Notes: A fault scaling law suggests that, over eight orders of magnitude, fault length L is linearly related to maximum displacement D. Individual faults may therefore retain a constant ratio of D/L as they grow. If erosion is minor compared with tectonic uplift, the length and along-strike relief of young mountain ranges should thus reflect fault growth. Topographic profiles along the crests of mountain ranges in the actively deforming foreland of north-east Tibet exhibit a characteristic shape with maximum height near their centre and decreasing elevation toward the tips. We interpret the along-strike relief of these ranges to reflect the slip distribution on high-angle reverse faults. A geometric model illustrates that the lateral propagation rate of such mountain ranges may be deciphered if their length-to-height ratio has remained constant. As an application of the model, we reconstruct the growth of the Heli Shan using a long-term uplift rate of ∼1.3 mm yr−1 derived from 21Ne and 10Be exposure dating.

Notes: [Auszug] In order to understand the dynamics of the India–Asia collision zone, it is important to know the strain distribution in Central Asia, whose determination relies on the slip rates for active faults. Many previous slip-rate estimates of faults in Central Asia were based on the assumption ...

Notes: Abstract The antidepressant drug, fluoxetine (FLX), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, was administered to Syrian hamsters, and its acute and chronic effects on EEG sleep and hypothalamic temperature were recorded. Acute fluoxetine treatment at doses of 5, 10, 20 and 40 mg/kg decreased REM sleep and hypothalamic temperature in a dose-dependent manner. It increased NREM sleep, and, at doses of 20 and 40 mg/kg, it increased wakefulness. At 40 mg/kg, it decreased motor activity. During chronic treatment, tolerance developed to FLX's REM sleep-inhibiting effects, but tolerance did not develop to FLX's hypothalamic temperature-decreasing effects. Chronic FLX treatment produced circadian phase-dependent decreases in temperature beyond those that were observed during acute treatment. The apparent dissociation during chronic treatment between FLX's temperature-lowering effects and its REM-decreasing effects might be related to long-term changes in 5HT receptor function or FLX pharmacokinetics.

Notes: Abstract. Triblock copolymers containing polystyrene (PSt) and poly(4-acetoxystyrene) (PAcOSt) segments have been prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). In the first step one of the two monomers was polymerized in bulk using the initiating system α,α′-dibromo-p-xylene/CuBr/2,2′-bipyridine (1/1/3). Subsequently the resulting telechelic polymers with active bromo end group structures were used as macroinitiators for the polymerization of the second monomer under ATRP conditions. This process gave PAcOSt-PSt-PAcOSt and PSt-PAcOSt-PSt triblock copolymers with predetermined molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. Polymerization of a mixture of equal molar amounts of the two monomers yielded a random copolymer with narrow molecular weight distribution.

Notes: Summary A poly(styrene-b-isobutylene-b-styrene) triblock copolymer has been prepared by a two-step process. Polyisobutylene with Mn= 6600 and Mw/Mn= 1.12 functionalized with phenol at both ends was reacted with 2-bromopropionyl chloride to form a macroinitioator for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The synthesized difunctional PIB macroinitiator was subsequently heated with styrene xylene solution in the second step to 110°C under conditions for ATRP using the copper coordination complex CuBr/bipyridine. Both the macroinitiator and the triblock copolymer were characterized by 1H NMR and SEC. The triblock copolymer with around 25% polystyrene was found to have a narrow molecular weight distribution of 1.20.

Notes: Abstract Changes in China's temperature and precipitation extremes have been studied by using observational data after 1950. The results reveal that mean minimum temperature has increased significantly in China during the past 40 years, especially in the winter in northern China. Meanwhile, nation-wide cold wave activity has weakened and the frequency of cold days in northern China has been reduced significantly. Mean maximum temperatures display no statistically significant trend for China as a whole. However, decreasing summer mean maximum temperatures are obvious in eastern China, where the number of hot days has been reduced. Seasonal 1-day extreme maximum temperatures mainly reflect decreasing trends, while seasonal 1-day extreme minimum temperatures are increasing. A statistically significant reduction of much above normal rain days in China has been detected. Contrarily, an increasing trend was detected in much above normal of precipitation intensity (precipitation/number of precipitation days) during the past 45 years.

Notes: Summary A block copolymer having polyisobutylene (PIB) as hydrophobic segment and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as hydrophilic segments has been synthesized by a two-step process. Polyisobutylene was functionalized with phenol at both ends using BF3· OEt2 as catalyst, and then coupled with tosylated monomethoxy PEG. The reaction conditions were established by model studies. The characterization of the reaction product by NMR and PGC verified the formation of block copolymer by the coupling reaction.

Notes: Living atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 4-acetoxystyrene (1), a protected 4-vinylphenol, leading to poly(4-acetoxystyrene) with well-defined molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution was carried out in bulk with α,α′-dibromoxylene(2)/CuBr/2,2-bipyridine(bpy) as initiating system. A linear M̄n versus monomer conversion plot was found in good accordance with the theoretical line, indicating 100% initiating efficiency. The polymerization is first order in respect to monomer up to about 70% monomer conversion. Deviations from linearity at higher conversion in the first order plot are due to physical effects, i.e., to the increase of the viscosity of the reaction medium. The resulting 1-bromo-1-phenylethyl-telechelic poly(4-acetoxystyrene) (3) is a precursor of the hydrophilic poly(4-vinylphenol) and a potential new macroinitiator.

Description: Background: Nurses are an indispensable component of the work force in the health care system. However, many of them are known to work in a stressful environment which may affect their mental well-being; the situation could be worse in rapidly transforming societies such as China. The purpose of this study was to investigate anxiety symptoms and the associated factors in Chinese nurses working in public city hospitals. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was performed for Chinese nurses in public city hospitals of Liaoning Province, northeast China. Seven hospitals in different areas of the province were randomly selected for the study. The Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale was used to measure anxiety symptoms. Effort-reward imbalance questionnaire and Job Content Questionnaire were used to assess the work stressors. Univariate analysis and stepwise multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to identify the factors associated with anxiety symptoms. Results: All registered nurses in the seven city hospitals, totaling 1807 registered nurses were surveyed. Of the returned questionnaires, 1437 were valid (79.5%) for analysis. Utilizing the total raw score [GREATER-THAN OR EQUAL TO] 40 as the cut-off point, the prevalence of anxiety symptoms in these nurses was 43.4%. Demographic factors (education, chronic disease and life event), lifestyle factors (regular meals and physical exercise), work conditions (hospital grade, job rank, monthly salary, nurse-patient relationships, job satisfaction and intention of leaving), job content (social support and decision latitude), effort-reward imbalance and overcommitment were all significantly related to the anxiety symptoms. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed main factors associated with anxiety symptoms were lower job rank (OR 2.501), overcommitment (OR 2.018), chronic diseases (OR 1.541), worse nurse-patient relationship (OR 1.434), higher social support (OR 0.573), lower hospital grade (OR 0.629), taking regular meals (OR 0.719) and higher level of job satisfaction (OR 0.722). Conclusions: A large proportion of Chinese nurses working in public city hospitals had anxiety symptoms, which warrants immediate investigation and intervention from the hospital administrators. Meanwhile, results of the study suggest that proper counseling, promotion of healthy lifestyle behavior and improvements to the social environment in the work place may be helpful toward reducing or preventing the anxiety symptoms.
