Description: The brGDGT abundances was microwave extracted from the sediment using (DCM):MeOH solvent twice. Then the polar and apolar part were separated and undergo High Performance Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometery (HPLC-APCI-MS, Agilent 1200) to quantify brGDGT concentration and fractional abundances.

Description: Paleoclimate reconstructions appear to be unavoidable steps in the future climate change understanding and especially the local calibration of the paleoclimate proxies. The Mongolian Plateau in particular, is a scarcely studied area. Here we present a latitudinal transect from the southern Siberian Baikal area to the Mongolian part of the Gobi desert: the New Mongolian-Siberian DataBase (NMSDB). The 49 surface samples presented in this dataset are from different types: moss polsters, surface soil samples and lacustrine top-cores. Two paleoclimate proxies have been carried here: pollen analysis and biomarkers (glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers, GDGTs). The actual bioclimate parameters of each sample sites are derived from the ASTER data (NASA, 2014) for the elevation (m a.s.l.) and the WorldClim2.0 interpolated climate database (Fick et Hijmans, 2017) for the climate parameters. The latitude, longitude and elevation as well as the sample type and the proxy type for each site is given in this dataset. We also indicate the main vegetation type surrounding each surface samples.

Description: Here we present the pollen data obtained for the DEEP core of Lake Ohrid located at the border between Albania and F.Y.R. of Macedonia. The very long sequence covers the last 500 ka BP in ca. 200 m. The study has been carried out by several European palynological laboratories. The age model of this part of the core is based on 10 tephra layers and on tuning of biogeochemical proxy data to orbital parameters. The original paper, published by Sadori et al. 2016 (https://doi.org/10.5194/bg-13-1423-2016), has been followed by a corrigendum due to chemical procedure problems that affected 104 samples. The record shows a progressive change from cooler and wetter to slightly warmer and drier interglacial conditions. This shift in temperature and moisture availability is visible also in vegetation during glacial periods. Pollen results support the notion that Lake Ohrid has been a refugium area for both temperate and montane trees during glacials.

Description: This dataset presents the chronological framework, (bio-)geochemical, mineralogic stable isotope, pollen, and tephrochronologic data of the upper 448 m of the DEEP site (5045-1) sediment sequence recovered from the central part of Lake Ohrid (Macedonia, Albania) under the umbrella of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) and the project Scientific Collaboration on Past Speciation Conditions in Lake Ohrid (SCOPSCO). The investigated interval comprises fine-grained muds with intercalated tephra layers and mass movement deposits of mostly less than 5 cm thickness. Two tephra layers of thicknesses more than 5 cm were excluded prior to age-depth modelling, which is based on tephrostratigraphy, tephrochronology, magnetostratigraphy, and tuning of biogeochemical proxy data versus local orbital parameters. (Bio-)geochemical analyses comprise X-Ray fluorescence scanning at 2.5 mm resolution (Potassium and Calcium intensities), and total inorganic carbon (TOC) and total organic carbon (TOC) determinations at 16 cm resolution. The relative abundance of quartz minerals (Quartz peak area, 16 cm resolution) was detected by means of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FTIRS). Oxygen and carbon stable isotope were analysed on (interglacial) sediments where endogenic calcite crystals were found to be abundant. Pollen data presented herein at 64 cm resolution comprise a sub-dataset of the total pollen counts and presents relative percentages of arboreal taxa minus pine (AP-pine), and of deciduous oaks, respectively. Tephrochronologic data comprises geochemical fingerprint analyses of individual glass shards found in the sediments of Lake Ohrid, and a new Ar/Ar age for tephra V5 from the Montalbano Jonico section. Climate time series data are derived from a transient 784 ka simulation using the earth system model LOVECLIM as well as NOAA reanalysis precipitation data of the Lake Ohrid region for the tim period 1979-2017.
