Summary This report is a contribution to the theory of the functional organisation of the brain. It is particularly concerned with correlations between the brain's cortex and the central neurovegetative representations. The facts are indicated which show how the cortex is subordinated to the neurovegetative system in so far as their reactivity is regulated thereby. The most suggestive example is the control of the mechanisms of waking and sleeping and the adaptation of the stimulus threshold for producing optimal performance. Finally the relation of experiences made by diencephalic stimulations with certain new E. E. G.-findings are discussed.

Résumé Ce rapport est une contribution à la doctrine de l'organisation fonctionnelle cérébrale. En particulier il s'occupe de la relation entre le cortex cérébral et les représentations centrales neurovégétatives. On indique les faits qui montrent comme le premier est subordonné aux dernières. Sa réactivité est reglée par les centres végétatives. L'exemple le plus suggestif est la régulation des mécanismes de la veille et du sommeil et l'adaptation des seuils d'excitabilité pour l'état de rendement maximal. Finalement les rapports des expériences faites à l'occasion des expérimentations des stimulations diencéphaliques avec certains observations sur l'action bioélectrique corticale sont discutés.

Zusammenfassung Die vorstehende Arbeit ist ein Beitrag zur Lehre von der funktionellen Organisation des Gehirnes. Im speziellen befaßt sie sich mit dem Verhältnis zwischen Hirnrinde und den zentralen Repräsentationen des Vegetativum. Es wird auf Tatbestände hingewiesen, welche zeigen, wie die erstere den letzteren insofern unterstellt ist, als der Grad ihrer Funktionsbereitschaft von diesem reguliert wird. Das prägnanteste Beispiel ist die Steuerung des Wach-Schlafmechanismus und die Anpassung der Reizschwellen für die Entfaltung von Hochleistungen. Zum Schluß wird die Beziehung der bei diencephalen Reizexperimenten gemachten Erfahrungen mit gewissen EEG-Befunden neueren Datums zur Diskussion gestellt.
