Notes:
Summary Sodium (distribution) space and sucrose space of liver and muscle were measured in vivo in rats following the application of cortisone and dexamethasone. After application of cortisone sucrose, which normally distributes in the extracellular space, penetrates into liver and muscle cells. Following application of dexamethasone we only found penetration of sucrose into liver cells. In vitro experiments with intact rat diaphragm and liver slices reveal no penetration of sucrose into the cells. Electron-microscopic examinations, where an increase of “smooth endoplasmatic reticulum” was found upon treatment with cortisone and dexamethasone, lead to the conclusion that the increase of sucrose space is effected by the intake of sucrose into the “smooth endoplasmatic reticulum”.
