    Description: In March/April 2018 during a cruise on R/V Sally Ride, SR1805, 15N-NH4+ incubations in 60mL glass serum bottles were performed to measure ammonium oxidation rates to nitrite and nitrous oxide in different depth at 3 different stations in the oxygen deficient zone (ODZ) of the Eastern Tropical North Pacific off the coast of Mexico. Water samples were collected from 30L Niskin bottles deployed with a conductivity-temperature-depth profiler (CTD, Seabird Electronics). The goal was to get a better understanding on the controls of nitrous oxide (N2O) production. The N2O production rate experiments were performed according to Bourbonnais et al. 2021 (https://doi.org/10.3389/fmars.2021.611937). Furthermore, ammonium (NH4+), nitrite (NO2-) and nitrate (NO3-) as well as N2O concentrations were determined using standard fluorometric (Holmes et al. 1999, https://doi.org/10.1139/f99-128), photometric (Strickland and Parsons 1972, hdl:10013/epic.46454.d001), chemiluminescent (Braman and Hendrix 1989, doi:10.1021/ac00199a007) and mass spectrometric techniques (McIlvin and Casciotti 2010, https://doi.org/10.4319/lom.2010.8.54), respectively. The N2O yield per nitrite produced was calculated. The archaeal ammonia monooxygenase gene subunit A (amoA) copy numbers/mL were determined using qPCR as described previously (Peng et al. 2015, https://doi.org/10.1002/2015GB005278).

    Description: Nitrous oxide is an important greenhouse gas and there is a need for sensitive techniques to study its distribution in the environment at concentrations near equilibrium with the atmosphere (9.6 nM in water at 20 °C). Here we present an electrochemical sensor that can quantify N2O in the nanomolar range. The sensor principle relies on a front guard cathode placed in front of the measuring cathode. This cathode is used to periodically block the flux of N2O towards the measuring cathode, thereby creating an amplitude in the signal. This signal amplitude is unaffected by drift in the baseline current and can be read at very high resolution, resulting in a sensitivity of 2 nM N2O for newly constructed sensors. Interference from oxygen is prevented by placing the front guard cathode in oxygen-consuming electrolyte. The sensor was field tested by measuring an N2O profile to a depth of 120 m in the oxygen minimum zone of the Eastern Tropical North Pacific Ocean (ETNP) off the coast of Mexico.

    Description: Ultramafic and mafic mine tailings are a valuable feedstock for carbon mineralization that should be used to offset carbon emissions generated by the mining industry. Although passive carbonation is occurring at the abandoned Clinton Creek asbestos mine, and the active Diavik diamond and Mount Keith nickel mines, there remains untapped potential for sequestering CO2 within these mine wastes. There is the potential to accelerate carbonation to create economically viable, large-scale CO2 fixation technologies that can operate at near-surface temperature and atmospheric pressure. We review several relevant acceleration strategies including: bioleaching of magnesium silicates; increasing the supply of CO2 via heterotrophic oxidation of waste organics; and biologically induced carbonate precipitation, as well as enhancing passive carbonation through tailings management practices and use of CO2 point sources. Scenarios for pilot scale projects are proposed with the aim of moving towards carbon-neutral mines. A financial incentive is necessary to encourage the development of these strategies. We recommend the use of a dynamic real options pricing approach, instead of traditional discounted cash-flow approaches, because it reflects the inherent value in managerial flexibility to adapt and capitalize on favorable future opportunities in the highly volatile carbon market.
