    Notes: A newly designed, cryogenically cooled, thin Si crystal monochromator was tested at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) beamline BL3. It exhibited less than 1 arcsec of thermal strain up to a maximum incident power of 186 W and average power density of 521 W/mm2. Data were collected for the thin (0.7 mm) portion of the crystal and for the thick ((approximately-greater-than)25 mm) part. Rocking curves were measured as a function of incident power. With a low power beam, the Si(333) rocking curve at 30 keV for the thin and thick sections was 〈1 arcsec FWHM at room temperature. The rocking curve of the thin section increased to 2.0 arcsec when cooled to 78 K, while the thick part was unaffected by the reduction in temperature. The rocking curve of the thin section broadened to 2.5 arcsec FWHM and that of the thick section broadened to 1.7 arcsec at the highest incident power. The proven range of performance for this monochromator has been extended to the power density, but not the absorbed power, expected for the Advanced Photon Source (APS) undulator A in closed-gap operation (first harmonic at 3.27 keV) at a storage-ring current of 300 mA. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An experiment was performed on beamline BL 3 at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility to test the diffraction performance of a novel internally liquid-nitrogen-cooled, thin silicon crystal monochromator exposed to high heat loads. The beam parameters were chosen to closely match the conditions expected, in terms of absorbed power and beam profile, at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) for the closed gap undulator at 7 GeV and 100 mA. The cooled crystal was oriented at 11.4° in the symmetric Bragg geometry to diffract 30 keV x-rays from the Si(333) planes. The source was a 44-pole wiggler with the insertion device gap set at 25.0 mm corresponding to a deflection parameter, K, of 4.2. A tunable toroidal mirror was used to focus the wiggler beam onto the crystal. Double-crystal rocking curves were measured at several power values using different attenuators. The maximum total power absorbed by the 0.6-mm-thick crystal was 154 W at a storage ring current of 136 mA. The peak power density at normal incidence was about 420 W/mm2 corresponding to an absorbed peak power density on the crystal face of 83 W/mm2. No thermal-induced broadening of the rocking curve was observed above the average measured mounting/fabrication strain of 2 arcsec. Rocking curves were also measured as a function of coolant flow rate and pressure. No systematic broadening occurred due to flow-induced vibrations up to 6 l/min. It has been demonstrated that thin silicon crystals directly cooled with liquid nitrogen can handle high power density synchrotron beams comparable to what is expected for the APS undulators with no appreciable thermal deformation. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary The innervation of the dog's parotid has been studied by cholinesterase staining and catecholamine fluorescence. In normal glands cholinergic and adrenergic nerves are plentiful around acini, muscular blood vessels, and to a lesser extent striated ducts. The main ducts, although surrounded by many cholinesterase-positive nerves, are associated with few adrenergic nerves. Severance of the “classical” parasympathetic post-ganglionic nerve to the gland, the auriculo-temporal, caused a moderate loss of cholinesterase-positive nerves. When this procedure was combined with section of the nerves on the internal maxillary artery there was a greater loss. Fewest cholinesterase-positive nerves remained when, in addition to these two procedures, the facial nerve was cut. These findings support the concept that all three sets of nerves contain some post-ganglionic parasympathetic fibres for the dog's parotid. The source of the remaining nerves is unknown. Preganglionic parasympathetic denervation by section of the tympanic branch of the glossopharyngeal nerve did not reduce the number of cholinesterase-positive nerves. None of these parasympathetic denervations caused reduction of adrenergic nerves, indicating that they do not travel to the gland with the parasympathetic nerves. After superior cervical ganglionectomy a few scattered fluorescent nerves remained in the gland; their origin is unknown.

    Description: The Kronian moon Enceladus is constantly feeding its surrounding with new gas and dust, from cryovolcanoes located in its south polar region. Through photoionization and impact ionization of these neutrals a plasma disk is created, which mainly contains hydrogen ions and water group ions. This paper investigates the importance of ion loss by outward radial transport and ion loss by dissociative recombination, which is the dominant chemical loss process in the inner plasma disk. We use plasma densities derived from several years of measurements by the Cassini Radio and Plasma Wave Science (RPWS) electric field power spectral density and Langmuir probe (LP), to calculate the total flux tube content N L 2 . Our calculation shows that N L 2 agrees well with earlier estimates within dipole L shell 8. We also show that loss by transport dominates chemical loss in between L shells 4 and 10. Using extrapolation of available measurements we extend the study to include L shells 2.5 to 4. The results indicate that loss by transport dominates chemical loss also in between L shells 2.5 and 4. The loss rate by transport is ∼5 times larger at L shell 5 and the difference increase as L 7.7 beyond L = 5, for the net ion population. Chemical loss may still be important for the structure of the plasma disk in the region closest to Enceladus (around ±0.5 R S ) at 3.95 R S (1 R S = Saturn's equatorial radius = 60,268 km), since the transport and chemical loss rates only differ by a factor of ∼2 in this region. We also derive the total plasma content of the plasma disk in between L shells 4 and 10 to be 1.9×10 33 ions, and the total ion source rate for the same region to be 5.8×10 27 s −1 . The equatorial ion production rate P , ranges from 2.6×10 −5 cm −3 s −1 (at L = 10) to 1.1×10 −4 cm −3 s −1 (at L = 4.8). The net mass loading rate is derived to be 123 kg/s for L shells 4 to 10.

    Description: [1]  The Cassini Langmuir Probe (LP) onboard the Radio and Plasma Wave Science (RPWS) experiment has provided much information about the Saturnian cold plasma environment since the Saturn Orbit Insertion in 2004. A recent analysis (Garnier et al., 2012b) revealed that the LP is also sensitive to the energetic electrons (250-450  eV ) for negative potentials. These electrons impact the surface of the probe and generate a current of secondary electrons, inducing an energetic contribution to the DC level of the current-voltage (I-V) curve measured by the LP. In this paper, we further investigated this influence of the energetic electrons and : (1) showed how the secondary electrons not only impact the DC level, but also the slope of the (I-V) curve with unexpected positive values of the slope (2) explained how the slope of the (I-V) curve can be used to identify where the influence of the energetic electrons is strong (3) showed that this influence may be interpreted in terms of the critical and anticritical temperatures concept detailed by Lai and Tautz (2008), thus providing the first observational evidence for the existence of the anticritical temperature (4) derived estimations of the maximum secondary yield value for the LP surface without using laboratory measurements (5) showed how to model the energetic contributions to the DC level and slope of the (I-V) curve via several methods (empirically and theoretically). This work will allow, for the whole Cassini mission, to clean the measurements influenced by such electrons. Furthermore, the understanding of this influence may be used for other missions using Langmuir probes, such as the future missions JUICE at Jupiter, BepiColombo at Mercury, Rosetta at the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko, or even the probes onboard spacecrafts in the Earth magnetosphere.
