Notes: Growth of the submerged weed Potamogeton pectinatus L. is a major problem in the irrigation channels located in the Lower Valley of the Colorado River (39°10′–39°55′S; 62°05′–63°55′W) in Argentina. Previous studies indicate that weed control with acrolein is effective in reducing submerged plant biomass. In this study, we evaluated the influence of some variables affecting acrolein and its dissipation in water. Three main parameters, acrolein dosage, the height of the plants and the velocity of water contributed to 80% of the reduction of the submerged weed biomass. Water flow and concentration of the chemical explained 68% of the factors influencing the dissipation of the herbicide. Water velocity, electrical conductivity, pH and the duration of application have a secondary effect in the dissipation process. The constant rate of dissipation (K) was 0.235 L h−1 (SD ±0.125), implying that the chemical will disappear from the system in 〈24 h. As a practical guideline for the control of mature, dense stands of P. pectinatus within the irrigation system under study, the following conditions are advisable: flow volumes of 500 L s−1 or higher, water velocity of 0.42 m s−1 or more and c. 6.5 mg L−1 concentration of acrolein for at least a 11-h period.

Notes: Summary A field survey and two field experiments were carried out to compare the performance of rhizomes and stolons of Cynodon dactylon, in terms of their sprouting efficiency and the dynamics and growth characteristics of the established ramets. The survey examined the relationships between morphological characteristics of above- and below-ground structures of ramets naturally established from both types of fragments in a crop field. The first experiment compared the emergence and early growth of ramets from standardized stolon and rhizome fragments, grown under uniform field conditions without competition. It also comparatively analysed the predictive value of the maximum stolon length on dry matter partitioning. The second experiment investigated fragment type × size interactions on the establishment, dry matter accumulation and partitioning in stolon- and rhizome-originated ramets. Results showed that under normal cropping conditions, more ramets can be originated from rhizome than from equivalent stolon fragments. Higher sprouting efficiency and dry matter partitioning to aerial structures, and a higher size dependence of the effective ramet recruitment were observed for stolon than for rhizome fragments. The observed differences between fragment type are dicussed in relation to their implications for predictions of weed emergence, and the efficacy of control strategies used under different cropping tillage systems.

Notes: Objective and background:   Relatively little is known about the epidemiology of necrotizing ulcerative gingival lesions (NUG) in adolescent populations. Most studies have comprised special target groups, such as military recruits, HIV patients, or severely malnourished subjects. Methods:  A multistage random cluster sampling scheme was used to obtain a sample of 9203 students aged 12–21 years from 98 of a total of 618 high schools in Santiago, Chile. Students were given a clinical oral examination and questionnaire information was obtained on smoking and oral hygiene habits, dental attendance patterns, and diabetic status. The diagnostic criteria for NUG were the presence of necrosis and ulceration of at least one interproximal papillae. Results:  The estimated prevalence of NUG was 6.7% (95% CI = [6.2; 7.3]). A multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that last seeing a dentist more than 1 year ago (OR = 1.60), or never (OR = 1.93), and reporting diabetes (OR = 2.12) showed a significant positive association with the presence of NUG; whereas neither gender nor smoking were important predictors. Students aged 18-21 years were more, albeit statistically insignificantly, likely to have NUG than were younger students (OR = 1.40).Conclusions:  Our observation that reporting to be diabetic was positively associated with the presence of NUG is interesting, as diabetes has never been addressed as a possible risk factor. As the association between diabetes and periodontitis in adults is thought to relate to impaired function of neutrophils, microangiopathy, and impaired wound healing this finding suggests a significant role of the host response also for the occurrence of NUG.

Notes: Abstract  Fire and grazing are important factors in the regulation of the grassland structure of the Flooding Pampa (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina dominated by Paspalum quadrifarium plants (henceforth ‘pajonal’)). Winter burning of pajonal is a practice that increases P. quadrifarium growth and its nutritious value for cattle. The objective of this work was to determine the responses of different demographic variables of P. quadrifarium growing in a grassland managed with different fire frequencies. The work was carried out in a pajonal situated in San Ignacio (Ayacucho county, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina). The treatments were: high fire frequency (0.8 fires per year) and low fire frequency (0.4 fires per year). The population of P. quadrifarium was affected by fire frequency. Biomass, number of tillers, and the relative production of tillers per plant did not change with fire frequency. Plant height was negatively affected by fire frequency. Whereas no plant mortality was observed in high fire frequency, 30% of the mature plants died at the end of the experiment in low fire frequency. In both treatments, plant mortality was size-dependent and juvenile plants were more affected than mature ones. Burning had an immediate negative effect on mature and juvenile plants in terms of fecundity, survival of tillers and basal cover. Tiller survival and fecundity were significantly lower in burned plants than in unburned ones. In the high fire frequency treatment the number of ramets and/or genets and basal cover were greater than in the low fire frequency treatment.

Notes: Abstract We describe a case of pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PE) in a child with distinctive skin lesions without other symtoms. Renal ultrasonography showed a characteristic pattern of dotted increased echogenicity in the corticome-dullary junction. Pancreas and spleen had similar echographic findings. We point out the importance of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of this rare disorder.

Notes: Summary We performed Southern-blot analysis of the p 53 gene in 41 consecutive patients with typical chronic myelocytic leukemia (CML). In two of them, we were able to study cells during both the chronic and the accelerated phases. Only one of the 29 chronic-phase samples had rearrangement of the p 53 gene, whereas three of the nine accelerated-phase samples and one of the five patients in blast crisis exhibited rearrangements. Gene deletion was observed in two patients, one in accelerated phase and the other in blast crisis. One patient with a nonrearranged p 53 gene in chronic phase showed rearrangement after progression to the accelerated phase. On the other hand, one patient in accelerated phase exhibited rearrangements which disappeared after reversion to chronic phase with successful treatment. Our findings support the opinion that alterations of the p 53 gene may play an important role in CML evolution.

Notes: Abstract With the use of the derivatograph it is possible to find similarities and differences between Plexauras and Plexaurellas, taking into account not only the moisture and ash content, but also the weight losses associated with the different thermal effects. On this basis thermal analysis is proposed for the rapid characterization of gorgonia.

Notes: Abstract Plants and seedlings of Potamogeton pectinatus were obtained from tubers grown under laboratory conditions. Four plants (mean total length: 14.3 m) and two seedlings (mean height: 10.9 cm) were placed in each of twenty 1001 aquaria illuminated with fluorescent lighting. A 5 cm-thick layer of muddy sediment was then put in each aquarium together with two size-matched fish (mean size classes: 6.8, 14.1 and 23.0 g) of the species Cyprinus carpio. After four weeks, the total length of the plants in the control and small fish aquaria had increased by 71% and 3% respectively, whereas plant total length in the aquaria with medium and large fish had diminished by 33% and 76%, respectively. Few seedlings survived in the presence of the fish. The reduction in plant growth was associated with an increase in water turbidity in all treatments as a result of the benthic feeding habit of C. carpio, and of direct herbivory action in the case of medium- and large-sized fish.
