    Notes: Abstract —Gephart and Forsyth’s (1984) algorithm for stress inversion of earthquake fault-plane solutions has been applied to a set of ninety intermediate and deep events occurring in the southern Tyrrhenian region between 1976 and 1995. P- and S-wave data from local seismic networks in southern Italy, the Italian National Network and international bulletins, have been used for hypocenter and focal mechanism computations. Stress inversion runs performed after accurate selection and weighting of fault-plane solutions have allowed us to identify stress space variations at a higher level of detail than available from all previous investigations carried out in the study area. The maximum compressive stress has been shown to follow the depth-decreasing dip of the Wadati-Benioff zone, along the entire zone from a depth of 90 km, to the depth of the deepest events (about 500 km). Variations to such a stress pattern have been found, possibly related to mantle dynamics and the complex composition of the subducting structure. The diffused state of down-dip compression suggests that the Tyrrhenian subduction has already evolved to the point where the lower end of the slab has reached high-strength mantle materials, the load of the excess mass is entirely supported from below and most of the subducted slab is under compression. In agreement with the lack of large, shallow thrusting events in the immersion zone, the findings of the present study appear to agree well with geodynamic models assuming a passive subduction process with eastward roll-back of the Ionian lithosphere in the study area. In this context, the depth-decrease of the slab dip may also find a reasonable explanation.

    Notes: Abstract This paper describes a travel—time analysis performed for the Italian seismic stations, in particular those operating in southern Italy, in order to study the crust and upper mantle properties in the region. Average P-wave residuals of teleseisms in the distance range 30°–95° with respect to Jeffreys-Bullen tables, at thirteen permanent and temporary stations of southern Italy, are coherent with a high velocity zone beneath Calabria and northern Sicily and low velocity material in the mantle beneath the Eolian Islands. Travel—time residuals from Tyrrhenian intermediate earthquakes show a high velocity structure which extends in a NW direction from a depth of at least 200 km down to 450 km. A damped least-squares inversion applied to DSS data confirms the existence of low velocity zones in the crust beneath the Eolian Islands, at 8–12 km depth, that agrees with previous results and with the lack of S waves from local earthquakes.

    Notes: Abstract Endothelial cells are involved in important pathological situations. They could be the target for infectious processes as for example in Cowdriosis, an important disease in cattle due to the rickettsia Cowdria ruminantium prevalent in the south of the Sahara. They are also connected to angiogenic processes related to tumor invasion. Our results indicate that AIDS related Kaposi sarcoma cells may be of endothelial origin. We conclude from our data the mobility of those cells, related to the expression of the metalloproteinases (especially the 92 kD form of the enzyme), is an important factor in Kaposi saroma dissemination and is the main factor limiting the scale up of Cowdriosis vaccine production in Bovine Umbilical Endothelial Cell line. We showed that PMA and TNF increased the 92 kD Metallaproteinase and that TGFβ, produced in an inactive form in cultures of Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells, is a potential inhibitor of Kaposi sarcoma spreading, and could also be useful in improving our process for Cowdria ruminantium vaccine production, since it reduces the sensitivity of the cells to mechanical stress without affecting significantly the overall infectious process.

    Description: Existence of a positive, decaying radial solution to the problem when 〉0 and 1〈 q 〈 p 〈( N +2)/( N –2) has been known for a long time. For =0, it is well known that this solution is unique. While uniqueness conditions for rather general non-linearities have been found, the issue has remained elusive for this problem. We prove that uniqueness is in general not true. We find that if N =3, 1〈 q 〈3, is fixed sufficiently large, and p 〈5 is taken sufficiently close to 5, then there are at least three positive decaying radial solutions.

    Description: Between 2010 and 2013, the Pollino Mountains region (south Italy), already proposed as a seismic gap, was affected by a seismic crisis of more than 5000 small-to-moderate earthquakes (maximum magnitude M L  5.0). Preliminary analyses performed in a previous work highlighted that this activity can be ascribed to normal faulting on north-northwest-trending west-dipping dislocation surfaces consistent with the general seismotectonic frame of the southern Apennines. This work contributes additional data and a more sophisticated analyses that highlight new features of the seismic swarm and support a new interpretation for the study area. We obtained high-precision locations and focal mechanisms using the double-difference method and the cut-and-paste waveform inversion method, respectively. The 3D patterns of hypocenters and focal mechanisms consistently image an ~10-km-long north-northwest-striking and west-dipping fault zone between 5 and 10 km depth, with predominantly extensional kinematics. The high-resolution data show that this zone broadens from north to south as a result of secondary faulting. The depicted geometry, with preliminary geological observation, leads to the hypothesis of multiple seismogenic normal faults rooted into more regional shallow-dipping detachments inherited from the pre-existing Apennine thrust tectonics.     Description: The possibility that the tsunami, generated as a consequence of the large Mw 9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake of March 11th 2011, could be recorded by the tide gauge stations located in the Mediterranean Sea has been investigated. We find two kinds of transient signatures which should be attributed to the far-field destabilizing effect of the tsunami on the usual tidal components: 1) the excitation of a broad spectrum of frequency fluctuations, superimposed to the diurnal and semidiurnal tidal components, 2) the change of amplitude of the low-frequency tidal components in the Mediterranean, related to the sea surface fluctuation perhaps caused by the direct transmission of the tsunami across Gibraltar.

    Description: The Calabrian Arc is an area of high seismic hazard, in the past often affected by destructive earthquakes. The seismicity of the Calabrian region is monitored by the Italian National Seismic Network integrated by the Calabrian Regional one and, in the last three years, by the Pollino temporary array. We have applied the Seismic Network Evaluation through Simulation to assess the individual contribution of each network in locating earthquakes with epicentres in the Calabrian region and surrounding. We shows that the Calabrian Regional Seismic Network greatly improves the quality of the coverage in almost the Calabria territory except in the Crotone Basin, in the Serre and in the offshore areas. We show that the contribution of the Pollino temporary array is instead restricted to a very small area centred on the Pollino Chain. Due to the presence in the Serre of important seismogenic volumes, which in the past have generated destructive earthquakes, it would be opportune to add at least several seismic stations in this area and surrounding to improve the seismic monitoring.

Infatti, gli eventi sismici che hanno interessato dagli inizi del ‘900 il territorio Italiano, hanno sistematicamente messo in risalto l’elevata vulnerabilità sismica del nostro patrimonio edilizio, ivi compresi i beni monumentali, nonché, l’inesistenza di qualsiasi attività di programmazione della manutenzione periodica ordinaria e straordinaria delle strutture sismo-resistenti, che garantiscono nel tempo la conservazione delle loro capacità di risposta alle perturbazioni esterne.Il progetto PON sul Monitoraggio in Area Sismica di SIstemi MOnumentali nasce con la prerogativa di produrre uno strumento dedicato alla tutela di strutture a valenza storico – artistica, attraverso un percorso di catalogazione, di analisi del bene inteso come elemento costituito da elementi resistenti e da materiali, di studio del sito dove la struttura è ubicata e di attività di monitoraggio.

    Description: A multidisciplinary project for the investigation of Mt. Vesuvius Structure was started in 1993. The core of the project is represented by a high resolution seismic tomography study by using controlled and natura1 sources. The main research objective is to investigate the feeding system of the vo1cano and to retrieve details of the upper crustal structure in the area. A first 2D using seismic experiment was performed in May 1994, with the aim of studing the feasibility of lIsing tomographic techniques for exploring the vo1cano interiors. Particularly, this experiment was designed to obtain information on the optimal sources-receivers configuration and on the depth extension of the volume sampled by shot-generated seismic waves. 66 three-component seismic stations and 16 single-component analogue instruments were installed by several Italian and French groups to record signals generated by three on-land, underground explosions. Sources and geophones were deployed along a 30-km NW-SE profile passing through the volcano crater. Receivers were placed at an average spacing of 250 m in the middle of the recording line and at 500 m outside. The arrival time data base was complemented by first P and S readings of micro earthquakes which occurred in the recent past within the volcano. The first arrival data set was preliminary used to determine the shallow structure of the volcano by applying Thurber's (1983) tomographic inversion technique. This analysis shows evidence for a high-velocity body which extends vertically from about 400 m below the crater down to at least 3000 m and for a shallow 300-500 m thick low-velocity cover which borders the edifice. Data from the distant shot show evidence for arrivals of deep reflected/converted phases and provide information on the deeper structure under the volcano. The results from the interpretation of 2D data are used for planning a 3D tomographic survey which will be cauied out in 1996.
