Description: Five Andean countries (Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela) and four European countries (Italy, Spain, Holland, Germany) cooperated in the PILOTO program ("Test area for earthquake monitoring and seismic hazard assessment"), launched under GSHAP and sponsored by the European Union (Ct.94-0103) to produce a unified SHA for the Andean region. Activities included the integration of national earthquake catalogues and source zonings in common regional databases and joint technical workshops for the assessment of the regional hazard, expressed in terms of expected peak ground acceleration with 10% exceedance probability in 50 years.

Notes: The dynamic finite-element method allows frequency-dependent reflection and transmission coefficients to be computed for Love waves scattered by two-dimensional inhomogeneities in coal seams.Clean faults of zero hade angle show a throw-dependent cross-over frequency in reflection spectra, and throw-dependent conversion from fundamental to first higher mode energy in transmission spectra. Oblique faults show mode conversion in reflection spectra which is relatable to the fault hade angle by simple Huygens-theory models. Thin fracture zones or dykes normal to the seam show a reflection maximum when thickness of the zone is of order one quarter of the seam wave wavelength.Published field data from two known faults and a dyke are compared with the modeling results and support the belief that broad-band seam-wave data are capable of characterizing a seam discontinuity (throw, hade angle, dyke thickness) as well as locating it. Development of such procedures will require extensions to existing field practice and processing. This research was funded in part by the National Energy Research Development and Demonstration Council of Australia. Notes: We report "exact'' quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the potential energy surface for the reaction H+H2→H2+H. The method used is free of systematic error. The statistical or sampling error was reduced to ±0.10 kcal/mol for several hundred points distributed across the surface, to ±0.02 kcal/mol for the minimum energy approach of H to H2, to ±0.02 kcal/mol near the saddle point, and to ±0.01 kcal/mol at the saddle point. The upper and lower surfaces in the region of the Jahn–Teller cusp were determined with a statistical error of ±0.2 kcal/mol.

Description: A prototype shipboard filter skid (p1SFS) was designed and built to facilitate shipboard collection and concentration of ≥50 µm planktonic organisms from large volumes of water. The p1SFS consisted of two stainless steel filter housings, each containing a filter bag, arranged in parallel. Validation of the device examined the particle retention efficiency of filter bags (using inert polystyrene microbeads), the potential toxicity of filter skid materials and the capture efficiency of plankton collected with a filter skid versus a plankton net at two sample volumes (5 and 10 m 3 ). Microbead recovery in filter bags was 〉89 and 100% for microbeads of 50 and 150 µm diameters, respectively. Exposure to the sealant used to close the filter bags' seams or stainless steel did not lead to mortality of two model zooplankton species. Overall, the concentration of ≥50 µm plankton in the p1SFS relative to concentrations in the plankton net (i.e. the capture efficiency, CE) was 108 ± 66% (mean ± 1 SD, n = 6). The p1SFS CE was higher in experiments with 5 m 3 sample volume (147 ± 74%; n = 3) relative to experiments with a 10 m 3 sample volume (69 ± 28%, n = 3), although the difference in CE between the sample volumes was not significant. Consequently, these experiments suggest this or similarly validated filter skids are appropriate for in-line sampling of plankton from relatively large volumes of water.
