    Description: The origin of bimodal (mafic–felsic) rock suites is a fundamental question in volcanology. Here we use major and trace elements, high-resolution Sr, Nd and Pb isotope analyses, experimental petrology and thermodynamic modelling to investigate bimodal magmatism at the iconic Carlingford Igneous Centre, Ireland. We show that early microgranites are the result of extensive assimilation of trace element-enriched partial melts of local metasiltstones into mafic parent magmas. Melting experiments reveal the crust is very fusible, but thermodynamic modelling indicates repeated heating events rapidly lower its melt-production capacity. Granite generation ceased once enriched partial melts could no longer form and subsequent magmatism incorporated less fertile restite compositions only, producing mafic intrusions and a pronounced compositional gap. Considering the frequency of bimodal magma suites in the North Atlantic Igneous Province, and the ubiquity of suitable crustal compositions, we propose ‘progressively inhibited crustal assimilation’ (PICA) as a major cause of bimodality in continental volcanism.

    Description: Dissolution rates of small forsterite spheres in superheated melts of basalt, andesite and rhyolite composition have been measured at 1300°C, atmospheric pressure. The rate is constant (83 µm hr−1) in the basalt, regardless of run duration. In the andesite the initial dissolution rate is 200µm hr−1, followed by a decrease to a constant value of 16µmhr−1 in 2–3 hours. Dissolution rate in the rhyolite decreases from an initial value of 1.7 to 〈0.1 µmhr−1 over 280 hours and never reaches a constant rate. Once the rate of dissolution has become constant, the film of contaminated melt that forms in melt about a crystal does not thicken with time, indicating attainment of a steady-state condition. Steady state is attributed to natural convection arising from the difference in density between the film of contaminated melt surrounding a crystal and that beyond. The density difference is approximately 2% of the density of the rock melt.

    Description: Using Pb isotope ratios we compare crustal contamination of primitive to evolved magmas from the Ardnamurchan and nearby Rum Igneous Centres, located on different crustal provinces in the British Tertiary Igneous Province (BTIP). The results confirm that compositional variations of parental cone-sheet magmas in Ardnamurchan can be explained by assimilation of granulite facies Lewisian gneiss at moderate crustal levels and subsequent contamination of evolved magmas with Moine schist metasediments within the uppermost crust during fractional crystallization. In contrast, samples from the Rum Centre have an uncontaminated mantle signature for the basaltic end-member, whereas the evolved rocks show Pb isotope evidence of contamination by Lewisian amphibolite facies rocks. Rum is separated from Ardnamurchan by a major thrust. The absence of a Moine-type isotopic influence in the Rum rocks supports an earlier interpretation, based on field evidence, that these overthrust rocks were eroded from Rum prior to the Palaeocene magmatic activity.
