Notes: Abstract. The prevalence of anastomotic strictures in esophageal anastomoses provides us with limited information about the anastomotic healing process. This prospective study evaluates the exact esophageal anastomotic diameters in 256 patients who underwent esophagectomy and esophagogastrostomy without pyloroplasty (n= 107) or total gastrectomy and Roux reconstruction (n= 149). No perioperative chemoradiotherapy was given. Anastomotic strictures and diameters were assessed during endoscopy by a separately inserted (inflated to the anastomotic width) balloon catheter. The anastomotic diameters increased significantly during the first postoperative year in the esophagectomy (p= 0.001) and gastrectomy (p 〈 0.001) groups. The anastomoses in the gastrectomy group were significantly wider than those in the esophagectomy group 3 (25.7 versus 19.9 mm), 6 (28.5 versus 22.0 mm), and 12 (30.5 versus 23.3 mm) months after surgery (p 〈 0.001). Neither the anastomotic site (neck or chest) in the esophagectomy group (p= 0.176) nor that in the gastrectomy group (abdomen or chest) (p= 0.577) influenced the anastomotic diameter. Benign anastomotic strictures were most frequently found after 3 months and after esophagectomy. Esophagojejunostomies performed with 2 linear stapling devices or cartridge size 28 mm showed the widest anastomoses with only 1 stricture. Esophagogastric anastomoses following esophagectomy are narrower and develop more strictures than esophagojejunal anastomoses after total gastrectomy, but both dilate during the first year.

Notes: Abstract Previous work has shown that gerbils that could discriminate the effects of an injection of pentobarbital and the effect of saline, as shown by the animals' differential responding (left or right turn) in a T-shaped maze (state-dependent behavior), choose the saline associated position of the maze when challenged with bemegride in conjunction with the barbiturate. The present study examined whether differential responding in a T-maze would appear when gerbils were required to differentiate a pentobarbital (15 mg/kg)-bemegride (20 mg/kg) mixture from a saline condition (group 2) from the start of the discriminative training. The acquisition rate for this group was compared with that of another group which was required to discriminate the barbiturate, when given alone, from the no drug condition (group 1). Complete discrimination had occurred after 20 training sessions in group 1 whereas none was noted for group 2. Hereafter the bemegride was withdrawn and group 2 continued the regular training with pentobarbital solely vis-à-vis saline. Complete discrimination appeared within the next 10 sessions. After session 20 group 1 were given challenge trials which were interposed in the regular training with bemegride, metrazol, and cocaine. Bemegride (20 mg/kg), metrazol (40 mg/kg), but not cocaine (40 mg/kg), antagonized the pentobarbital (15 mg/kg) produced discrimination.

Notes: Abstract Choice responding in a T-shaped maze has been made contingent upon whether or not rats experienced certain drug effects. The drug discriminative cues used in the present state-dependent (StD) model were those of phencyclidine (PCP) and ditran. The specificity of these cues and their possible drug inhibition and antagonism was studied. It was found that the lower the training dose used the slower the appearance of the drug discriminative formation. Transfer testings with ketamine and cyclohexamine showed that they were interchangeable with PCP. The order of their relative potency was: cyclohexamine 〉 PCP 〉 ketamine. Atropine transferred to ditran. Administration of compounds not structurally related to the training drugs did not show transfer. Pretreatment with parachlorphenylalanine (p-CPA) or tetrabenazine (TBZ) plus imipramine did not indicate inhibition or antagonism in PCP trained rats. Tacrine (THA) and especially physostigmine effectively antagonized the ditran-induced cues. Yohimbine and neostigmine did not.

Notes: Abstract Bacteria were counted with acridine orange epifluorescence technique in two humic lakes during 3 years. Less than 1% of the cells were found attached to detritus aggregates. 73% of the total number and 48% of the total volume were smaller than 1 µm. The mean cell volume ranged from 0.10 to 0.35 µm3 with the highest cell volumes occurring during early summer contemporarily with the growth of the bacterial biomass and probably indicating favourable growth conditions. The mean density of bacteria in oligotrophic brown-water lakes is higher than in oligotrophic clear-water lakes. The development of bacterial biomass showed a regular and seasonally dependent pattern with maxima during early summer and autumn. The importance of different factors for the regulation of bacterial biomass is discussed. Three different approaches were used to estimate bacterial production. These resulted in an average production rate of 15–60 µg C · l−1 · d−1 during the growing season. It was concluded that allochthonous sources comprised a significant part of the energy supply to the bacteria in the two humic lakes.
