Summary In step-sections of all cartilaginous rings of 20 human tracheae the following were measured or calculated: the resistance factor, the cross-sectional area of the cartilage, the relationship between the surface of the cartilage to its volume, the number of cells per unit volume, and the area or volume of the cells. With advancing age the cartilaginous rings adapt to the increased mechanical stress by a growth process. The resistance factor of the cartilage thus becomes increased. On the other hand, the growth results in poorer nutrition for the cartilage. This may be inferred from the enlargment of the diameter of the elliptical cross-section of the cartilage and from the volume/surface ratio. The changes of these values point to poorer conditions of diffusion into the cartilage with advancing age. The results of this are: a decrease in the cell number per unit volume, especially of the center of the cartilage, and a degeneration of the intercellular substance (albuminous, granular degeneration, cyst formation), which eventually leads to the formation of bone within the cartilage.
Notes:
