    Description: The continental slope of Madagascar is underrepresented in the literature in comparison to other continental slopes worldwide. In particular, the submarine geomorphology of this zone has not been discussed in detail. During research cruise SO230 approximately 1900 km2 of high resolution multibeam bathymetric data were collected along the northwest continental slope of Madagascar. These data show four, previously unrecognised, submarine canyons extending to the toe of the continental slope in the eastern Mozambique Channel. Measured canyon thalweg lengths vary from 40 – 51 km and exhibit straight to sinuous paths. The thalweg profiles include concave, linear and slightly convex characteristics. Canyon relief decreases with depth downslope, while canyon width increases. The interfluves of the upper canyon reaches are dominated by large, square to rectangular, block-like features of 100 – 200 m vertical relief. These features decrease in prominence down slope. Canyons mark the coast-perpendicular flank of the blocks, while the coast-parallel block flanks are delineated by elongate valleys. The geomorphology of the canyons is best explained by varied stages (youthful to mature) of canyon evolution. The discovery of these canyons highlights the complexity of the Madagascan Continental slope, and the future potential for multidisciplinary research in this region.

    Description: The transfer of sediment from the upper continental slope to rise is poorly documented along the southeast African passive margin. New swath bathymetric and sub-bottom data collected in the Natal Valley, southwest Indian Ocean, provide insight into the evolution of the Tugela canyon and fan system. Several distinct downslope changes in canyon morphology are noted. The canyon increases in relief and widens with depth. Basement outcrop is restricted to the head of the canyon becoming less prominent with depth. Step-like terracing of the canyon walls and floor becomes prominent in the mid-slope portions of the canyon and is related to a marked increase in the cross sectional asymmetry of the canyon profile. The contemporary Tugela canyon rests within a depression of the last phase of infilling. The canyon is the product of downslope erosion, and incision, caused by several phases of hinterland uplift in the mid Oligocene, mid Miocene and late Pliocene. Each phase was followed by pelagic infilling of the palaeo-canyon form. Downslope, the uplift phases are preserved in the cut-terraces and axial incisions within the main canyon thalweg. The contemporary canyon is a moribund feature, sediment starvation of the shelf area by current sweeping of the Agulhas current has decreased the material available for canyon incision and fan development. Additional current sweeping by the North Atlantic Deep Water current has stunted the development of the associated fan complex.

    Description: Permafrost is a defining characteristic of the Arctic environment. However, climate warming is thawing permafrost in many areas leading to failures in soil structure called thermokarst. An extensive survey of a 600 km2 area in and around the Toolik Lake Natural Research Area (TLNRA) revealed at least 34 thermokarst features, two thirds of which were new since ∼1980 when a high resolution aerial survey of the area was done. Most of these thermokarst features were associated with headwater streams or lakes. We have measured significantly increased sediment and nutrient loading from thermokarst features to streams in two well-studied locations near the TLNRA. One small thermokarst gully that formed in 2003 on the Toolik River in a 0.9 km2 subcatchment delivered more sediment to the river than is normally delivered in 18 years from 132 km2 in the adjacent upper Kuparuk River basin (a long-term monitoring reference site). Ammonium, nitrate, and phosphate concentrations downstream from a thermokarst feature on Imnavait Creek increased significantly compared to upstream reference concentrations and the increased concentrations persisted over the period of sampling (1999–2005). The downstream concentrations were similar to those we have used in a long-term experimental manipulation of the Kuparuk River and that have significantly altered the structure and function of that river. A subsampling of other thermokarst features from the extensive regional survey showed that concentrations of ammonium, nitrate, and phosphate were always higher downstream of the thermokarst features. Our previous research has shown that even minor increases in nutrient loading stimulate primary and secondary production. However, increased sediment loading could interfere with benthic communities and change the responses to increased nutrient delivery. Although the terrestrial area impacted by thermokarsts is limited, the aquatic habitat altered by these failures can be extensive. If warming in the Arctic foothills accelerates thermokarst formation, there may be substantial and wide-spread impacts on arctic stream ecosystems that are currently poorly understood.

    Notes: The grazing incidence x-ray reflectivity is a nondestructive and sensitive technique for probing the depth profile of electron density in layered structures. This method has been utilized in the soft x-ray regime to determine the roughness of interfaces, and the epilayer thickness in InxGa1−xAs/InP and InxGa1−xAs/GaAs heterostructures, for x=0.57 and x=0.60, grown by molecular beam epitaxy. By fitting the experimental results to our model, assuming uncorrelated interfacial roughness, we conclude that the top surface roughness does not depend on the type of the substrate or presence of stress in the epilayer, and is always smaller than interfacial roughness. The main factors which control the interfacial roughness are the quality of substrate and/or growth conditions rather than strain or lattice mismatch.

    Notes: The optical spectra of a molecular-beam-epitaxially grown In0.53Ga0.47As epilayer lattice-matched on a (100) InP substrate are measured in the visible and infrared regions. The transmittance, reflectance, and their wavelength derivatives (wavelength-modulation spectra) are measured at room temperature. The spectra were analyzed by a theoretical spectral line-shape calculation based upon the band structure near the fundamental band gap. The quasidielectric functions and optical constants in the 0.6–3.1 eV range and the critical energies E0, E0+Δ0, E1, and E1+Δ1 are determined by fitting the calculated spectral line shapes to the measured spectra.

    Notes: We report operational and construction details of a simplified GaAs polarized electron source. It is contained in a modified 4.63 in. Conflat four-way cross, and uses a single 56 l/s turbomolecular pump. The design incorporates multiple cesiators to extend source lifetime, a new spring-clamp GaAs crystal mounting design to provide uniform crystal heating, and a very simple tubular 90° electrostatic deflector. We also discuss matters related to preparing, heat cleaning, and activating the GaAs crystal. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The present study examined the mechanisms by which 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) produces long-term neurotoxicity of striatal dopamine neurones in mice and the protective action of the dopamine uptake inhibitor GBR 12909. MDMA (30 mg/kg, i.p.), given three times at 3-h intervals, produced a rapid increase in striatal dopamine release measured by in vivo microdialysis (maximum increase to 380 ± 64% of baseline). This increase was enhanced to 576 ± 109% of baseline by GBR 12909 (10 mg/kg, i.p.) administered 30 min before each dose of MDMA, supporting the contention that MDMA enters the terminal by diffusion and not via the dopamine uptake site. This, in addition to the fact that perfusion of the probe with a low Ca2+ medium inhibited the MDMA-induced increase in extracellular dopamine, indicates that the neurotransmitter may be released by a Ca2+-dependent mechanism not related to the dopamine transporter. MDMA (30 mg/kg × 3) increased the formation of 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,3-DHBA) from salicylic acid perfused through a probe implanted in the striatum, indicating that MDMA increased free radical formation. GBR 12909 pre-treatment attenuated the MDMA-induced increase in 2,3-DHBA formation by approximately 50%, but had no significant intrinsic radical trapping activity. MDMA administration increased lipid peroxidation in striatal synaptosomes, an effect reduced by approximately 60% by GBR 12909 pre-treatment. GBR 12909 did not modify the MDMA-induced changes in body temperature. These data suggest that MDMA-induced toxicity of dopamine neurones in mice results from free radical formation which in turn induces an oxidative stress process. The data also indicate that the free radical formation is probably not associated with the MDMA-induced dopamine release and that MDMA does not induce dopamine release via an action at the dopamine transporter.

    Notes: 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) administration produces neurotoxic degeneration of serotonin terminals in rat brain. These effects occur only after systemic administration and not after central injection, suggesting that peripheral metabolism, possibly hepatic, is required for toxicity. Glutathione is one of the principal cellular defence mechanisms, but conjugation with glutathione can, on some occasions, increase the reactivity of certain molecules. Previous studies have shown that central administration of glutathione adducts of a MDMA metabolite produces a neurotoxicity profile similar to that of systemic MDMA. In the present study, depletion of peripheral (hepatic) glutathione by 43% with dl-buthionine-(S,R)-sulfoximine (an inhibitor of glutathione synthesis) did not attenuate MDMA-induced neurotoxicity as indicated by the 34% loss of [3H]paroxetine binding to the serotonin uptake sites in Dark Agouti rats treated with the inhibitor. However, a more profound depletion (92%) of glutathione by diethylmaleate (direct conjugation) administration significantly reduced the serotonergic neurotoxicity produced by MDMA. This depletion protocol also attenuated the hyperthermic response to MDMA. A combination protocol utilising both buthionine-(S,R)-sulfoximine and diethylmaleate that did not alter the hyperthermic response of the rats given MDMA also failed to attenuate the neurotoxicity. These findings indicate that glutathione depletion does not offer specific protection against MDMA-induced serotonin neurotoxicity in Dark Agouti rats.
