    Notes: Suppression of laser frequency fluctuations is an essential technology for planned interferometric detectors for astrophysical gravitational waves. Because of the low degree of residual frequency noise which is ultimately required, control topologies comprising two or more cascaded loops are favored. One such topology, used in the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory 40 m interferometer, relied on electro-optic Pockels cell phase correction as a fast actuator for the final stage. This actuation method proved susceptible to spurious amplitude modulation effects, which provided an unintended parasitic feedback path. An alternate arrangement, which achieves comparably effective frequency stabilization without using a phase correcting Pockels cell, was introduced and successfully tested. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The effects of cytoskeleton inhibitors on the invasion of Tyzzer's organism, an obligate intracellular bacterium, into cultured mouse hepatocytes were examined by double immunofluorescence observation and plaque assay. The two techniques gave comparable results. Invasion of bacteria was significantly enhanced by cytochalasin D, a microfilament disrupting drug, and markedly suppressed by vinblastine, a microtubule inhibitor. Another microtubule inhibitor, colchicine, did not show any substantial effect. However, the cytoskeletal system of cultured mouse hepatocytes was sensitive to these three drugs, as judged by inhibition of FITC-dextran uptake. These results suggest that Tyzzer's organisms invade host cells by a unique mechanism that is suppressed by the normal functions of host cell microfilaments.

    Notes: Abstract The growth characteristics of Tyzzer's organisms in cultured mouse hepatocytes were examined by direct bacterial counting and plaque assay. The viability of propagated bacteria and time required for the maximum titers depended on incubation time and inoculum dose, respectively. Both infectious titers and bacterial counts at optimum harvests were much higher than those obtained from infected mouse livers. Immunofluorescence revealed, after a lag phase of about 2 h, a linear multiplication during a 6 h period.

    Notes: Abstract A small Michelson interferometer has been configured as a tracking mirror displacement sensor in order to achieve both large dynamic range (2.1 mm) and excellent sensitivity $${\rm{(2x10}}^{--{\rm{14}}} {\rm{m/}}\sqrt {{\rm{Hz)}}} {\rm{ }}$$ across a broad frequency range (6Hz–3 kHz). The interferometer is illuminated by a simple LED, uses broadband, non-polarising beamsplitters and contains no lensing optics. A DC-coupled balanced detector provides an error signal that is used to position the tracking mirror of the Michelson interferometer so as to maintain an interferometer operating position close to the centre of a particular fringe. The total interferometric sensor provides a small, simple and cost-effective means of achieving high-resolution displacement measurements.

    Notes: Summary Between August 1985 and July 1992, at our center, 142 Japanese children had an extracardiac conduit operation to reconstruct the right ventricular outflow tract. The study group consisted of 22 of these 142 children who had a persistent fever and whose serum was positive for acute-phase reactants after the operation. We present the diagnostic findings for 10 children with infection of an extracardiac conduit that had been placed to restore the continuity of the right ventricle-pulmonary artery. They were part of the group of 22 children who were followed over the past 7 years with blood cultures, echocardiography, and67Ga imaging. All 10 developed a persistent fever and were seropositive for acute-phase reactants. Conduit infection was diagnosed in only 2 patients by the detection of vegetation on echocardiography and was diagnosed in 9 of the 10 patients by an abnormal67Ga uptake in the area of the artificial vessels used to reconstruct the pulmonary artery. The present study compared the use of blood cultures, echocardiography, and67Ga imaging in diagnosing an infection of the extracardiac conduit. The sensitivity of blood cultures in diagnosing an extracardiac conduit infection was 70% (7/10), and the specificity was 92% (1/12).67Ga imaging showed a higher sensitivity than echocardiography in diagnosing infection of an extracardiac conduit.
