    Description: The biodiversity and high productivity of coastal terrestrial and aquatic habitats are the foundation for important benefits to human societies around the world. These globally distributed habitats need frequent and broad systematic assessments, but field surveys only cover a small fraction of these areas. Satellite-based sensors can repeatedly record the visible and near-infrared reflectance spectra that contain the absorption, scattering, and fluorescence signatures of functional phytoplankton groups, colored dissolved matter, and particulate matter near the surface ocean, and of biologically structured habitats (floating and emergent vegetation, benthic habitats like coral, seagrass, and algae). These measures can be incorporated into Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs), including the distribution, abundance, and traits of groups of species populations, and used to evaluate habitat fragmentation. However, current and planned satellites are not designed to observe the EBVs that change rapidly with extreme tides, salinity, temperatures, storms, pollution, or physical habitat destruction over scales relevant to human activity. Making these observations requires a new generation of satellite sensors able to sample with these combined characteristics: (1) spatial resolution on the order of 30 to 100-m pixels or smaller; (2) spectral resolution on the order of 5 nm in the visible and 10 nm in the short-wave infrared spectrum (or at least two or more bands at 1,030, 1,240, 1,630, 2,125, and/or 2,260 nm) for atmospheric correction and aquatic and vegetation assessments; (3) radiometric quality with signal to noise ratios (SNR) above 800 (relative to signal levels typical of the open ocean), 14-bit digitization, absolute radiometric calibration 〈2%, relative calibration of 0.2%, polarization sensitivity 〈1%, high radiometric stability and linearity, and operations designed to minimize sunglint; and (4) temporal resolution of hours to days. We refer to these combined specifications as H4 imaging. Enabling H4 imaging is vital for the conservation and management of global biodiversity and ecosystem services, including food provisioning and water security. An agile satellite in a 3-d repeat low-Earth orbit could sample 30-km swath images of several hundred coastal habitats daily. Nine H4 satellites would provide weekly coverage of global coastal zones. Such satellite constellations are now feasible and are used in various applications.

    Description: Two West Indian manatees (Trichechus manatus spp.) were reported with severe emaciation. One animal was a Florida manatee from the Everglades; the other was an Antillean manatee from Cuba. On necropsy, both animals had nephrolithiasis, pyelonephritis, and moderate to severe renomegaly. Histopathology revealed multifocal to diffuse pyelonephritis, interstitial nephritis, and nephrocalcinosis. The stones were analyzed and consisted primarily of calcium carbonate. Serum chemistry values for the Florida animal revealed no renal abnormalities. The mechanism of calculus formation remains unclear in manatees. In horses, another hindgut fermenter, the most common urolith is also calcium carbonate. Urinalyses performed on manatees are very similar to those of horses (i.e., alkaline urine, low specific gravity, and calcium carbonate crystals). Formation of uroliths in manatees may have a pathogenesis similar to equine urolithiasis.

    Notes: Abstract. Increases in the emissions of globally important nitrogen (N) oxide gases have coincided with significant changes in land use in the tropics. Clearing of tropical forests and savannas for agriculture currently represents the most extensive alteration of land cover on the planet. Over the last several decades, N fertilizer use has increased globally, and in China and the developing world, use has recently surpassed that in the developed world. The potential contribution of land-use change in the tropics to the increase in N oxides is great, yet only a few studies have measured N oxide emissions after tropical land conversion. Our summary of available research shows some conversions to pastures and a few management practices, especially those using N fertilizers, increase emissions beyond those found in undisturbed ecosystems. However, not all studies show unequivocal increases in emissions. Accordingly, we call for a mechanistic understanding of the processes controlling trace gas fluxes to adequately predict under what conditions increased emissions may occur. More measurements are needed to build and test models that may improve management of N fertilizer use in tropical agricultural systems. Given the expected expansion of agriculture and increased use of N fertilizers in the tropics, increased emissions of N oxides from the tropics are likely.

    Notes: The reduction of extended defects in ZnSe based II-VI heterostructures grown by molecular beam epitaxy on (001) GaAs is reported, using BeTe buffer layers as a novel approach. After defect selective chemical etching three different types of etch pits could be observed by optical microscopy. By the application of a thin BeTe buffer layer the density of paired Frank type stacking faults could be strongly reduced to values below 103 cm−2. The role of Se in the background pressure for the defect nucleation at the II-VI/GaAs interface is significant. It has been found that BeTe can form a smooth interface to GaAs and ZnSe which is reflected in high resolution x-ray diffraction data. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary. Two treatment strategies were compared in 155 women with pregnancy-induced hypertension who were also given comprehensive non-pharmacological care. The mean gestation at entry was 28 weeks. As long as the diastolic blood pressure (DBP) remained below 106 mmHg, oxprenolol, or oxprenolol plus dihydralazine, were given to the early treatment group, and matching placebos to the control group. Open antihypertensive treatment was provided for patients whose DBP rose above 105 mmHg. Proteinuria occurred in seven women in each group. In the early treatment group, 13 of the 78 women were delivered by caesarean section; the corresponding numbers in the control group were 27 of 76 (17 vs 36%, 95% confidence interval (CI) of difference: 5-33%); the sections included seven and 16 in the early treatment and control groups, respectively, for severe hypertension and/or fetal distress. There were five perinatal deaths, two in the early treatment group and three in the control group. Early treatment did not influence gestational age at birth or birthweight. Respiratory distress syndrome occurred in four infants in the early treated group and in 10 in the control group; 14 infants in the former group and 26 in the latter were in hospital for more than 10 days (18 vs 35%; 95% CI of difference 4.32%). These results indicate that early antihypertensive treatment with oxprenolol is safe for the fetus and newborn in pregnancy-induced hypertension, but has no advantage over non-pharmacological care in terms of fetal growth. However, it may prevent acute hypertension in late pregnancy and associated fetal distress, and thus reduce the number of caesarean sections.

    Notes: Depolarized Rayleigh and Raman scattering from fluids is composed of orientational (OR), collision induced (CI), and cross (X) contributions. In order to investigate the influence of the interaction induced terms (CI and X) on allowed spectra (OR), C2H6, a molecule with a small ratio of the anisotropic part γ to the isotropic part α of the polarizability is considered. Both Rayleigh and ν3 Raman correlation functions were determined by molecular dynamics (MD) computer simulation and compared with experiment. The investigations extend over a wide range of densities (0.67ρc–2.85ρc, where ρc is the critical density, ρc=0.206 g/cm3). The different contributions to the time correlation functions (TCFs) were simulated within the frame of a first-order center–center dipole–induced-dipole polarizability model. The potential model used was a standard two-site Lennard-Jones potential. Details concerning partial OR, CI, and X correlation functions and second moments for Rayleigh and Raman scattering are presented. At the lower densities a large CI and a smaller X contribution to the total Rayleigh TCF is found. At higher densities the X and CI contributions increase but tend to cancel each other so that the OR contribution becomes more important. Concerning the Rayleigh second spectral moments an explanation of the minimum of the experimental second moment observed at intermediate densities and of the increase of the second moment with density for higher densities is presented. Both the Raman TCFs and second moments are essentially orientational due to the large polarizability anisotropy derivative γ′. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The dynamic range of the microrheometry based on the analysis of the enforced motion of colloidal force probes by video microscopy has been extended to 40 Hz. For that purpose a novel rapid image processing system has been developed enabling the real-time data acquisition and analysis thus improving the time resolution of particle tracking to 6 ms. A second advancement consists of the development of a correction procedure accounting for two effects: First, for the smearing out of the diffraction image of the beads due to the finite data acquisition time and, second, for systematic phase shifts of magnetic bead deflection with respect to the force due to the finite response time of the superparamagnetic beads in the direction of the gradient of the magnetic field. The new method has been applied to re-study the dynamic scaling law of the frequency dependence of the viscoelastic impedance of entangled actin solutions in the frequency regime determined by the conformational dynamics and entropic tension of single filaments. The frequency dependence of the storage and loss modulus obeys the scaling laws G′(ω)∝G″(ω)∝ωα with α=0.83(8) which is only slightly higher than the theoretical prediction (α=0.75). © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Beta-endorphin is thought be an important inhibitor of LHRH neuronal activity and also to play a role in conveying information about changes in steroid levels to LHRH neurons. We have previously shown that the mRNA encoding the precursor of ß-endorphin, proopiomelanocortin (POMC), fluctuates during the estrous cycle with the most dramatic changes occurring on proestrus. POMC mRNA levels decline before the onset of LH surge release but then dramatically rise and remain elevated during the surge. In the present studies we tested the hypothesis that the decline in POMC mRNA levels immediately before the proestrous LH surge is mediated by estrogen and the rise during the surge by progesterone. To test this hypothesis, we compared changes in POMC mRNA levels between ovariectomized (OVX) and OVX estrogen (E2)-treated rats and between OVX E2-treated rats with and without progesterone. Animals were examined at hourly intervals after the administration of progesterone, then at every 4h during the LH surge. Using in situ hybridization histochemistry, we found that E2 decreased POMC mRNA levels in OVX rats before the onset of the LH surge and further suppressed levels during the surge. Compared to animals treated with E2 alone, progesterone advanced the time at which both the LH surge began and the time at which POMC mRNA levels declined. After a transient decline, POMC mRNA levels rose in these progesterone-treated animals and remained elevated throughout the period of the LH surge. These results support the hypothesis that progesterone times the LH surge and limits its appearance to one day by exerting a biphasic effect on the activity of ß-endorphinergic neurons of the arcuate nucleus.
