    Description / Table of Contents: Primary gingivoperiosteoplasty according to Millard consists of active presurgical orthopedic treatment with the Latham device at the age of 4 months and surgical covering of the alveolar cleft by local mucoperiosteum flaps at the age of 6 months. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the facial growth following use of the Latham device. Lateral head X-rays and plaster casts from 146 patients with unilateral and bilateral clefts of lip and palate were investigated (follow-up of 16 years). Ninety-one of these patients formed the control group and received no Latham device and no gingivoperiosteoplasty. The same surgeon and orthodontist treated all of the 146 patients. Three-dimensional growth disturbance was observed after application of the Latham device and gingivoperiosteoplasty. Forty-two percent of patients with UCLP and 40% patients with BCLP had an “open bite” following closure of the alveolar cleft (control group 5%–10%): the length of the upper jaw was shorter than in the control group and the frequency of cross-bite was higher. These results demonstrate that treatment with a Latham device followed by gingivoperiosteoplasty disturbs facial growth. Therefore this treatment should be rejected.
    Notes: Das von Latham entwickelte Gerät wird im Rahmen der aktiven prächirurgischen Vorbehandlung zur Verschmälerung von Kieferspalten eingesetzt. Es soll den simultanen Lippen- und Kieferspaltverschluß im Alter von 6 Monaten (Gingivoperiostplastik nach Millard) ermöglichen. Das Ziel dieser Untersuchung besteht in der Analyse des kraniofazialen Wachstums bei Patienten mit LKG-Spalten nach Einsatz des Latham-Geräts. Es wurden longitudinale Serien von lateralen Fernröntgenbildern sowie longitudinale Modellserien von insgesamt 146 Patienten untersucht. 91 dieser Patienten bildeten die Kontrollgruppe ohne Behandlung mit dem Latham-Gerät und ohne mukoperiostalen Kieferspaltverschluß. Ein und derselbe Chirurg und nur ein einziger Kieferorthopäde behandelten alle Patienten nach demselben Schema. Der Untersuchungszeitraum erstreckte sich über 16 Jahre. Eine dreidimensionale Wachstumsstörung wurde nach Einsatz des Latham-Geräts sowie nachfolgender Gingivoperiostplastik beobachtet. 42% der Patienten mit einseitigen und 40% der Patienten mit doppelseitigen LKG-Spalten hatten einen frontal offenen Biß nach dieser Therapie. In der Kontrollgruppe waren es 5 bzw. 10%. Weiterhin war die Oberkieferlänge bei den Patienten, die mit einem Latham-Gerät und einer Gingivoperiostplastik behandelt wurden, zu gering und es traten bei diesen Patienten häufiger frontale Kreuzbisse als in der Kontrollgruppe auf. Diese Ergebnisse belegen, daß der Gebrauch des Latham-Geräts und die anschließende Gingivoperiostplastik zu einer fazialen Wachstumsstörung führen. Deshalb sollte auf den Einsatz des Latham-Geräts in der Therapie ein- und doppelseitiger LKG-Spalten verzichtet werden.

    Notes: Summary Percutaneous lumbar discectomy has gained growing interest during recent years as an alternative to open surgery for protrusions and non-sequestrated subligamentous intervertebral disc herniations. As a less invasive method it competes with chemonucleolysis. At least two modifications are known to date: automated percutaneous lumbar discectomy (APLD) with a 2-mm suction probe and non-automated, discoscopy-monitored percutaneous lumbar discectomy with a suction rongeur and a motor-driven shaver (NAPLD). In this study these two methods are compared for the amount of material extracted, dependence upon the degree of degeneration of the disc and intrinsic technical problems, using 20 human cadaver lumbar specimens for experimental testing. Total nucleotomy was not possible with either method. APLD yielded significantly less material and proved to be less effective in severely degenerated intervertebral discs than the NAPLD procedure, as preexisting gaps within the degenerated nucleus pulposus allowed the tissue to shift away from the tip of the 2-mm probe and facilitated displacement of the probe within the anulus fibrosus. By contrast, the rongeur, which first cuts the material to be removed and then carries it away by suction, was much more effective. Further data to support the advantages of non-automated percutaneous nucleotomy are discussed. Pretreatment of the disc with chymopapain did not result in a higher yield of nucleus material when combined with APLD.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die direkte Nitridierung von verschiedenen Siliciumpulvern wurde thermogravimetrisch verfolgt. Die chemische Zusammensetzung des unter optimalen Nitridierungsbedingungen hergestellten Endprodukts lag zwischen Si3N3,41 und Si3N3,93 in Abhängigkeit vom Ausgangsmaterial. Die Gründe für die teilweise unvollständige Nitridierung werden diskutiert. Die Kinetik der Nitridierung wurde analysiert, ihre Aktivierungsenergien wuvden bestimmt. Der Mechanismus sowohl der Vorwie auch der Hauptreaktion entspricht einer Phasengrenzreaktion mit unterschiedlichen Reaktionsordnungen.
    Abstract: Резюме Методом ТГ изучено пр ямое азотирование различных порошков к ремния. Химический состав ко нечного продукта азо тирования в зависимости от исход ного материала изменяется между Si3N3,41 и Si3N3,93. Обсуждены причины различного стехиоме трического состава образующихс я продуктов. Исследов ана кинетика реакций азотировани я и определены их энергии активации. Механизм как предвар ительной, так и основной реакци и, в общем, соответствует реакц ии на границе раздела фаз с различным порядком р еакций.
    Notes: Abstract The direct nitridation of different silicon powders was investigated by thermogravimetry. The chemical composition of the final product, produced unter the optimum nitridation conditions, varied in the region between Si3N3.41 and Si3N3.93, depending on the basic material. The reasons for the incomplete nitridation ratio are discussed. The nitridation was kinetically analyzed, and the activation energies of the nitridation reaction were determined. The mechanisms of the prereaction and the main reaction generally correspond to phase boundary reactions with different reaction orders.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Unterschiede der thermoanalytischen Effekte für drei verschieden hergestellte wasserhaltige ZrO2-Pulver wurden in Verbindung mit Röntgenuntersuchungen und der pulvermetallurgischen Charakterisierung diskutiert. Es zeigte sich, daß man mit ihrer Hilfe die ZrO2-H2O-Bindung und die thermische Behandlung bei der Kalzinierung des wasserhaltigen ZrO2 formulieren kann. Sie erlauben, das Produkt mit der günstigsten Mikrostruktur für eine hohe Sinteraktivität auszuwählen, die Phasenbildung un Phasenumwandlungen zu erklären, den Energieinhalt des amorphen Materials und die thermische Stabilität der tetragonalen Phase abzuschätzen. Es erwies sich, daß die Thermoanalyse eine geeignete Methode zur Optimierung der ZrO2-Pulver-Herstellung ist.
    Abstract: Резюме Обсуждены различия т ермоаналитических кривых для трех порош ковых образцов безводной двуокиси ц иркония, охарактериз ованных порошковой металлур гией и рентгенофазов ым анализом. Тераналити ческие кривые предст авили возможность оценить связь ZrO2Н2О и термическую обрабо тку безводной двуоки си циркония. Кривые также позволи ли отобрать продукт с на иболее благоприятно й микроструктурой для высокоактивного спе кания, объяснить фазовые об разования и фазовые п ревращения, а также установить эн ергию образования аморфно го материала и термоу стойчивость тетрагональной фазы. Показано, что термический анализ я вляется подходящим м етодом оптимизации получен ия порошкообразной двуокиси циркония.
    Notes: Abstract The variations in the thermoanalytical curves for three differently produced powders of hydrous zirconia are discussed in connection with X-ray measurements and powdermetallurgical characterization. They were shown to characterize the ZrO2-H2O bonding and the thermal treatment for the calcination of hydrous zirconia. They allowed selection of the product with the most favourable microstructure for a high sinter activity, an explanation of the phase formation and phase transformations, and estimations of the energy content of the amorphous material and the thermal stability of the tetragonal phase. It was shown that thermal analysis is an appropriate method for the optimizing of ZrO2-powder production.

    Notes: Abstract A novel porous material produced via sol gel process is disclosed which is osteoinductive and biodegradable. Due to the fact that high temperatures are avoided during the production process, the degree of crystallinity is very low and the packing of the crystallites is relatively loose. These are important parameters for the biodegradation properties. Nanoporous silica gel is contained to the support of strength. The low degree of crystallinity and the high degree of porosity (50–70%, pores in the range of few microns) make the material resorbable. A second type of pores designed in the range of few millimetres supports the bone ingrowth. An in vitro formation of bone tissue is shown when the material is exposed to tissue culture medium and inoculated with human osteoblastic cells. Animal tests show the formation of new bone tissue and first steps of biodegradation.
