Description: Rapidly developing methods of digital acquisition, visualization and analysis allow highly detailed outcrop models to be constructed, and used as analogues to provide quantitative information about sedimentological and structural architectures from reservoir to subseismic scales of observation. Terrestrial laser-scanning (lidar) and high precision Real-Time Kinematic GPS are key survey technologies for data acquisition. 3D visualization facilities are used when analysing the outcrop data. Analysis of laser-scan data involves picking of the point-cloud to derive interpolated stratigraphic and structural surfaces. The resultant data can be used as input for object-based models, or can be cellularized and upscaled for use in grid-based reservoir modelling. Outcrop data can also be used to calibrate numerical models of geological processes such as the development and growth of folds, and the initiation and propagation of fractures.

Description: Terrestrial laser scanning is used to capture the geometry of three single folded bedding surfaces. The resulting light detection and ranging (LIDAR) point clouds are filtered and smoothed to enable meshing and calculation of principal curvatures. Fracture traces, picked from the LIDAR data, are used to calculate fracture densities. The rich data sets produced by this method provide statistically robust estimates of spatial variations in fracture density across the fold surface. The digital nature of the data also allows resampling to derive fracture parameters that are more traditionally measured manually from outcrops (e.g., one-dimensional line transects of fracture spacing). The fracture statistics derived from the LIDAR data are compared with the calculated principal and Gaussian curvatures of the surface to assess whether areas of extreme curvature correlate with high-fracture density. For the folds studied, all the fracture spacing distributions showed an exponential distribution, and no significant correlation between fracture density and surface curvature was observed. This questions the validity of using curvature as a proxy for high brittle strains and highlights the need for a complete understanding of fold and fracture mechanics that include considerations of other factors including lithology, strain rate, and confining pressure, not just finite strain. The three case studies also illustrate how terrestrial laser scanning can be used to gather detailed quantitative data sets on fracture and fold distributions from outcrop analogs.

Notes: We report the first interferometric characterization of freely propagating, subpicosecond, far-infrared (FIR) light pulses. FIR light was generated via short pulse photoexcitation of a semi-insulating InP wafer. The half width of the intensity interferogram was 230 fs. The FIR light contained frequency components from 3 to 150 cm−1.

Notes: Autoionizing Rydberg states in zero field exhibit lifetimes scaling as the cube of the principal quantum number, n3, but in a linearly polarized static or microwave field the lifetimes scale as n4 due to l mixing. To mimic the effects of collisions with charged particles we have examined the effect of a circularly polarized field on the decay rate and find longer lifetimes than in a linearly polarized field, but not an n5 dependence. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Description: Background Few studies have evaluated environmental chemical exposures in relation to ovarian cancer. We previously found an increased risk of ovarian cancer among postmenopausal women in Iowa associated with higher nitrate levels in public water supplies (PWS). However, elevated nitrate levels may reflect the presence of other agricultural chemicals, such as atrazine, one of the most commonly detected pesticides in Iowa PWS. Methods We evaluated the association between atrazine in drinking water and incident ovarian cancer (N=145, 1986–2010) among 13 041 postmenopausal women in the Iowa Women's Health Study who used their PWS for ≥11 years as reported in 1989. Average levels of atrazine (1986–1987), nitrate-nitrogen (NO 3 -N, 1955–1988) and estimated levels of total trihalomethanes (TTHM, 1955–1988) from PWS monitoring data were linked to the participants' cities of residence. We computed HRs and 95% CIs by categories of the average atrazine level (not detected, ≤ or 〉0.37 parts per billion=median) using Cox proportional hazards regression adjusting for ovarian cancer risk factors. Results Atrazine was detected in water samples from 69 cities where 4155 women (32%) lived and levels were moderately correlated with NO 3 -N (=0.35) and TTHM (=0.24). Atrazine levels were not associated with ovarian cancer risk with or without adjusting for NO 3 -N and TTHM levels (p-trend=0.50 and 0.81, respectively). Further, there was no evidence for effect modification of the atrazine association by NO 3 -N or TTHM levels. Conclusions In our study with low atrazine detection rates, we found no association between atrazine in PWS and postmenopausal ovarian cancer risk.

Description: Preliminary dynamic modelling, using TOUGH2/ECO2N, has been carried out to assess the suitability of a site in the UK North Sea for sequestering CO 2 . The potential storage site is a previously unused saline formation within the Permian Rotliegend sandstone. Data regarding the site are limited. Therefore, additional input parameters for the model have been taken from the literature and nearby analogues. The sensitivity of the model to a range of parameters has been tested. Results indicate that the site can sustain an injection rate of around 2.5 Mt a –1 of CO 2 for 20 years. The main control on pressure build-up in the model is the permeability of the unit directly beneath the Rotliegend in the location of the proposed storage site. The plume diameter is primarily controlled by the porosity and permeability of the site. A comparison between static, analytical and dynamic modelling highlights the advantages of dynamic modelling for a study such as this. Further data collection and modelling are required to improve predictions of pressure build-up and CO 2 migration. Despite uncertainties in the input data, the use of a full three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulation has been extremely useful for identifying and prioritizing factors that need further investigation.

Description: Objective Diazinon, a common organophosphate insecticide with genotoxic properties, was previously associated with lung cancer in the Agricultural Health Study (AHS) cohort, but few other epidemiological studies have examined diazinon-associated cancer risk. We used updated diazinon exposure and cancer incidence information to evaluate solid tumour risk in the AHS. Methods Male pesticide applicators in Iowa and North Carolina reported lifetime diazinon use at enrolment (1993–1997) and follow-up (1998–2005); cancer incidence was assessed through 2010(North Carolina)/2011(Iowa). Among applicators with usage information sufficient to evaluate exposure-response patterns, we used Poisson regression to estimate adjusted rate ratios (RRs) and 95% CI for cancer sites with ≥10 exposed cases for both lifetime (LT) exposure days and intensity-weighted (IW) lifetime exposure days (accounting for factors impacting exposure). Results We observed elevated lung cancer risks (N=283) among applicators with the greatest number of LT (RR=1.60; 95% CI 1.11 to 2.31; P trend =0.02) and IW days of diazinon use (RR=1.41; 95% CI 0.98 to 2.04; P trend =0.08). Kidney cancer (N=94) risks were non-significantly elevated (RR LT days =1.77; 95% CI 0.90 to 3.51; P trend =0.09; RR IW days 1.37; 95% CI 0.64 to 2.92; P trend =0.50), as were risks for aggressive prostate cancer (N=656). Conclusions Our updated evaluation of diazinon provides additional evidence of an association with lung cancer risk. Newly identified links to kidney cancer and associations with aggressive prostate cancer require further evaluation.

Description: Total least squares regression is a reliable and efficient way to analyze the geometry of a best-fit plane through georeferenced data points. The suitability of the input data, and the goodness of fit of the data points to the best-fit plane are considered in terms of their dimensionality, and they are quantified using two parameters involving the minimum and intermediate eigenvalues from the regression, as well as the spatial precision of the data.
