    Notes: High quality ZnO thin films have been grown on a Si(100) substrate by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition using a zinc organic source [Zn(C2H5)2] and carbon dioxide (CO2) gas mixtures at the low temperature of 180 °C. The dependence of ZnO thin film quality on the gas flow rate ratio of Zn(C2H5)2 to CO2 (GFRRZC) is studied by using x-ray diffraction (XRD), optical absorption (OA) spectra, and cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra. High quality ZnO thin films with a c-axis-oriented wurtzite structure are obtained when the GFRRZC is 0.33. XRD shows that the full width at half maximum of (0002) ZnO located at 34.42° is about 0.2°. At room temperature, a pronounced free exciton absorption peak around 365 nm is clearly observed. Also, a strong free exciton emission without deep level defect emission is observed around 385 nm, and its temperature dependence is studied from the photoluminescence spectra. These observations indicate the formation of a high quality ZnO film. Additionally, nitridation of the Si surface caused by releasing NH3 plasma into the deposition chamber is an effective way to improve film quality. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The irreversibility lines of Pr-doped Br2Sr2Ca1−xPrxCu2Oy single crystals have been studied systematically. It was found that for the Pr-doped samples as compared with the undoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy the effective superconducting area shrinks, the irreversibility line Birr decreases, and the anisotropic parameter γ increases strongly due to Pr doping. It is evident that the substitution of Pr for Ca in the system effectively reduces the hole concentration on CuO2 layers to the underdoped state and destroys the Josephson coupling of the two superconducting regions of adjacent CuO2 layers. The vortex depinning is responsible for the irreversibility and the displacement value for vortex depinning is similar to that for vortex lattice melting, but with different physical meaning. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: La0.67Ca0.33Mn1−xCuxO3 (x=0 and 0.15) epitaxial thin films were grown on the (100) LaAlO3 substrates, and the temperature dependence of their resistivity was measured in magnetic fields up to 12 T by a four-probe technique. We found that the competition between the ferromagnetic metallic (FM) and paramagnetic insulating (PI) phases plays an important role in the observed colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effect. Based on a scenario that the doped manganites approximately consist of phase-separated FM and PI regions, a simple phenomenological model was proposed to describe the CMR effect. Using this model, we calculated the resistivity as functions of temperature and magnetic field. The model not only qualitatively accounts for some main features related to the CMR effect, but also quantitatively agrees with the experimental observations. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Raman scattering studies were performed on ZnSe–ZnS strained-layer superlattices with different strains. In the optical phonon regime, the Raman spectra of the ZnSe–ZnS superlattices with a superlattice axis along [001] show optical phonons confined in the ZnSe well and ZnS barrier layers, and display a two-mode behavior corresponding to ZnSe-like and ZnS-like modes. We report the experimental results, by means of Raman scattering of confined longitudinal optical phonons in ZnSe–ZnS strained-layer superlattices. The Raman frequency shift dependence on the layer thickness, superlattice period, and interface strain is presented and discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: At 77 K, stimulated emission from n=1 light-hole excitons in a ZnSe-Zn0.8Cd0.2Se superlattice is observed and the oscillation mode properties of n=1 light-hole and heavy-hole excitons are analyzed. It is noticed that the ZnSe-Zn0.8Cd0.2Se superlattice with the shorter Fabry–Pérot cavity length d has the larger threshold excitation. The threshold of each mode has been determined using its time delay curve. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Brillouin scattering studies were performed on ZnSe-ZnSe1−xSx strained-layer superlattices with the composition x∼0.2. We have observed scattering from longitudinal guided modes (LGM) whose velocities are determined primarily by the C11 elastic constant. From the measured velocity of the first-order LGM of the quasitransverse acoustic mode and of the quasilongitudinal acoustic mode, the C11 and C44 elastic constants in ZnSe-ZnSe1−xSx superlattice film have been observed. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Longitudinal acoustic and optical phonon modes of a ZnSe/ZnSxSe1−x (x(approximately-equal-to)0.20) lattice-mismatched superlattice, prepared with atmospheric metal organic chemical vapor deposition method, have been investigated by light scattering measurements. Despite a lattice mismatch as large as 1% between the alternating layers, the measured longitudinal elastic constants are in agreement with the calculated values of an unstrained effective medium model. Furthermore, a correlative study was made by fitting the spectra to a spatial correlation model, which reproduces line shapes of the observed confined longitudinal-optical modes without incorporating the strain effects. The results demonstrate that a combination of Brillouin and Raman spectroscopy provides a good method to determine accurately the elastic constants and strain information of the lattice-mismatched superlattices and heterostructures.

    Notes: Blue electroluminescence is reported from CaS:TmF3 thin films prepared by radio frequency magnetron sputtering method. The dependences of brightness on substrate temperature, concentration of TmF3, and the applied voltage were investigated on alternating current thin-film electroluminescent devices. The obtained maximum brightness was above the level of ZnS:TmF3 devices. The equivalent average energy of the excited electrons contributed to the electroluminescence in CaS:TmF3 alternating current thin-film electroluminescent devices and was estimated at around 4.23 eV by comparing the ratio of infrared to blue peak in electroluminescent spectra with that in photoluminescent spectra excited by different photon energy. The excitation processes of electroluminescence in CaS:TmF3 thin films were assumed to be energy transfers from the conduction band edge to Tm3+ centers. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Metal-doped diamond-like carbon films were produced for the purpose of an electrochemical nanoelectrode. In this study we use Z-contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy to directly observe metal cluster formation and distributions within the chromium-doped carbon films. At low doping (∼6 at. % Cr), Cr is uniformly distributed within the C matrix; at high doping (∼12 at. % Cr), Cr-rich clusters are formed. Analyzing electron energy loss spectroscopy Cr L2,3 white line ratios, we find that the Cr tends to be metallic-like when it is uniformly distributed in the C matrix and carbide-like in the Cr-rich clusters. The carbon is more diamond-like at low doping and more graphite/carbide-like at high doping according to the sp2/sp3 electron percentage measurements. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The synthesis of single-wall carbon nanotubes by Nd:YAG laser vaporization of a graphite/(Ni, Co) target is investigated by laser-induced luminescence imaging and spectroscopy of Co atoms, C2 and C3 molecules, and clusters at 1000 °C in flowing 500 Torr Ar. These laser-induced emission images under typical synthesis conditions show that the plume of vaporized material is segregated and confined within a vortex ring which maintains a ∼1 cm3 volume for several seconds. Using time-resolved spectroscopy and spectroscopic imaging, the time for conversion of atomic and molecular species to clusters was measured for both carbon (200 μs) and cobalt (2 ms). This rapid conversion of carbon to nanoparticles, combined with transmission electron microscopy analysis of the collected deposits, indicate that nanotube growth occurs over several seconds in a plume of mixed nanoparticles. By adjusting the time spent by the plume within the high-temperature zone using these in situ diagnostics, single-walled nanotubes of controlled length were grown at an estimated rate of 0.2 μm/s. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
