Notes: Abstract The melt-texture growth (MTG) method has been shown to be effective in fabricating high-T csuperconducting bulk samples with highly oriented layers of single crystals. The critical current densityJ cof the typical samples are enhanced significantly. Furthermore, making use of the nonzero spatial temperature gradient at certain locations of a common tube furnace, we fabricated Y-123 bulk samples with various dopants allowingJ cup to ≈3.0×104 A cm−2 in our recent investigations. We followed up our project by analyzing the relations among the crucial parameters involved in the modified version of the MTG process. These parameters include the temperature gradient, the time rate of change of temperature, the “growth front” of the crystal, etc. Our study indicates that some of the empty space regions that appear between layers are only shallow “gap lines.” True layers of single crystals do exist, and we present an explanation for the growth of crystal layers along special directions as observed.

Notes: Abstract. The role of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) in pollen germination was investigated in several plant species. It was found that ACC stimulated in vitro pollen germination in all five species of plants tested. EGTA and phenothiazine inhibited the increase in the germination rate induced by ACC. Free Ca2+ levels in the cytosol ([Ca2+]cyt) in ungerminated and germinated pollen were 136 and 287 nm, respectively. Adding 0.25 mm ACC to the germination medium increased the [Ca2+]cyt in germinated pollen up to 450 nm. When pollen was treated with both 0.25 mm ACC and 3.6 μm inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate, the [Ca2+]cyt increased to 850 nm, and pollen germination was also stimulated. In the presence of Li+, an inhibitor of inositol monophosphatase, the [Ca2+]cyt was reduced to 155 nm, and the ACC-stimulated pollen germination was inhibited. The data provided evidence for the involvement of Ca2+ as a messenger in the stimulative effect of ACC on pollen germination.

Notes: Abstract We report on the successful fabrication of bulk samples satisfying the nominal composition YBa2Cu3−x Te x O7−δ and containing highly single-crystal-like texture. While this type of crystal growing process is not new, our process requires only the existence of spatial temperature gradient in some parts of the common tube furnace. The samples with tellurium were found to be much more stable and better superconductors than the Y-123 specimen. Large layer textures with cross-section ∼50×500μm2 were observed to grow inside the usual bulk sample. The critical currents were measured by the d.c. magnetization method and found to be easily greater than 6000 A cm−2 for the samples with Te.

Notes: Abstract We report a simple and safe technology where rather pure Hg-1201 phase superconducting bulk samples can be fabricated. The pellet was heated at about 700°C for only 30 min in open air under atmospheric pressure. We have found that a dehydration process (heating for 20 h at 250°C) is a crucial procedure for success in forming the Hg-1201 phase.
