Notes: Summary The production of catecholate siderophores was studied in some selected species ofEnterobacter (Enterobacteriaceae). The extracted catecholates were separated as iron-free compounds by HPLC on a C18 reversed-phase column using methanol/0.1% phosphoric acid or methanol/0.1% formic acid as a solvent system and identified by ion spray mass spectrometry (LC/MS, MS/MS). Five catecholate compounds were identified which include 2,3-dihydroxybenzoylserine, its linear dimer and trimer, the cyclic enterobactin and an unidentified isomer of enterobactin. In addition, a new large-scale method for the isolation of catecholate siderphores is described which is based on adsorption on XAD-2 and subsequent purification on Sephadex LH20.

Description: Positron annihilation signatures associated with the outburst of the microquasar V404 Cygni Nature 531, 7594 (2016). doi:10.1038/nature16978 Authors: Thomas Siegert, Roland Diehl, Jochen Greiner, Martin G. H. Krause, Andrei M. Beloborodov, Marion Cadolle Bel, Fabrizia Guglielmetti, Jerome Rodriguez, Andrew W. Strong & Xiaoling Zhang Microquasars are stellar-mass black holes accreting matter from a companion star and ejecting plasma jets at almost the speed of light. They are analogues of quasars that contain supermassive black holes of 106 to 1010 solar masses. Accretion in microquasars varies on much shorter timescales than in quasars and occasionally produces exceptionally bright X-ray flares. How the flares are produced is unclear, as is the mechanism for launching the relativistic jets and their composition. An emission line near 511 kiloelectronvolts has long been sought in the emission spectrum of microquasars as evidence for the expected electron–positron plasma. Transient high-energy spectral features have been reported in two objects, but their positron interpretation remains contentious. Here we report observations of γ-ray emission from the microquasar V404 Cygni during a recent period of strong flaring activity. The emission spectrum around 511 kiloelectronvolts shows clear signatures of variable positron annihilation, which implies a high rate of positron production. This supports the earlier conjecture that microquasars may be the main sources of the electron–positron plasma responsible for the bright diffuse emission of annihilation γ-rays in the bulge region of our Galaxy. Additionally, microquasars could be the origin of the observed megaelectronvolt continuum excess in the inner Galaxy.

Description: Background: Depressive disorders are among the leading causes of worldwide disability with mild to moderate forms of depression being particularly common. Low-intensity treatments such as online psychological treatments may be an effective way to treat mild to moderate depressive symptoms and prevent the emergence or relapse of major depression. Methods: This study is a currently recruiting multicentre parallel-groups pragmatic randomized-controlled single-blind trial. A total of 1000 participants with mild to moderate symptoms of depression from various settings including in- and outpatient services will be randomized to an online psychological treatment or care as usual (CAU). We hypothesize that the intervention will be superior to CAU in reducing depressive symptoms assessed with the Personal Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9, primary outcome measure) following the intervention (12 wks) and at follow-up (24 and 48 wks). Further outcome parameters include quality of life, use of health care resources and attitude towards online psychological treatments.DiscussionThe study will yield meaningful answers to the question of whether online psychological treatment can contribute to the effective and efficient prevention and treatment of mild to moderate depression on a population level with a low barrier to entry.Trial registration: Trial Registration Number: NCT01636752
