    Notes: Abstract The species richness of sessile organisms on settlement panels on a coral reef was measured by the slope of a regression of loge number of species against loge area of sample. At a well illuminated site where panels were colonised by algae, the species richness of algae was 19% smaller on surfaces grazed by fishes than on protected surfaces. At a second site in a cave, the species richness of animals on grazed surfaces was 20% greater than on protected surfaces. These results are discussed in the light of differences between the sites. The contrasting effects of predation at the two sites are probably the result of more selective predation at the cave site than at the other site.

    Notes: Abstract We reviewed the results of 68 consecutive Fontan procedures from 1978 to 1993 to determine the frequency of late central neurologic complications of the Fontan procedure in patients living at a mean altitude of 4500 feet. Two surviving patients had transient neurologic symptoms or signs with no corresponding evidence of brain injury by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), whereas six surviving patients had strokes defined by sustained neurologic symptoms or signs with areas of brain injury identified by MRI [8.8% (6.0–13.0%; 70% confidence limits)]. Collectively, patients with neurologic symptoms had normal hemoglobin values, platelet counts, partial thromboplastin times, and prothrombin times at the onset of clinical neurologic findings. Two patients were taking antiplatelet agents, and one patient was taking warfarin. One of the patient's with transient neurologic findings and all of the stroke patients had residual right-to-left shunts. Thus strokes were not uncommon in our patients after the Fontan procedure. Brain injury may result. from thromboembolic events associated with residual right-to-left shunts, but our total number of asymptomatic patients with a residual shunt or brain abnormalities by MRI is not known.

    Notes: Summary In environments where frequent disturbances interrupt the successional process there will usually be many patches of habitat at intermediate stages of succession. It is then relevant to consider the factors which control local diversity during succession. In offshore kelp forests across the whole Southern Californian Bight settlement panels were rapidly colonised by two species of cyclostome bryozoans (Tubulipora tuba and T. pacifica); but cheilostome bryozoans eventually became dominant during succession because they were able to grow over Tubulipora spp. When abundant, Tubulipora spp. were apparently able to reduce the number of colonies, and hence the number of species, of cheilostome bryozoans settling on the panels. Thus the rapid colonisers may delay the process of succession and reduce the diversity of bryozoans during succession. In field and laboratory experiments we found that the asteroid Patiria miniata preys on Tubulipora spp. but not on cheilostome bryozoans. The predator speeds up the successional process and increases bryozoan diversity by reducing the cover of Tubulipora spp. Other ways in which predators may influence diversity during succession are discussed. The effect of predation may depend on the abundance of the prey and the mechanism of succession.

    Description: Background As screening methods for colorectal cancer (CRC) are limited by uptake and adherence, further options are sought. A blood test might increase both, but none has yet been tested in a screening setting. Objective We prospectively assessed the accuracy of circulating methylated SEPT9 DNA (mSEPT9) for detecting CRC in a screening population. Design Asymptomatic individuals ≥50 years old scheduled for screening colonoscopy at 32 US and German clinics voluntarily gave blood plasma samples before colon preparation. Using a commercially available assay, three independent blinded laboratories assayed plasma DNA of all CRC cases and a stratified random sample of other subjects in duplicate real time PCRs. The primary outcomes measures were standardised for overall sensitivity and specificity estimates. Results 7941 men (45%) and women (55%), mean age 60 years, enrolled. Results from 53 CRC cases and from 1457 subjects without CRC yielded a standardised sensitivity of 48.2% (95% CI 32.4% to 63.6%; crude rate 50.9%); for CRC stages I–IV, values were 35.0%, 63.0%, 46.0% and 77.4%, respectively. Specificity was 91.5% (95% CI 89.7% to 93.1%; crude rate 91.4%). Sensitivity for advanced adenomas was low (11.2%). Conclusions Our study using the blood based mSEPT9 test showed that CRC signal in blood can be detected in asymptomatic average risk individuals undergoing screening. However, the utility of the test for population screening for CRC will require improved sensitivity for detection of early cancers and advanced adenomas.     Description: Silicon nanowires (NWs) could enable low-cost and efficient photovoltaics, though their performance has been limited by nonideal electrical characteristics and an inability to tune absorption properties. We overcome these limitations through controlled synthesis of a series of polymorphic core/multishell NWs with highly crystalline, hexagonally-faceted shells, and well-defined coaxial (p/n) and p/intrinsic/n (p/i/n) diode junctions. Designed 200–300 nm diameter p/i/n NW diodes exhibit ultralow leakage currents of approximately 1 fA, and open-circuit voltages and fill-factors up to 0.5 V and 73%, respectively, under one-sun illumination. Single-NW wavelength-dependent photocurrent measurements reveal size-tunable optical resonances, external quantum efficiencies greater than unity, and current densities double those for silicon films of comparable thickness. In addition, finite-difference-time-domain simulations for the measured NW structures agree quantitatively with the photocurrent measurements, and demonstrate that the optical resonances are due to Fabry-Perot and whispering-gallery cavity modes supported in the high-quality faceted nanostructures. Synthetically optimized NW devices achieve current densities of 17 mA/cm2 and power-conversion efficiencies of 6%. Horizontal integration of multiple NWs demonstrates linear scaling of the absolute photocurrent with number of NWs, as well as retention of the high open-circuit voltages and short-circuit current densities measured for single NW devices. Notably, assembly of 2 NW elements into vertical stacks yields short-circuit current densities of 25 mA/cm2 with a backside reflector, and simulations further show that such stacking represents an attractive approach for further enhancing performance with projected efficiencies of 〉 15% for 1.2 μm thick 5 NW stacks.
