Notes: A method is presented for dealing with numerical problems in calculations of potential fields using expansions in modified Bessel functions. Using this method, problems in mathematical physics with cylindrical symmetry, e.g., volume conductor problems, can be solved with high accuracy.

Notes: Potential distributions around a model nerve fiber are computed by using analytical methods. The fiber is situated either in a homogeneous isotropic unbounded conductor or in a homogeneous isotropic cylinder. In the latter case the source is placed either centrically or eccentrically. The potential distributions are used to derive the precise electric field distribution. The results are presented in equipotential and field line maps. It is described how the inherent numerical problems in the calculations can be avoided. It is demonstrated that the boundaries of the volume conductor and the nature of the source (potential source, current source) can significantly influence the field, even at large distances from this source.

Notes: Summary The distribution of both the cardiac electric potential on the body surface and the cardiac magnetic field near the chest and back is recorded at fixed time instants of the heart cycle. The general features of both types of maps are simple and reproducible, moreover they both reveal different information.

Notes: Abstract Recent developments in digital display technology have opened a wide range of possibilities for biomedical imaging. The opportunity to use colour is an important feature of video-display systems in clinical practice. Colour coding of biomedical data is a complex matter, which, however, may lead in many cases to an enhanced diagnostic interpretation of the images displayed. In the paper procedures for colour mapping are described and illustrated by three practical examples in the fields of scintigraphy, electrocardiography and neurophysiology. The results show an extensive applicability for colour representation of biomedical data, provided the mapping procedures are carefully selected.

Notes: Abstract A computer processing method has been developed for the extraction of parameters from cardiac Doppler signals. This method is based on the nature of these signals and on the method of their measurement. The parameters are estimated after background subtraction from adequately smoothed spectrograms. The improvement gained by this method of parameter extraction from smoothed spectrograms, rather than from raw spectrograms, is demonstrated. The method is used successfully in a reference value study of cardiac Doppler signals.
