    Notes: Two intersecting storage rings (8 GeV, 1 A and 3.5 GeV, 2 A) have been proposed to be built at Cornell University to enhance both the production of B mesons and synchrotron radiation. Exceedingly high x-ray flux from 3-m long undulators will be the new feature of a B factory for the CHESS laboratory. The flux produced integrated over the central cone of radiation can be as much as an order of magnitude higher than from the third-generation storage rings (now under construction) operating at 0.1 A.

    Notes: A system of diffracting perfect crystals for the generation of variable, elliptically polarized x rays was tested at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source under the conditions of a standard undulator source. The phase retarding optical component was a 4-bounce, Ge(220) Bragg reflection channel-cut crystal. The full polarization state of the output beam, including the circular polarization purity P3, was determined using the multiple-beam Bragg diffraction technique. In addition to measuring the optics' efficiency, the ability to scan the system in energy, while frequently reversing the circular helicity, was demonstrated at the vicinity of the Fe K edge at 7.1 keV. The setup was applied to a circular magnetic x-ray dichroism measurement. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We show that the Stokes–Poincaré polarization parameters for an x-ray beam can be completely determined using the method of multiple-beam Bragg diffraction.     Notes: We present a simple method for complete determination of the x-ray polarization state, using just one Bragg reflection from a single-crystal analyzer. For the linear polarization components P1 and P2, we show that the usual method of using a 90° Bragg reflection can be extended to using any Bragg reflection with 2θ≠90°. For circular component P3, we use the intensity modulation profile in an azimuthal rotation caused by the phase-sensitive interference around a multiple-beam Bragg reflection. The combination of the two measurements allows a straightforward complete determination of x-ray polarization, including an unpolarized component, in a broad applicable energy range.

    Notes: A 3.3-cm period Nd-Fe-B hybrid undulator has been designed and successfully operated in the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR). This 2-m-long, 123-pole insertion device is a prototype of one of the undulators planned for the Advanced Photon Source. In dedicated operation, the undulator produced the expected brightness at 5.437 GeV with the fundamental x-ray energy ranging from 4.3 to 7.9 keV corresponding to a change in gap from 1.5 to 2.8 cm.

    Notes: The high-brilliance, insertion-device-based photon beams of the next generation of synchrotron sources (Argonne's APS and Grenoble's ESRF) will deliver large thermal loads (1–10 kW) to the first optical elements. Considering the problems that present synchrotron users are experiencing with beams from recently installed insertion devices, new and improved methods of cooling these first optical elements, particularly when they are diffraction crystals, are clearly needed. A series of finite element calculations were performed to test the efficiency of new cooling geometries and various cooling fluids. The best results were obtained with liquid Ga metal flowing in channels just below the surface of the crystal. Ga was selected because of its good thermal conductivity and thermal capacity, low melting point, high boiling point, low kinetic viscosity, and very low vapor pressure. Its very low vapor pressure, even at elevated temperatures, makes it especially attractive in UHV conditions. A series of experiments were conducted at CHESS in February of 1988 that compared liquid gallium-cooled silicon diffraction crystals with water-cooled crystals. A six-pole wiggler beam was used to perform these tests on three different Si crystals, two with new cooling geometries and the one presently in use. A special high-pressure electromagnetic induction pump, recently developed at Argonne, was used to circulate the liquid gallium through the silicon crystals. In all experiments, the specially cooled crystal was used as the first crystal in a two crystal monochromator. An infrared camera was used to monitor the thermal profiles and correlated them with rocking curve measurements. A second set of cooling experiments were conducted in June of 1988 that used the intense, highly collimated beam from the newly installed ANL/CHESS undulator. Tests were performed on two new Ga-cooled Si crystals and compared with the standard water-cooled Si crystal. One of the crystals had cooling channels at two levels in the crystal that allowed one to actively control the shape of the crystal surface. The second one had rectangular cooling channels located just beneath the diffraction surface. Both crystals showed major improvements over the water-cooled crystal.

    Notes: A 25-pole permanent magnet hybrid wiggler has been built at CHESS and installed on the CESR (Cornell Electron Storage Ring). This device has a magnetic period of 19.6 cm, a peak on-axis field of 1.2 T at the nominal operating gap of 4.0 cm, and a K parameter of 22. The wiggler has been designed to provide radiation for two new experimental stations with approximately four times the flux available from the present CHESS six-pole electromagnet wiggler. Under normal running conditions at 100 mA currents, the total power radiated should exceed 6 kW making this one of the highest flux x-ray sources below 1 A(ring) critical wavelength. In this paper an overview of the development of the wiggler is given, including the unique features in its design and construction as well as results of measurements obtained on its magnetic and spectral properties.

    Notes: When hard x-ray focusing optics require segmented bending, the focal spot can be minimized by matching segment size to the synchrotron source size and focal ratio. At modern sources this implies features etched or cut into silicon on the 100 μm scale. We describe our experience using photolithography and high aspect ratio reactive ion etching (RIE) to produce sagittal focusing crystals. The work was carried out at the Cornell Nanofabrication Facility. RIE has been of great utility for the manufacture of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) which contain features typically a few microns in size. We have learned that because of the very large dielectric constant of silicon, a number of important considerations must go into a successful design when features are scaled up for x-ray optics applications. Nevertheless, we have designed, built and tested x-ray optical devices produced using MEMS techniques, and in fact they are in regular use at CHESS. We describe our results from the point of view of mechanical robustness and focus quality, and offer general guidelines for future designers. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The dynamic response of tetragonal lysozyme crystals to dehydration has been characterized in situ using a combination of X-ray topography, high-resolution diffraction line-shape measurements and conventional crystallographic diffraction. For dehydration from 98% relative humidity (r.h.) to above 89%, mosaicity and diffraction resolution show little change and X-ray topographs remain featureless. Lattice constants decrease rapidly but the lattice-constant distribution within the crystal remains very narrow, indicating that water concentration gradients remain very small. Near 88% r.h., the c-axis lattice parameter decreases abruptly, the steady-state mosaicity and diffraction resolution degrade sharply and topographs develop extensive contrast. This transformation exhibits metastability and hysteresis. At fixed r.h. 〈 88% it is irreversible, but the original order can be almost completely restored by rehydration. These results suggest that this transformation is a first-order structural transition involving an abrupt loss of crystal water. The front between transformed and untransformed regions may propagate inward from the crystal surface and the resulting stresses along the front may degrade mosaicity. Differences in crystal size, shape and initial perfection may produce the observed variations in degradation timescale. Consequently, the success of more general post-growth treatments may often involve identifying procedures that either avoid lattice transitions, minimize disorder created during such transitions or maintain the lattice in an ordered metastable state.

    Notes: The effects of solution variations during growth on the perfection of tetragonal lysozyme crystals have been characterized using X-ray topography and high angular and wavevector resolution reciprocal-space scans. X-ray images of crystals grown under nearly uniform conditions show little contrast or evidence of defects, and mosaic widths of these crystals are comparable with those reported for microgravity-grown crystals. Images of crystals for which solution conditions (temperature, pH or salt concentration) are changed after an initial period of uniform growth can show extensive contrast, indicating the presence of disorder. The X-ray mosaic widths of these crystals can be significantly broadened, but their radial widths are at most very slightly broadened, indicating that image contrast is primarily due to mosaicity. Comparison of X-ray images with mosaic scans indicates that regions grown after the change in solution conditions have broader mosaicities and are more disordered; that regions grown immediately after the change tend to have broader mosaicities than subsequent growth regions; and that the pre-change growth region is largely unaffected by solution changes. The observed disorder may arise from solution change-related transient growth instabilities, from transient liquid–liquid phase separation that can occur during the change, and from post-change relaxation of the lattice constant of the pre-change growth regions. These results suggest that solution variations during growth, including those typical of macroseeding, vapor-diffusion growth and other widely used techniques, may be an important source of disorder in some protein crystals.
