    Notes: Hydrogen neutralization of chalcogen (S, Se, and Te) double-donor centers in single-crystal silicon is demonstrated with deep level transient spectroscopy. The deep-donor chalcogen concentration can be reduced by greater than a factor of 100, while in the same samples the phosphorus shallow-donor concentration decreases by only a small percentage. Both electronic levels of the double donors were fully removed by hydrogenation and recovered with an anneal at 500 °C.

    Notes: Abstract 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (calcitriol) affects differentiation and proliferation of epidermal keratinocytes in vitro and in vivo. We have studied the topical effects of calcitriol (0.08 2.0 μg/ml) and of a new vitamin D analogue, the epi-20-analogue KH1060 (0.4 –2.0 μg/ml) on epidermal proliferation in normal hairless mice. Epidermis was examined at intervals from 4 h to 8 days after a single-dose application. The mitotic rate was assessed by the stathmokinetic method and hyperplasia was scored in histological sections. Cell cycle parameters were measured by bivariale bromodeoxyuridine (BrdUrd)/DNA flow cytometry on isolated epidermal basal cells after pulse-labelling with BrdUrd. Both calcitriol and KM 1060 induced a dose- and time-dependent increase in the mitotic rate and in hyperplasia, the latter drug being the most effective. Calcitriol and KH1060 induced changes in the cell cycle traverse compatible with the regenerative reaction seen after other hyperplasiogens, but with an additionally increased accumulation of cells in the G2 phase. This is similar to that seen after topical application of retinoic acid to mouse skin. Our results are thus in contrast to the anti-proliferative effects of calcitriol observed in vitro and following treatment of the hyperproliferative disease psoriasis with calcitriol as well as other vitamin D analogues.

    Notes: Hydrogen passivation of chalcogen impurities (S, Se, and Te) in n- and p-type silicon was studied by deep-level transient spectroscopy (DLTS). After exposure to monatomic hydrogen from a remote microwave plasma, the chalcogen-related double-donor defects were completely neutralized near the exposed surface of the silicon samples (at 150 °C). Vacuum anneals of hydrogenated specimens revealed that the two donor levels of each chalcogen complex recover simultaneously. Reactivation of the double donors was quantitatively examined with DLTS measurements of hydrogenated specimens after isothermal anneals. The activation energies for reactivation of the neutralized chalcogen-impurity complexes are as follows: For isolated substitutional sulfur, selenium, and tellurium, the energies are 1.61±0.21 eV, 1.39±0.17 eV, 1.39±0.18 eV, respectively, and for the pure pairs of sulfur and selenium, they are 1.56±0.2 eV and 1.41±0.18 eV, respectively. The experimental results are discussed with regard to available calculations for hydrogen passivation of the sulfur impurity in silicon.

    Notes: The mean column velocity preference of juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar (LF 30–55 mm) was investigated by observing their spatial pattern of habitat use in a laboratory flume while varying discharge (Q) over a 18-fold range (Q=2·6–46·8l s-1). Based on 341 fish observations at three discharges (Q=2·6, 15·0 and 46·8l s-1), three separate velocity preference curves were developed using standard procedures. The mean column velocities measured at 0·6 depth for the fish positions at the set low, medium and high discharges had medians of 7, 10 and 24 cm s-1, respectively, and varied significantly between the discharges. Across the range of flows, the fish utilized mean column velocities between 0 and 56 cm s-1, but the three velocity preference curves differed. Differences between juvenile Atlantic salmon use of habitat, defined according to mean column velocities at different discharges, were greatest at the lower end of the available range of velocities (〈20 cm s-1). Weighted usable area (WUA), the output of the instream flow model PHABSIM that is used to describe the available habitat at a given discharge, was calculated for the flume using the preference curves built at the three set discharges. The model was highly sensitive to differences between the three preference curves and WUA varied by up to a two-fold difference. Furthermore, habitat-discharge relationships derived from the three preference curves were very different. Predicted habitat losses across the modelled range of discharges varied by up to 150% depending upon which velocity preference curve was used in the model. Thus, the assumption that a single preference curve can be applied across a range of discharges is not valid and is likely to result in large errors when employing PHABSIM and other models that use similar principles.

    Notes: Understanding preferences of animals is of fundamental importance for modelling habitat quality and quantity. Important theoretical developments, for example using ideal free and ideal despotic distributions (IDD), have enabled biologists to build conceptual frameworks for relating habitat preferences of individual animals to distributions and dynamics of populations. At the same time, managers of natural resources have established predictive empirical models as a basis for understanding habitat quality. For example, the Physical Habitat Simulation model (PHABSIM) has been widely applied for managing river flows. The aim of this study was to conduct experiments, using Atlantic salmon parr, to test whether observed population distributions could be predicted using simple behaviour theory and PHABSIM. We show that predictions from PHABSIM depend crucially on population density, discharge and the interaction between density and discharge at the time when the model is parameterized. These findings can, in part, be explained by consideration and application of the IDD. However, the results of the experiments also suggest that models derived from first behavioural principles may need to be unexpectedly complex and species-specific if they are to capture the population response to variations in water discharge effectively.

    Notes: An oxalic acid solution has been proposed as a conditioning agent for resin composite restorations in two commercial adhesive systems. The durability of 163 class III restorations, including 12 class IV restorations, in cavities pre-treated with an oxalic acid total etch technique or an enamel etch with phosphoric acid was studied. Each of 52 patients received at least one of each of three experimental restorations. The restorations were evaluated yearly with slightly modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. After 5 years 95% of the restorations were evaluated as acceptable. Reasons for failure were the fracture of four fillings, including three class IV, secondary caries contiguous to two fillings and a non-acceptable colour match for one restoration. For eight class III restorations a fracture of the incisal tooth structure was registered. No differences were seen between the three experimental restorations.
