    Notes: We have determined ab initio potential energy surfaces of the S0 and S1 states of dimethylnitrosamine, with particular care for the N–N bond dissociation pathway. The electronic correlation has been taken into account by a multireference perturbation method, CIPSI. Classical trajectories in the S1 surface have been run with statistically determined initial conditions. Computed lifetimes and orientation parameters for the recoil velocity and the NO fragment angular momentum are in agreement with experimental data. Large amplitude internal motions are of primary importance in determining such quantities.

    Notes: The role of frequency variation in the transition between two crossing diabatic electronic states originating in a conical intersection is studied. We have considered a minimal model with two vibrational degrees of freedom, a coupling mode, and a tuning mode, and performed computations varying the frequency of both in the initially unoccupied diabatic state. It is shown that neglecting this effect may result in a wrong estimate of the transition probability. Two simple rules for evaluating qualitatively such an effect are proposed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have carried out a study of the dynamics in a two-state, two-mode conical intersection with the aim of understanding the role played by the initial position of the wave packet and the slope of potential energy surfaces at the conical intersection point on the transition probability between the two diabatic states. Studying the dynamics for a single period of the tuning oscillator, we find two distinct rules that can be used for a qualitative prediction of the behavior of the transition probability after the first passage through the conical intersection and after a period (two passages). The first quantity is relevant for systems undergoing a rapid, irreversible decay and the second one for understanding in what kinds of conditions one has to expect a periodic fluorescence spectrum. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We investigate the dynamics around a two-state conical intersection in a polyatomic molecule. The simplified model considered is an extension of that proposed and tested previously for the case of one active (coupling) mode and one passive mode. Here we study a multidimensional conical intersection built adding many other passive modes, which globally share a small fraction (up to 20%) of the total vibrational energy. The model simply consists in treating the coupling mode quantum mechanically, while the others are described as classical oscillators running unperturbed trajectories on the initial diabatic surface. The computed adiabatic transition probabilities show, in some conditions, a marked effect of the extra passive modes, which can be explained in terms of the time spent by the classical trajectories in the region where the diabatic coupling is at its maximum. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We study the quantum dynamics of a two-electronic state model system with a conical intersection involving two vibrational degrees of freedom, x and y. The two diabatic surfaces are displaced only along x, while the interstate coupling is linear in y and contains Gaussian damping factors along x and y. The role of the initial momentum and of the difference of the slopes at the conical intersection is discussed. In particular, the analysis of the numerical results shows that the diabatic transition at the conical intersection is accompanied mainly by a massive flow of vibrational quanta from the x to the y oscillator of the same electronic state. Furthermore, we propose a simplified time-dependent monodimensional model in which the x oscillator is assumed to move as an independent classical oscillator, while the y oscillator is described quantum-mechanically. Despite the crude approximations involved, this simplified model reproduces quite well the exact results for the transition probabilities at the first passage through the conical intersection and candidates itself as a useful tool for treating multidimensional systems with low computational effort. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Satellite mounted Synthetic Aperture Radars (SAR) provide informationof the amplitude of the backscatterer its phase. This corresponds to the totaltravel time (source receiver and back), plus the phase of the scatterer itself.SAR interferometry yields the image of the differences of the phases takenin two successive passes. Or in the same pass if two receivers are availableon board; these images give a good digital elevation model of the terrain,with a vertical resolution that could be in the meter range. Millimetric motionof large areas of the terrain or of corner reflectors can also be measured withgood reliability; the system then measures subsidence, co-seismic motions andsmall motions of buildings and constructions. The coherence of t e interferometric pair, i.e., the permanence of the scattering characteristics of the terrain from one pass to the next combined with the more usual backscatterer amplitude, leads to high quality image segmentation. The possibilities and the limits of this technique are summarized.

The quantitative and qualitative assessment of ES is as a tool to address forest management planning on a local scale. Forest landscape management planning is the most suitable level for integrating social needs and demands in the enhancement of different forest ES. Some regions in Italy have developed forest landscape management plans taking into account the social preferences for the different ES. In this paper, we refer to five case studies in three pilot areas in Italy. A survey collected and analyzed the opinions and preferences, from 362 stakeholders, for ten ES included in three categories (provisioning, regulating and cultural services). The main aim of this study is to understand what type of variables (study area, the groups of interest and socio-demographic characteristics of respondents) most influence stakeholder preferences for ES. The results show that for the sample of stakeholders involved in the survey, the most important ES category is regulating services followed by cultural services. In addition, the results show that the group of stakeholders’ interest is the most important variable influencing their preferences for ES.
