Notes: [Auszug] Oceanic conditions in the tropical Atlantic have a pronounced annual cycle which is almost in phase with the annual changes in the surface winds. When the winds near the Equator are relaxed, in March and April, horizontal thermal gradients are at a minimum and the surface currents are weak and ...

Notes: Abstract The problem of optimal replacement for two andn components with a single unloaded standby is solved. The solution is determined by the relative costs of failure for each component and is independent of the actual failure time, other than immediate replacement being specified. Conditions for the existence of a single critical number policy are derived and the general policy is described.

Notes: Abstract Since 1973, four Japanese ore carriers have made regular surface measurements of temperature and salinity, every 60 nautical miles, between New Caledonia and Japan. They have followed two different routes; a western one from Noumea (22°16′S, 166°27′E) in New-Caledonia to Miyazu, Wakasa Bay (35°32′N, 135°12′E) in Japan crossing the equator at 150°E, and an eastern one to Hachinohe (40°32′N, 141°32′E) in Japan crossing the equator at 160°E. On each of these routes, the seasonal variations of navifacial temperature and salinity have been described in connection with the meteorology. Long-term variations have also been revealed. Finally, a description of the surface water masses has been attempted.

Description: Seasonal records of tropical sea-surface temperature (SST) over the past 10(5) years can be recovered from high-precision measurements of coral strontium/calcium ratios with the use of thermal ionization mass spectrometry. The temperature dependence of these ratios was calibrated with corals collected at SST recording stations and by (18)O/(16)O thermometry. The results suggest that mean monthly SST may be determined with an apparent accuracy of better than 0.5 degrees C. Measurements on a fossil coral indicate that 10,200 years ago mean annual SSTs near Vanuatu in the southwestern Pacific Ocean were about 5 degrees C colder than today and that seasonal variations in SST were larger. These data suggest that tropical climate zones were compressed toward the equator during deglaciation.

Description: The salinity, temperature and current distributions have been measured during the TROPAC cruise (Oct./Nov. 1996) at two sections, i.e. 143°E and 150°E, during the final phase of the 1995/1996 La Niña. The results present evidence that the fresh pool and the salinity front at its eastern boundary had moved far to the west, and that a barrier layer existed in that phase. The observed currents support the idea that advective processes play an essential role in creating the thermohaline structure during this ENSO phase. In relation with this process, it is found that the westward subduction mechanism of relatively dense eastern equatorial waters may apply during that phase.
