Notes:
Summary For determining the duration of the different phases in the generative cycle of the anterior digestive tract squamous epithelia of rabbits by means of historadioautography tritium thymidine was used as a precursor in order to label the percentage of DNA-synthesising cells and the fate of these cells within a population. The DNA synthetic time S and the duration of mitosis M were found to be nearly constant with only little variation, while for G 1 (presynthetic gap) and the migration time T (migration between generative layer and area subjacent the zone of desquamation) considerable variations were observed. G 2 (postsynthetic or premitotic gap) appeared to have a sharply limited minimal duration and was considered to represent a pool of cells waiting for mitosis, if necessary. Every mitosis is supposed to be an equal division with respect to the developmental potency of the f 1 cells. For the calculation of the cycle time C (duration of the generative cycle) the examination of the basal layer was found to be sufficient. With a given tritium index (percentage of tritium labelled cells) the renewal time of the total epithelial layer overlying the germinal layer can only be estimated regarding its order of magnitude.
