Summary Polymethylmethacrylate was irradiated with X-rays at absorbed dose rates between 3.8 × 103 and 7.1 × 105 J.g−1. h−1. The 100 eV-yield for main-chain scission was determined as G(S)X-ray= 0.33. It is independent of the absorbed dose rate. The difference between G(S)X-ray and G(S)γ-ray(G(S)γ-ray= 1.5 ± 0.2) is attributed to a true linear energy transfer (LET) effect.
