Notes: To evaluate individual differences in the recognition of facial wrinkles, we asked 40 Japanese female observers to identify wrinkles using transparent sheets over frontal facial photos of four females aged 20, 39, 55 or 75 years. We then measured the number and length of those wrinkles by image analysis. Wrinkles identified by those 40 observers showed aged-related increases in the standard deviation (SD) values for number and length but age-related decreases in the coefficient of variation (CV)%. Therefore, to clarify factors affecting the degree of wrinkle detection, wrinkles were identified by two groups of age-matched male and female observers, by two groups that differed by age, and by two other groups, one of which who felt that there was an improvement in their wrinkles after application of an antiwrinkle agent and another group who did not feel that there was any improvement after the same treatment. Improvement was observed by replica image analysis in all groups. The degree of wrinkles identified was not affected by the age or by the sex of the observer group. However, the group who felt that there was an improvement in their wrinkles after treatment with the antiwrinkle agent identified a significantly higher number of wrinkles than did the group who did not feel that there was an improvement. These results suggest marked individual differences in the recognition of wrinkles. Fine wrinkles in relatively young subjects are difficult to detect, but moderate to marked wrinkles in middle-aged and in aged subjects can easily be detected. Concerning the cause of individual differences in the extent of wrinkle detection, observers who identified a large number of wrinkles tended to recognize not only pronounced wrinkles but also recognized fine wrinkles as ‘wrinkles’. This seems to have also affected their feelings about the success of treatment with the antiwrinkle agent.

Notes: summary  The mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V-XCu (1, 4 and 10 wt% Cu) alloys were examined. The castings for each alloy were made in a centrifugal titanium casting machine. Two shapes of specimens were used: a dumbbell (20 mm gauge length × 2·8 mm diameter) for mechanical property studies, and a flat slab (2 mm × 10 mm × 10 mm) for metallography, microhardness determination and X-ray diffractometry. Tensile strength, yield strength, modulus of elasticity, elongation and microhardness were evaluated. After tensile testing, the fracture surfaces were observed using scanning electron microscopy. The tensile strengths of the quaternary alloys decreased from 1016 MPa for the 1% Cu alloy to 387 MPa for the 10% Cu alloy. Elongation decreased with an increase in the copper content. The 1% Cu alloy exhibited elongation similar to Ti-6Al-4V without copper (3·0%). The results also indicated that the copper additions increased the bulk hardness of the quaternary alloy. In particular, the 10% Cu alloy had the highest hardness and underwent the most brittle fracture. The mechanical properties of cast Ti-6Al-4V alloy with 1 and 4% Cu were well within the values for existing dental casting non-precious alloys.

Notes: : Gelatin samples conjugated with acidic saccharides such as glucuronic acid, alginic acid oligosac-charide, and low-molecular-weight alginic acid were prepared to improve the functional properties of ossein gelatin by the Maillard reaction. The conjugation resulted in a decreased isoelectric point, retardate gelation time, low storage modulus, and low melting temperature and enthalpy of gelatin gel; in particular, low-molecular-weight alginic acid resulted in a large improvement. The alginic acid oligosaccharide-conjugated gelatins and low-molecular-weight alginic acid-conjugated gelatins had calcium-retaining ability, and the latter exhibited calcium-aggregating ability. It is thus considered that conjugation with low-molecular-weight alginic acid could be effective for providing a new type of gelatin with a soft texture and calcium-retaining and calcium-aggregating ability.

Notes: Purpose: IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is considered the most common glomerular disease in the world. Although treatment of children with severe IgAN with predonisolone (PSL) has been reported, the mid-term prognosis of paediatric patients treated with PSL is unclear. In the present study we examined the mid-term effects of PSL therapy.Method: Thirty-seven paediatric patients with IgAN (18 males, 19 females), whose biopsy findings showed acute segmental lesions including cellular crescent and adhesion in more than 10% of glomeruli examined, were prospectively treated with PSL plus heparin-warfarin and dipyridamole (Tx) for 1.5 years and followed up over 1 years after Tx end. Fifteen age and histological grade-matched children with IgAN (six males, nine females), who had never been treated with PSL, were also evaluated as a historical control. The mean observation period was 5.0 ± 1.8 years (range, 2.5–8.6 years). The histological grade (acute lesion) and stage (chronic lesion) were scored semiquantitatively based on the Shigematsu’s grade-stage system.1Result: Proteinuria decreased 1.48 g/day/1.73 m2 at the start of Tx to 0.32 g/day/1.73 m2 at the end of Tx. Eighteen patients (48.6%) achieved complete remission (CR). No patient developed chronic renal failure in Tx group, while two of the controls deteriorated renal function in the last observation. The pattern of responsiveness to Tx were divided into three groups according to the levels of proteinuria: CR, rebound (〉 0.5 g/day/1.73 m2) and incomplete remission (〈 0.5 g/day/1.73 m2). The rebound of proteinuria is usually accompanied with PSL reduction. The grade of glomerular pathology was improved with Tx (Gg: 0.8–0.3), while the stage of tubulo-interstitial change progressed (Sint: 0.7–1.2).Conclusions: The present study shows that Tx to children with IgAN showing acute lesions for 1.5 years is effective to subside acute glomerular injury. However, because clinical courses of treated patients vary in each patient, dosage and duration of PSL administration should be modified in their clinical setting.

Notes: Vertebral deformities were investigated in cultured red sea bream, Pagrus major. In the field, deformities in seedlings were categorized and their incidence was calculated. In the laboratory, the symptoms of major vertebral deformities were examined morphologically using radiographs and by making transparent skeletal specimens. The internal structure of deformed vertebrae was examined histologically. The shortened body condition had the highest incidence (0.9–8.3%) of all deformities in the seedlings. In individuals with the shortened body condition, the ratio of trunk and caudal part length to body height was smaller. These fish had skeletal anomalies in the vertebrae, mainly centrum defects (64.3%) or undersized centrums (25.2%). The specimens with centrum defects had a characteristic anomaly in the vertebrae, with plural pairs of neural and haemal spines on a single centrum. This anomaly was frequently observed in the posterior abdominal vertebrae. The internal skeletal structure of such abnormal centrums was basically the same as that of normal centrums. In all the specimens with undersized centrums, both the centrum length and diameter were shorter than normal except for the first and second centrum, and urostyle.
