    Description / Table of Contents: The book focuses on the relationship between nature conservation policies and landscape policies. This is a relevant subject due to the current need of reviving nature conservation policies, which are today affected by a general effectiveness deficiency. To this end, landscape policies can play a crucial role, bridging nature and culture, fostering more integrated approaches to nature conservation and stimulating the active participation of local communities. The book gathers reflections, researches and experiences developed on an international level on this subject by experts coming from different international contexts (Europe, U.S.A.), various disciplinary backgrounds (geographers, planners, biologists, historians, jurists, economists, etc.) and several institutional bodies (Universities, administrative bodies, international organizations such as IUCN, EUROPARC Federation, UNESCO, etc.). The overall reflections gathered in the book - which is divided in three main sections: regulations and institutional frameworks, policies, actions and tools - combine to suggest innovative visions about the relationships between nature policies and landscape policies

    Notes: Abstract Objectives: High levels of soluble E-selectin have been reported in acute and chronic inflammatory disorders. Moreover, in some types of tumor elevated values have been found while in other types reduced levels have been reported. Our aims were to determine whether soluble E-selectin levels might be useful in monitoring the progression of chronic liver disease, including hepatocellular carcinoma. Methods: Circulating soluble E-selectin was measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in the sera of 18 patients with chronic hepatitis, 44 with liver cirrhosis, and 38 with hepatocellular-carcinoma-associated liver cirrhosis. Immunohistochemical localization of E-selectin was also performed on liver tissue specimens of patients with chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Results: Serum levels of soluble E-selectin were higher in the chronic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis patients than in the hepatocellular carcinoma patients and healthy controls. Levels in the hepatocellular carcinoma patients and controls were not significantly different. In the liver cirrhosis group, divided according to the Child-Pugh classification, soluble E-selectin decreased with disease severity. Similarly, in patients with liver cirrhosis who developed hepatocellular carcinoma, soluble E-selectin decreased as the disease progressed. Immunohistochemical localization showed strong membrane staining on endothelial cells in areas rich in inflammatory cells in severe chronic hepatitis. In some hepatocellular carcinoma tissues a marked E-selectin staining was observed on endothelial cells of tumor-associated small vessels. Conclusions: The results obtained suggest that high serum levels of soluble E-selectin are associated with chronic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis, and that levels decrease in liver cirrhosis patients as the disease progresses. Patients with hepatocellular carcinoma have different types of soluble E-selectin behaviour the significance of which requires further investigation.

    Notes: Abstract The specific binding of digoxigenin-labeled lectins to carbohydrate moieties is used to characterize the carbohydrate chains bound to apolipoprotein H. Our results show that apolipoprotein H is rich in sialic acid linked α(2–6) to galactose or N-acetylgalactosamine. Sialic acid is not α(2–3)-linked to galactose. Galactose is β(1–4)-linked to N-acetylglucosamine and β(1–3)-linked to N-acetylgalactosamine. High-mannose N-glycan chains are barely detectable. After N-glycosidase F treatment the molecular weight is substantially reduced. The main band is 32,500 daltons. Carbohydrate O-linked chains, which are mainly represented by sialic acid, are α(2–6)-linked to galactose or N-acetylgalactosamine. Galactose is also organized in O-linked chains and it is β(1–4)-linked to N-acetylglucosamine and β(1–3)-linked to acetylgalactosamine. Biochemical analysis of carbohydrate structures reveals that no specific carbohydrate complex is bound to a single isoform.

    Notes: Abstract Increased nonenzymatic glycosylation of all major classes of apolipoproteins has been demonstrated in diabetes. In this work we deal with the in vitro nonenzymatic glycosylation of apolipoprotein H, whose role in lipid metabolism is still poorly understood and whose levels increase in diabetes. Apolipoprotein H was isolated from human plasma and purified through a combination of affinity chromatography and continuous elution electrophoresis. The in vitro glycosylation was performed by incubating purified apolipoprotein H with high concentration of glucose. Our results indicate that the in vitro nonenzymatic glycosylation has no effect on the physical properties of apolipoprotein H, despite the fact that this apolipoprotein contains a high number of lysine residues. Since the in vitro concentration of glucose was far higher than the levels normally found in diabetic subjects, it is unlikely for apolipoprotein H to become glycosylated in diabetes.
