Notes: Fifty-eight patients scheduled for elective thoracotomy were randomly allocated to receive fentanyl by either the thoracic or the lumbar epidural route for postoperative analgesia. The infusion rate was adjusted to optimise analgesia. Dose adjustment, pain assessment and the incidence of side effects were monitored by a blinded observer at set times over the 24 hour study period. Similar pain scores were obtained in both groups at all assessment times. In addition, there was no significant difference in dose requirements or incidence of side effects between the two groups. There appears little justification for the use of the generally less familiar, and potentially more dangerous, thoracic approach when fentanyl alone is infused into the epidural space following thoracotomy.

Notes: A clone containing the gene ifngr2 for the second chain (IFN-γR2) of the mouse interferon γ receptor complex was isolated from a cosmid library made of 129/Sv mouse genomic DNA. Sequence analysis revealed that the second chain is encoded by 7 exons. The complete gene spans about 17 kb of the genomic DNA. In the 5′-flanking region several transcription initiation sites between 27 and 136 nucleotides upstream from the translation initiation codon were mapped. This region has a high GC content, but no TATA or CAAT box. Potential binding sites were found for transcription factors Sp1, AP-2, NF1, EGR and NFκB. Promoter activity was assayed with a series of constructs with firefly luciferase as a reporter gene, under the control of the promoter fragments of various lengths. This region showed promoter activity in transiently transfected Chinese hamster ovary cells.

Notes: The variety of life-history patterns exhibited by the five species of wrasse common in Northern Europe are reviewed. The two larger wrasse species, the ballan, Labrus bergylta Ascanius, and cuckoo, Labrus mixtus (L.), are exploited through sport angling. The three smaller species, the corkwing, Symphodus (Crenilabrus) melops (L.), rock cook, Centrolabrus exoletus (L.) and goldsinny, Ctenolabrus rupestris (L.), are being exploited by a new fishery for use as parasite cleaners of farmed salmon. The nature of salmon farming limits the wrasse fishery to a minimum size, restricted areas and the warmer months of the year. The fishery may be expected to alter population structure through selective removal of larger fish. Removal of dominant territorial males may affect social structures and removal of nest-guarding males would reduce egg survival. Quantitative models incorporating stock size and fishery requirements are now required.
