Description / Table of Contents: Summary A sensitive method for the extraction and atomic-absorption spectrometric determination of bismuth with zinc dibenzyldithiocarbamate (ZnDBC) has been developed for aluminium alloys and solder alloys. Bismuth is extracted from relatively strong acidic solution into methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) as BiDBC complex and its concentration is determined by spraying the MIBK extract into an air-acetylene flame. Iron and copper up to 1 mg resp. 100 μg did not interfere with the extraction of bismuth in the range of 0–80 μg. The limit of detection was about 0.12 ppm in MIBK.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A new method for the determination of phosphorus in anoxic waters by high-speed liquid chromatography was developed. It is based on the extraction of molybdoheteropoly yellow with methyl propionate. The interference of co-existing soluble silica is effectively eliminated by this extraction, and micro-amounts of phosphorus ranging from 0.015 to 0.2 ppm in the anoxic waters can be determined rapidly and exactly (coefficient of variation 4.4%).

Notes: Summary A highly sensitive and selective fluorescence high-performance liquid chromatography using 9-anthryl-diazomethane as a pre-labelling reagent was applied to the simultaneous microanalysis of arachidonic and eicosapentaenoic acids, and some other higher fatty acids at nanogram level in ovary of several tropical adult fishes taken at Rabaul of New Britain. An existing tendency of arachidonic and eicosapentaenoic acids as precursor of prostaglandins in the generative organ of the fishes, has been revealed.

Notes: Summary A highly sensitive fluorescence high-performance liquid chromatography, based on the fluorescence of thiochrome which is formed from oxidation of thiamine by the molybdoheteropoly acid of phosphate has been developed for the determination of trace microamounts of phosphate. The method permits the determination of phosphate in the range of 0.1 to 1.0 ng as P/10 Μl sample solution (3.23×10−7 to 3.23×10−6 mol l−3 as P or PO4), and it may be possible to apply the proposed method to the microanalysis of phosphate in various biological samples.

Notes: Summary A method is proposed for the determination of heat-stable alkaline phosphatase (HSAP) in serum. It comprises the following steps. The serum is heat-inactivated at 65°C and the residual alkaline phosphatase is allowed to react with Naphthol AS-MX phosphate. After stopping the reaction by acetone, the liberated Naphthol AS-MX is measured fluorometrically using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). This method can be applied to cancer-screening in clinical examination. It is sensitive and rapid as compared with existing methods. Linearity, accuracy and detection limit have been examined (linearity 0–2190 ng Naphthol AS-MX; coefficient of variation ≈7%; recovery ≈80%).

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A sensitive and selective spectrophotometric method with Arsenazo III has been developed for the determination of microamounts of uranium in high-purity thorium dioxide for nuclear fuel. Interferences by thorium and impurities in not more than 1 g of thorium dioxide are effectively eliminated by the preliminary extraction process in methylisobutyl ketone-hydrochloric acid and the masking actions of disodium hydrogenphosphate and ascorbic acid in colorimetry. This method can be successfully applied to the determination of uranium in a 1 g sample of thorium dioxide in the range of 1 to 50 ppm (U/ThO2).

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The utility of various organic solvents, such as acetates and ketones, for the CuDBC chelate extraction and subsequent atomic absorption spectrophotometric determination is studied. Methyl propionate was found to be the most sensitive solvent. Data for the different substances are presented.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A new type of separation of phosphate ion, along with its spectrophotometric determination, was established by liquid-liquid extraction, where the yellow heteropoly acid formed by the reaction with ammonium molybdate in acid solution is quantitatively extracted into molten benzophenone at a temperature of about 60° C. When cooled down to room temperature, the benzophenone extract converts from the liquid state to the solid state. The resulting solidified extract is dissolved in methyl propionate, and the phosphate ion in the solvent is determined spectrophotometrically by the blue heteropoly acid method. Possible interference by Si, As and Ge is eliminated by the separation procedure.

Notes: Summary A fluorescent high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of folic acid (pteroylglutamic acid) and its derivatives using permanganate as a fluorogenic reagent has been developed. In the present work, the various analytical conditions in which the fluorogenic reaction with permanganate could be applied to the HPLC of folic acid in human serum, have been studied. The present method may be employed for the rapid clinical analysis of small amounts of folic acid (≥150 ppb), without interference from coexisting natural fluorophors; the precision of the present method for folic acid was 6.6% (n=6) (coefficient of variation).
