Notes: The applications of liquid crystal variable retarders in the production of spin-polarized electrons and in the determination of the polarization of optical radiation from atoms excited by polarized electrons are discussed. The advantages of using liquid crystal variable retarders in the measurement of Stokes parameters are insensitivity to the incident photon direction, large transmission diameter, variable retardation over large wavelength range without mechanical movement, and in situ calibration. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A systematic optimization of the components of our polarized electron source has markedly improved its long term stability over earlier versions. The major factors shortening the lifetime of the source have been identified. The essential parts of the spin polarized electron source, such as the vacuum system, crystal holder, cleaving mechanism, caesium dispenser, oxygen admittance tube, and computer control activation features are discussed. The lifetime of the source now exceeds 500 h with a constant polarization of 28.5%. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A current measuring system capable of detecting single ions is described. The detector operates at a frequency of nominally 900 kHz and utilizes a superconducting inductor with high Q(Q≈8500) and a cryogenic GaAs field-effect transistor (FET) amplifier with noise temperature less than 0.3 K. Noise measurements of the FET are presented along with details of the construction of the superconducting inductor.

Notes: The herbage dry matter (DM) harvested, N response and herbage quality of monocultures and mixtures of Holcus lanatus (local ecotype) and Lolium perenne (cv. S24) were compared in a field experiment. The species were seeded in the proportions 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0: 100; three rates of N were applied (150, 300 and 450 kg ha−1) and five or six cuts were taken in each of four harvest years. H. lanatus established poorly in the seeding year and in the first full harvest year L. perenne contributed 1, 54, 76, 89 and 99% of the total herbage DM harvested from the five sward types (mean of N treatments). Only a small decline in the L. perenne content of the swards occurred during the experiment.Total amounts of herbage harvested were significantly lower for H. lanatus monoculture than for the other sward types in three of the four harvest years However, L perenne monoculture yielded significantly more total DM than mixtures with H lanatus in only one of the four harvest years. The five sward types did not differ overall in response to N fertilization. Nitrogen, phosphate and potassium content of the herbage was greatest for H. lanatus monoculture and decreased with increasing proportions ofL perenne present in the mixtures. Thus the presence of a high proportion of H. lanatus in mixture with L. perenne cv. S24 had

Notes: Investigations were conducted into the seed reserves, shoot and seminal root growth of Lolium perenne, Festuca arundinacea, Holcus lanatus and Poa trivialis. Data are presented for the caryopsis, palea and lemma weights of these species. Shoot lengths of Lolium and Festuca were very similar but seminal root lengths of Lolium were longer and emerged earlier than those of Festuca. The caryopsis in Lolium lost weight much more rapidly in germination than Festuca. Seedlings of Lolium and Festuca showed similar increases in shoot length but Lolium had more rapid rates of seminal root growth and weight loss from the caryopsis. It is suggested that poor field establishment of Festuca may be due to poor mobilization of seed reserves and consequential poor seminal root growth. The possibility of selecting for good seminal root development in Festuca to improve establishment is suggested.

Notes: A bakeable ultrahigh-vacuum valve, with a coarse screw thread and conical springs, eliminates slip common to differential thread valves and reduces the bakeout-induced compression and release of the valve disk. The straight-through valve isolates a polarized electron source from gas scattering regions and maintains precision electron optical paths using a right-angled insertable electron lens. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The two outgoing electrons from (e,2e) scattering processes are selected by two 180° electrostatic analyzers whose energy dispersed output spectra are detected by microchannel plates followed by resistive anodes. These detectors permit the identification of all multiple coincident events occurring within the dispersal width of the analyzers. It was found that the time difference between the two detectors for correlated events is strongly dependent on the energy of the incident electrons, which consequently causes the time coincidence window to move systematically. This behavior has been accounted for by a model that determines the time taken by an electron to go around a hemispherical analyzer. A description is given of a data collection system that can compensate for the shift in the coincidence spectra and that records all multiple coincidence events with an increase in the overall coincidence count rate of about two orders of magnitude relative to conventional non position sensitive detectors without position sensing. The performance of the system is shown for an (e,2e) spectrum of argon.
