    Description: The biodiversity and high productivity of coastal terrestrial and aquatic habitats are the foundation for important benefits to human societies around the world. These globally distributed habitats need frequent and broad systematic assessments, but field surveys only cover a small fraction of these areas. Satellite-based sensors can repeatedly record the visible and near-infrared reflectance spectra that contain the absorption, scattering, and fluorescence signatures of functional phytoplankton groups, colored dissolved matter, and particulate matter near the surface ocean, and of biologically structured habitats (floating and emergent vegetation, benthic habitats like coral, seagrass, and algae). These measures can be incorporated into Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs), including the distribution, abundance, and traits of groups of species populations, and used to evaluate habitat fragmentation. However, current and planned satellites are not designed to observe the EBVs that change rapidly with extreme tides, salinity, temperatures, storms, pollution, or physical habitat destruction over scales relevant to human activity. Making these observations requires a new generation of satellite sensors able to sample with these combined characteristics: (1) spatial resolution on the order of 30 to 100-m pixels or smaller; (2) spectral resolution on the order of 5 nm in the visible and 10 nm in the short-wave infrared spectrum (or at least two or more bands at 1,030, 1,240, 1,630, 2,125, and/or 2,260 nm) for atmospheric correction and aquatic and vegetation assessments; (3) radiometric quality with signal to noise ratios (SNR) above 800 (relative to signal levels typical of the open ocean), 14-bit digitization, absolute radiometric calibration 〈2%, relative calibration of 0.2%, polarization sensitivity 〈1%, high radiometric stability and linearity, and operations designed to minimize sunglint; and (4) temporal resolution of hours to days. We refer to these combined specifications as H4 imaging. Enabling H4 imaging is vital for the conservation and management of global biodiversity and ecosystem services, including food provisioning and water security. An agile satellite in a 3-d repeat low-Earth orbit could sample 30-km swath images of several hundred coastal habitats daily. Nine H4 satellites would provide weekly coverage of global coastal zones. Such satellite constellations are now feasible and are used in various applications.

    Description: The marine areas of South America (SA) include almost 30,000 km of coastline and encompass three different oceanic domains--the Caribbean, the Pacific, and the Atlantic--ranging in latitude from 12∘N to 55∘S. The 10 countries that border these coasts have different research capabilities and taxonomic traditions that affect taxonomic knowledge. This paper analyzes the status of knowledge of marine biodiversity in five subregions along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of South America (SA): the Tropical East Pacific, the Humboldt Current,the Patagonian Shelf, the Brazilian Shelves, and the Tropical West Atlantic, and it provides a review of ecosystem threats and regional marine conservation strategies. South American marine biodiversity is least well known in the tropical subregions (with the exception of Costa Rica and Panama). Differences in total biodiversity were observed between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans at the same latitude. In the north of the continent, the Tropical East Pacific is richer in species than the Tropical West Atlantic, however, when standardized by coastal length, there is very little difference among them. In the south, the Humboldt Current system is much richer than the Patagonian Shelf. An analysis of endemism shows that 75% of the species are reported within only one of the SA regions, while about 22% of the species of SA are not reported elsewhere in the world. National and regional initiatives focusing on new exploration, especially to unknown areas and ecosystems, as well as collaboration among countries are fundamental to achieving the goal of completing inventories of species diversity and distribution.These inventories will allow accurate interpretation of the biogeography of its two oceanic coasts and latitudinal trends,and will also provide relevant information for science based policies.

    Notes: Autologous and allogeneic mixed lymphocyte cultures (AMC and MLC) were assayed for blastogenesis, generation of cytotoxic potential, and the effect of interferon (IFN-α) on these features. The cells of the mixed cultures lysed K562. Daudi, and autologous and allogeneic phytohaemagglutinin blasts. Stimulator-specific cytotoxicity was observed only in MLC. B blasts induced with Staphylococcus aureus were only affected in a stimulator-specific manner. Short-term IFN treatment of the MLC-derived effectors before the lytic assay enhanced the nonspecific component of cytotoxicity. Cell proliferation was considerably lower in AMC than in MLC. This was decreased when IFN-α was added at the initiation of the cultures. The presence of IFN influenced the generation of lytic potential. Comparison of the lysis of the different targets exerted by MLC-activated cells suggested that the specific component was more substantially elevated than the nonspecific one. It is likely that the IFN induced such modifications in the culture conditions that favoured the proliferation of the specific clone. Re-exposure of lymphocytes cultured in the presence of IFN to another dose of IFN before the assay had no influence on their lytic potential.

    Notes: Porous garlic skin was coated with cross-linked sodium alginate. Penetration of the hydrocolloid and cross-linking agents into the skin were detected by Fourier-Transform Infra-red, X-ray analysis, Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry and chemical micro-analysis. The skin structure, its wax coating and pores were studied to elucidate the means by which coating agents penetrate the skin. Pathways of skin penetration by gum were hypothesized. Gum penetrates by three pathways: through skin discontinuities, from beneath where the roots are found and directly through the skin. The coating adhered to the outer garlic skin and conformed to its shape.

    Notes: Almost 100% of peripheral T lymphocytes are shown to have the capacity to form rosettes with human lymphoblastoid B-cell lines, predominantly at 4°C and with lines having surface-bound IgG. Blast-transformed T cells retained this capacity and formed rosettes even at 37°C Unstimulated T cells bound less readily to B-cell blasts, stimulated by pokeweed mitogen for 72 hr. Even though rosettes, formed at 4°C, were stable for several hours at 72°C, no T-cell-mediated cytotoxicity could be detected during overnight incubation. Extreme pH values and trypsinization decreased rosette formation, whereas neuraminidase treatment enhanced the reaction. Rosette formation was independent of bivalent cations and unimpaired in the presence of inhibitors (NaF. NaN3), undiluted human or fetal call sera, protein A, sonicated sheep erythrocyte membranes, and normal or heat-aggregated human IgG. Anti-Ig, anti β2-microglobulin, or anti-T cell sera did not influence rosette formation.

    Notes: Abstract The present study examined the effects of a postpartum Social Support Group intervention on mood state, attitudes and behavior of new mothers. Intervention conditions consisted of an eight session Social Support intervention (n = 44), a no intervention condition (n= 83) and a Group-by-Mail intervention (n= 15). Attitudinal and behavioral assessments were made before and after the interventions at 6 and 20 weeks postpartum, respectively. The primary results indicate that regardless of intervention condition mothers undergo an improvement in mood from 2 weeks to 5 months posspartum. Although the Social Support intervention did not alleviate maternal depression and. in fact, may be detrimental to depressed mothers' self-confidence, it did increase mothers' proximal attention to their infants.
