    Notes: Summary In spite of considerable effort there is still serious disagreement in the literature about the question of whether epitopes of ribosomal protein S4 are accessible for antibody binding on the intact small ribosomal subunit. We have attempted to resolve this issue using three independent approaches: (i) a re-investigation of the exposure and the location of epitopes of ribosomal protein S4 on the surface of the 30S subunit and 30S core particles of the E. coli ribosome, including rigorous controls of antibody specificity, (ii) a similar investigation of protein S4 from Bacillus stearothermophilus and (iii) the labelling of residue Cys-31 of E. coli S4 with a fluorescein derivative the accessibility of which towards a fluorescein-specific antibody was demonstrated directly by fluorimetry. In each of the three cases the antigen (E. coli S4, B. stearothermophilus S4 or fluorescein) was found to reside on the small lobe.

    Description / Table of Contents: Syntheses of Aromatic Erythrina Alkaloids, XXIII. 1,7-Cyclo-cis-erythrinanesThe 1,7-cyclo-cis-erythrinane derivative 17 is formed by heating the bromo compound 13 with potassium hydroxide in diethylene glycol to 180°C. Hydrolysis of 17 yields the ketone 18 which, by reactions of the carbonyl group, is transformed into the cyclic compounds 19 - 21 and 27 - 33. The cyclopropane ring is easily cleaved by reduction to give the unsaturated lactam 10 or the saturated lactam 1. The 1,7-cyclo-cis-erythrinane structures 37 and 38 can be synthesized by way of the cyclic olefin 35.
    Notes: Durch Erhitzen der Bromverbindung 13 mit Kaliumhydroxid in Diethylenglycol auf 180°C entsteht das 1,7-Cyclo-cis-erythrinan-Derivat 17. Nach Hydrolyse zum Keton 18 erhält man durch Umwandlung der Ketogruppe die Cycloverbindungen 19 - 21 und 27 - 33. Reduzierende Bedingungen spalten den Cyclopropanring sehr leicht auf unter Bildung des Olefinlactams 10 oder des gesättigten Lactams 1. Über das Cycloolefin 35 gelingt die Darstellung von 37 und der zugehörigen Base 38 mit dem Grundgerüst der 1,7-Cyclo-cis-erythrinane.

    Description / Table of Contents: A Reversible Rearrangement of the trans-Erythrinane Ring System, III. Degradation of the 1(6→7)abeo-trans-Erythrinane Skeleton.Fragmentation of the acetate-mesylate 4 with sodium methoxide leads to the β-lactamaldehyde 9, which is degraded to the β-lactam 22 via the carboxylic acid 21. The constitution of 9 is determined with the aid of deuteration and confirmed by X-ray analysis. The spirodienones 24 and 25 with C- and B-nor-erythrinane skeleton are additional compounds of the degradation path. The B-nor-cis-erythrinane base 30 is prepared by reduction of 22 to 26, followed by cyclodehydration.
    Notes: Durch Fragmentierung des Acetat-mesylats 4 mit Natriummethylat entsteht der β-Lactamaldehyd 9, der sich über die Carbonsäure 21 zum β-Lactam 22 abbauen läßt. Die Konstitution von 9 wird mit Hilfe deuterierter Verbindungen ermittelt und durch eine Röntgenstrukturanalyse bewiesen. Folgeprodukte des Abbaus sind die Spirodienone 24 und 25 mit C- und B-Nor-erythrinan-Gerüst. Durch Reduktion von 22 zu 26 und Cyclodehydratisierung wird die B-Nor-cis-erythrinan-Base 30 gewonnen.

Crystal and Molecular Structure of an α,β-Annelated Benzene OxideThe benzene oxide structure of the crystalline epoxybenzocycloheptene derivative 1a is established by X-ray analysis. 1a has a nearly planar six-membered ring system; further structural parameters are discussed. Also in solution 1a predominates in the valence tautomeric equilibrium 1a ⇌ 2a. In contrast, an α,β-annelated aliphatic six-membered ring causes a remarkable preference of oxepines 2b and 2c. Possible explanations are discussed.
    Notes: Die Röntgenstrukturanalyse des Epoxybenzocyclohepten-Derivales 1a zeigt, daß die Verbindung im Kristall als Benzoloxid mit nahezu ebenem Sechsring vorliegt. Weitere Strukturparameter des relativ einfachen Arenoxids 1a werden diskutiert. Das Valenztautomeriegleichgewicht 1a ⇌ 2a liegt auch in Lösung weitgehend auf der Seite von 1a. Im Unterschied dazu führt ein α,β-aneliierter Sechsring zu einer deutlichen Bevorzugung der Oxepine 2b und 2c. Mögliche Ursachen hierfür werden diskutiert.
