg) before and after administration of 800 ml of OMP. Two blinded readers assessed motion artifacts, bowel-wall visualization, and lesion delineation on the four sets of T1-weighted images. The two-tailed Wilcoxon paired sample test was used for statistical analysis (p 〈 .05). Results: Hyoscine butylbromide reduced motion artifacts and improved bowel-wall visualization on precontrast and OMP-enhanced images at a statistically significant level (p= 0.0006–0.037). The lowest degree of artifacts was recorded on OMP images with hyoscine butylbromide. OMP with hyoscine butylbromide significantly improved lesion delineation compared to studies without antiperistaltic drug before (p= 0.019) and after OMP administration (p= 0.01). Conclusions: The authors conclude that the use of IV hyoscine butylbromide is recommended for OMP-enhanced abdominal MR imaging with T1-weighted SE pulse sequences at 1.5 T.

Notes: Abstract. Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a relatively rare, mostly benign, condition. We report a case of chemotherapy-induced PCI with free retro- and intraperitoneal gas in a 17-year-old man with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Chest radiography and upright abdominal radiography showed free intra- and retroperitoneal gas; computed tomography demonstrated subserosal gas collections. Conservative treatment with oxygen, metronidazol, and parenteral alimentation was performed, and PCI resolved within 2 weeks.
