Notes: Abstract: Apoptosis and expression of apoptosis-regulating proteins, Bcl-2 and Bax, have been observed in human breast carcinomas. The authors investigated whether expression of Bcl-2 and Bax proteins and apoptotic index (AI) had significance in cases of primary breast cancer. The authors evaluated Bcl-2 and Bax immunoreactivity and AI in primary breast cancers with the ApopTag method in 91 breast cancer patients retrospectively with long-term follow-up (median 60 months). Bcl-2 expression was seen in 60 (65.9%) cases and Bax expression was observed in 59 (64.8%) cases. Increased Bcl-2 and absence or low Bax immunoreactivity were significantly associated with low AI, high tumor grade, axillary lymph node involvement, postoperative recurrence, and metastasis. Thirty-five (38.5%) samples expressed high AI, which correlated with low tumor grade, absent axillary lymph node metastasis, and low levels of Bcl-2 with Bax overexpression. In univariate analysis, the variables associated with short relapse-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) were large tumor size, axillary lymph node involvement, high histologic grade, low AI, high Bcl-2 expression, and absence or low Bax expression. In multivariate analysis, only Bcl-2 expression, lymph node status, and histologic grade were of independent prognostic value with respect to RFS and OS. Because the vast majority of the patients in this study received chemotherapy, it can be concluded that these apoptotic markers were also predictive of response to chemotherapy. Immunostaining of apoptosis-related genes, Bcl-2 and Bax, together with AI, may stratify high- versus low-risk breast cancer patients.

Notes: The crystallinity, surface morphology, and I-V characteristics of the Ag thin films deposited on fractal substrates by rf magnetron sputtering have been investigated. The poor crystallinity, fractal surface morphology, and abnormal nonlinear I-V behavior of the thin films have been observed. The crystallinity of the films deposited on the fractal substrates is improved by increasing the substrate temperature and the thickness of the thin films. The nonlinear I-V characteristics are influenced by the thickness of the thin films, substrate temperature, and measuring environment.

Notes: Abstract  Perforated patch recording with nystatin, amphotericin B and gramicidin can be more difficult in the hands of some investigators than others. In addition, it is difficult to introduce low molecular weight substances such as dyes into the cytoplasm in such experiments. We have determined that β-escin represents a convenient, easy-to-use alternative to less water-soluble ionophores.

Notes: Abstract This study proposes a mathematical model which was developed from the ‘O'Melia-Ali’ and ‘Adin-Rebhun’ models, to describe the entire filtration cycle. The three coefficients appearing in this model were calculated for different operating conditions using 30 cm depth filter experiments. The concentrations and headloss profiles simulated for different filter depths using these coefficients were found to fit very well with experimental results.

Notes: This article deals with the synthesis and properties of poly[(propylene glycol maleate)-co-(propylene glycol phthalate)] diol (PGMPD)/polyester-urethane or polyether-urethane hybrid polymer networks (HPNs). The polyurethane type and the molar ratio of NCO/OH have an effect on their properties. The structure-property relationship is discussed as well. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Insulin was co-immobilized with a cell adhesion factor - fibronectin or polyallylamine - on a surface-hydrolyzed poly(methylmethacrylate) film. Chinese hamster ovary cells overexpressing human insulin receptors were cultured on the film in the absence of serum or soluble proteins. While insulin immobilization did not affect cell adhesion, insulin immobilized on fibronectin-immobilized film reduced the adhesion. Addition of the tetrapeptide Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser (RGDS) inhibited cell adhesion onto fibronectin-immobilized films while cell adhesion onto polyallylamine-immobilized films was not inhibited by RGDS. Small amounts of immobilized insulin (1 to 10% of the amount of free insulin required to achieve cell growth acceleration) were sufficient to stimulate cell proliferation. The maximal mitogenic effect of immobilized insulin was greater than that of free insulin. In addition, co-immobilization with the adhesion factor remarkably enhanced the mitogenic effect. The phosphorylation of the receptor with free insulin attained the maximum degree very rapidly but ceased quickly. On the other hand, the receptor phosphorylation with immobilized insulin was accompanied by a longer induction period and lasted a longer period of time than that with free insulin. Insulin co-immobilization on fibronectin or polyallylamineimmobilized films reduced the induction period by enhancement of cell adhesion. The early and long-lasting receptor activation might have been caused by the greater mitogenic effect of co-immobilized biosignaling polypeptides. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Description: Soil quality is important in measuring sustainable land-use and soil-management practices. It is usually assessed by evaluating important physical, chemical, and biological soil properties. For this study, a site-specific 22 variables representing pertinent soil (0–10 cm) and groundwater properties were selected as potential soil-quality indicators in a coastal salt-affected farmland of E China. To investigate the role of groundwater in soil-quality assessment, we designed two sets of minimum data sets (MDSs). Minimum data set 1 (MDS1) had inputs of the 19 soil chemical and physical properties whereas MDS2 was based on the 22 soil and groundwater properties. Using principal-component analysis, discriminant analysis, and soil-quality-index (SQI) model, we demonstrated the procedures of MDS selection, indicator normalization, and integration of MDS into SQI value for soils used for the two cropping systems. Results indicated selection of SOCD, AK, and ρ b as MDS1 indicators but MDS2 indicators included SOM, SOCD, Cl, Na, WT g , and EC g . These were found to be the most effective discriminators between the two cropping systems. Available K (AK) made greatest contribution to SQI using MDS1 indicators, however, WT g , EC g , and Cl were the greatest contributors to the SQI for MDS2. Contribution of SOCD to SQI was severely inhibited in cotton–barley rotation system while EC g and WT g contributions to SQI were inhibited in rice–rape rotation system. In general, cotton–barley rotation system had a better soil quality over rice–rape rotation system as the former had higher SQI values than the latter for both MDSs. Crop parameters did also exhibit significant relationship with the SQI values using MDS2 but it was not significant for MDS1. Our results suggest that in addition to soil chemical, physical, and biological indicators, groundwater properties particularly the WT g and EC g are also important for assessing soil quality in an intensively farmed coastal area.

Description: Mixed turbidite–contourite depositional systems result from interactions between down‐slope turbidity currents and along‐slope bottom currents, comprising excellent records of past oceanographic currents. Modern and ancient systems have been widely documented along the continental margins of the Atlantic Ocean. Yet, few examples have so far been identified on the North‐west African continental margin, limiting understanding of the sedimentary and palaeoceanographic evolution in this area. This work uses two‐dimensional seismic reflection profiles to report, for the first time, the presence of three giant sediment mounds beneath the headwall region of the Sahara Slide Complex. The sediment mounds are elongated and separated by two broad canyons, showing a north‐west/south‐east orientation that is roughly perpendicular to the continental margin. These mounds are 24 to 37 km long and 12 to 17 km wide, reaching a maximum height of ca 1000 m. Numerous slide scarps are observed within and along the flanks of the mounds, hinting at the occurrence of submarine landslides during their development. Based on their geometries, external shapes, internal seismic architecture and stratigraphic stacking patterns, it is proposed that these sediment mounds comprise down‐slope elongated mounded drifts formed in a mixed turbidite–contourite system during four evolutionary stages: onset, growth, maintenance and burial. The significance of this work is that it demonstrates the gradual transition from a turbidite system to a full mixed turbidite–contourite system to be associated, in the study area, with the establishment of strong ocean currents along north‐west Africa.
